Cardinals' Kyler Murray: Lands five-year extension

Murray signed a five-year contract extension with the Cardinals on Thursday.

Per Adam Schefter of ESPN, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft -- who was set to enter the final year of his rookie contract -- is getting a five-year, $230.5 million deal that includes $160 million guaranteed. With that, the 24-year-old quarterback is under contract with Arizona through the 2028 season.

  • 49ers' Jimmy Garoppolo: Granted permission to seek trade

The 49ers have given Garoppolo's agents permission to seek a trade now that the veteran quarterback has been cleared to start practicing, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

Garoppolo may need more time to build up his arm strength after offseason surgery on his right shoulder, but he's at least been deemed healthy enough to practice. With the 49ers ready to turn to Trey Lance under center, a trade makes the most sense for all parties, though Garoppolo's considerable salary is another complicating factor on top of the shoulder surgery. Matt Barrows of The Athletic recently mentioned Seattle, Cleveland and Houston as possible destinations for the 30-year-old quarterback.

  • 49ers' Jimmy Garoppolo: Hopes to be cleared mid-August

Garoppolo (shoulder) is expected to be cleared to practice by mid-August, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

Perhaps more important than being cleared to return to practice, Garoppolo would also be expected to pass a physical, which should re-open the trade market for his services. It has been previously reported by Matt Barrows of The Athletic that the Browns, Seahawks and Texans remain candidates to acquire the 30-year-old quarterback.

  • 49ers' Jimmy Garoppolo: Starts throwing again

Garoppolo, who is on the mend from the shoulder surgery that he underwent in March, has reportedly resumed throwing, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.

While the fact that he's throwing again is a step in the right direction for Garoppolo as training camp approaches, it's unclear if he'll be able to fully practice by the end of the month. As the 30-year-old progresses in his recovery from surgery, look for the focus to soon shift on where he'll be playing in 2022. Though Garoppolo is still on the 49ers roster, he remains a candidate to be traded, with Trey Lance seemingly poised to handle starting duties this coming season. Per Barrows, the Browns, Seahawks and Texans are among the teams that could look into acquiring Garoppolo.

  • Panthers' Baker Mayfield: No extension, ready for competition

Panthers GM Scott Fitterer confirmed Mayfield will be part of an open QB competition this summer, also noting that the team hasn't discussed a contract extension and is taking a "short-term" view on Mayfield, Joe Person of The Athletic reports.

Fitterer expects the QB snaps to be split "fairly even" between Mayfield and Sam Darnold early in training camp, while rookie third-round pick Matt Corral will enter camp as the third-stringer. The Panthers recently acquired Mayfield in a trade with the Browns, giving up a fifth-round pick (that can turn into a fourth-rounder based on playing time) and taking on only part of the QB's salary. It sounds like Mayfield will be healthy for the start of camp after having surgery on his left, non-throwing shoulder in January.

  • Matt Corral QB | MIN

Panthers' Matt Corral: Falls to third on depth chart

Corral will enter training camp as the Panthers' No. 3 quarterback after Carolina acquired Baker Mayfield from the Browns on Wednesday, Ellis L. Williams of The Charlotte Observer reports.

Carolina traded up into the third round to select Corral this spring, just one offseason after trading for incumbent starter Sam Darnold. Now with Mayfield in the fold, he and Darnold will compete for the team's first-string job, a development that seemingly reduces Corral's chances of playing early on during his rookie campaign. However, with both Mayfield and Darnold on expiring contracts, Corral still looks to be an important piece of the Panthers' future, as his development during the upcoming season could affect the organization's decisions at the position moving forward.

  • Panthers' Baker Mayfield: Will compete with Darnold

Mayfield, whom the Panthers acquired from the Browns earlier Wednesday, will compete with Sam Darnold for Carolina's starting quarterback job during training camp and the preseason, David Newton of ESPN.com reports.

The Panthers went 5-12 last season while Darnold appeared in 12 of those contests, and now Mayfield, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, will look to supplant Carolina's incumbent starter as the summer rolls along. Per Newton, the Panthers landed Mayfield for a 2024 conditional fifth-round pick -- which can become a fourth-round selection -- while the Browns are slated to pay $10.5 million of the signal-caller's 2022 salary. Meanwhile, the Panthers will cover $4.85 million of the salary. In his fourth and final season with Cleveland, Mayfield was hampered by a torn labrum in his left (non-throwing) shoulder, an issue he's indicated he's since moved past. Assuming that's the case, the 27-year-old figures to share Carolina's first-team quarterback reps with Darnold -- with rookie Matt Corral working behind them -- once camp opens later this month.

  • Browns' Jacoby Brissett: Next man up behind Watson

Brissett and Joshua Dobbs are left as the Browns' remaining depth options behind Deshaun Watson on the quarterback depth chart after Baker Mayfield was traded to the Panthers on Wednesday, Jake Trotter of ESPN.com reports.

Though it had been presumed that Brissett would be next in line to start for Cleveland if Watson is suspended by the NFL, the possibility existed that Mayfield and the Browns could settle their differences following his request to be traded earlier in the offseason. Watson's hearing before the NFL and NFL Players Association's jointly appointed disciplinary officer, Sue L. Robinson, concluded this past Thursday, and while there's not a timetable for a determination on a possible suspension, a ruling on Watson's status ahead of the coming season could occur before training camp. Brissett, who signed a one-year deal with Cleveland in March, has started 37 games and made 60 appearances in total between stops with New England, Indianapolis and Miami through his first six NFL seasons.

  • Sam Darnold QB | SEA

Panthers' Sam Darnold: Set to compete with Mayfield

Darnold is now in line to compete with Baker Mayfield -- who was acquired by Carolina on Wednesday -- for the team's starting quarterback job, Darin Gantt of the Panthers' official site reports.

The competition will feature the top two quarterbacks selected in the 2018 NFL Draft, as Darnold was chosen by the Jets with the No. 3 overall pick, while the Browns grabbed Mayfield with the top overall pick. While nothing will be handed to Mayfield, it stands to reason that the Panthers wouldn't have acquired him had Darnold been viewed as the team's clear-cut answer under center. The 25-year-old Darnold is coming off an uneven 2021 campaign -- his first with Carolina -- in which he logged 2,527 passing yards to go with a 9:13 TD:INT in 12 games. For his part, Mayfield has reportedly recovered from an injury to his non-throwing shoulder, an injury that hampered him during his final season in Cleveland.

  • Eagles' Gardner Minshew: Likely staying in Philly

The Eagles might consider trading Minshew for an early draft pick, but the team is otherwise expected to keep him around as a backup in the final season of his rookie contract, Dave Zangaro of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports.

Minshew was excellent in his one start for Philadelphia in 2021, but Jalen Hurts then returned from an ankle injury and played well down the stretch to help the Eagles lock up a playoff spot. The Eagles then went out and traded for wideout A.J. Brown to give their offense a big boost, increasing the odds of Hurts finding success in his second year as a starter. The addition of Brown also means that Minshew will be in better position to succeed if he sees the field, but he won't have an opportunity to compete for the starting job this summer.
