  • Trevor Siemian QB | ATL

Jets' Trevor Siemian: Heads to IR

The Jets placed Siemian (ankle) on injured reserve Wednesday, Brian Costello of the New York Post reports.

Siemian was ruled out for the season Tuesday after an MRI revealed that he sustained ligament damage to his ankle that would make surgery a necessity. By moving Siemian to IR, the Jets will free up a spot on the roster for David Fales, who will back up new starting quarterback Luke Falk in Sunday's game against the Patriots.

  • Sam Darnold QB | SEA

Jets' Sam Darnold: Could play Week 5

Coach Adam Gase said Darnold (illness) could return as soon as Week 5 against the Eagles, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.

Gase's comments align with what the quarterback said about his own situation Tuesday, per Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News. Recovery timelines from mononucleosis can be volatile, but at the very least, Darnold seems to feel better than he did last week. With the Jets on bye in Week 4, there's some hope the quarterback will end up missing just two games. Luke Falk will get the start Sunday in New England, with the Jets signing David Fales on Wednesday to take on the backup role.

  • Browns' Baker Mayfield: Not making throws quickly

Mayfield is averaging 3.07 seconds before throwing on dropbacks this season, the third-highest rate in the league, per NFL Next Gen Stats.

He was atop that list in the Week 2 win over the Jets, when he averaged 3.35 seconds. Mayfield's results this season would suggest he needs to do a better job of getting rid of the ball quicker. Per Jake Trotter of ESPN.com, when Mayfield throws within 2.5 seconds, he's completed 74 percent of his throws with two touchdowns and one interception. Conversely, he's completed only 55 percent of his throws while posting an 0:3 TD:INT when he throws after 2.5 seconds. Having the ball in Mayfield's hands can be a good thing, but the added time he's taking has also resulted in eight sacks through two games, third in the NFL.

  • Marcus Mariota QB | WAS

Titans' Marcus Mariota: Slated for full practice

Coach Mike Vrabel said prior to Tuesday's practice that Mariota (quadriceps) would be a full participant, Erik Bacharach of The Tennessean reports.

When the Titans released their estimated practice report Monday, Mariota was listed as a non-participant on account of the quad issue, creating some uncertainty about his status heading into the Thursday night matchup with the Jaguars. Assuming Vrabel's comments hold true, Mariota will likely avoid an injury designation entirely in Week 3. Mariota has yet to commit a turnover through his first two starts while completing 63.5 percent of his passes for 7.7 yards per attempt and four touchdowns.

  • Sam Darnold QB | SEA

    Jets' Sam Darnold: Making progress

Coach Adam Gase said Tuesday that Darnold (illness) is "feeling better" and was welcomed back to the Jets' facility, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.

The fact that Darnold is no longer being quarantined suggests he's trending in the right direction in his recovery from mononucleosis. The Jets are optimistic that doctors will soon clear Darnold to resume physical activity, but he remains out indefinitely and won't be available to play in the team's upcoming game Sunday against the Patriots. After Trevor Siemian (ankle) suffered a season-ending ankle injury in the Week 2 loss, the Jets will turn to their third starting quarterback in as many games Sunday, with 2018 sixth-round pick Luke Falk receiving the nod. Gase noted that Falk will start as long as Darnold is sidelined.

  • Luke Falk QB | NYJ

Jets' Luke Falk: Officially named Week 3 starter

Coach Adam Gase announced Tuesday that Falk would serve as the Jets' starting quarterback Week 3 against the Patriots, Al Iannazzone of Newsday reports. "Luke will be the starter until Sam [Darnold] gets back," Gase said.

The Jets will be breaking in their third starting quarterback in as many games after Trevor Siemian exited early in Monday's 23-3 loss to the Browns with a left ankle injury that will require season-ending surgery. With Darnold also sidelined through at least the Jets' Week 4 bye while recovering from mononucleosis, Falk is the lone healthy quarterback on the roster, so it comes as little surprise that he'll step in as the team's new starter. A 2018 sixth-round pick who was signed off the practice squad prior to Monday's contest, Falk acquitted himself well in his NFL debut. While coming on in relief of Siemian, Falk committed no turnovers and completed 20 of 25 attempts for 198 yards.

  • Drew Lock QB | SEA

Broncos' Drew Lock: To resume throwing soon

Lock (thumb) is expected to begin throwing again next week, Ryan Koenigsberg of the Broncos' official site reports.

Lock will be eligible to practice in Week 6 and -- if the team elects to have him back -- could return to the active roster in Week 8. If the rookie second-round pick returns to the roster, he would very likely steal the backup job from Brandon Allen and could even see some snaps as the starter depending on how the team and Joe Flacco are playing at that point.

  • Paxton Lynch QB | PIT

Paxton Lynch: Lands on Steelers' practice squad

Lynch signed with Pittsburgh's practice squad Tuesday, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports.

Lynch was available after the Seahawks let him go Aug. 30. The former first-round pick will be able to provide the Steelers' quarterback room with some depth after it was announced Monday that Ben Roethlisberger would miss the remainder of the season with an elbow injury.

  • Buccaneers' Blaine Gabbert: Still not practicing

Gabbert (shoulder) didn't participate in Tuesday's practice, Eduardo A. Encina of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Gabbert hasn't practiced since dislocating his shoulder Aug. 23. He still has time to get on the field at least in a limited capacity by Friday, but he's trending toward being out for Week 3's game versus the Giants. Ryan Griffin will continue being Jameis Winston's backup for the extent of Gabbert's injury.

  • Trevor Siemian QB | ATL

Jets' Trevor Siemian: Out for season

Siemian will miss the remainder of the 2019 season after injuring his left ankle in Monday's 23-3 loss to the Browns, Connor Hughes of The Athletic reports.

According to Rich Cimini of ESPN.com, Siemian has a ligament issue with his ankle and will need surgery. The 27-year-old drew the Week 2 start in place of Sam Darnold (illness), playing just one and a half quarters before suffering the season-ending injury. The Jets' only healthy quarterback is currently Luke Falk -- who will start under center until Darnold returns -- so it wouldn't surprise if the team held quarterback tryouts and brought in more passers for insurance.
