  • Russell Wilson QB | NYG

Steelers' Russell Wilson: Will start Week 1

The Steelers named Wilson their starting quarterback for the Sept. 8 season opener at Atlanta, Jay Glazer of Fox Sports reports.

Wilson has long been considered the favorite over Justin Fields, who saw considerable first-team snaps this summer while the 35-year-old dealt with a calf injury. Wilson has been practicing without limitations for three weeks now and even made a couple appearances in the preseason, confirming that his health won't be an issue heading into Week 1. He'll be in danger of losing the starting job to Fields if he doesn't play well, but a run-first offense under new coordinator Arthur Smith could hide some of Wilson's shortcomings at this later stage of his career.

  • Drake Maye QB | NE

Patriots' Drake Maye: Starter to be announced Thursday

Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo said Wednesday that the team has made a decision between Maye and Jacoby Brissett (shoulder) as their Week 1 starting quarterback, but a formal announcement won't be made until Thursday, Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald reports.

Prior to New England trimming its roster down to 53 men, Mayo said Monday that Maye had outperformed Brissett in recent weeks, but the coach also acknowledged his hesitancy to start the rookie quarterback immediately. Brissett's shoulder injury doesn't appear likely to affect his performance Week 1, so that shouldn't be a factor in Mayo's decision on a starter. If there are any concerns that New England's offense still has some wrinkles to iron out before putting Maye in the best position to succeed, however, that could be enough reason for the team to lean on Brissett to kick off the regular season.

  • Browns' Dorian Thompson-Robinson: May be top backup

Thompson-Robinson could head into Week 1 as the top backup to starting quarterback Deshaun Watson, as the Browns are reportedly entertaining trade offers for reserve signal-callers Jameis Winston and Tyler Huntley, according to Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

The Browns kept four quarterbacks on their initial 53-man roster, so it would seem they are in the market to deal at least one of them. Winston was viewed as the top backup quarterback during training camp and the preseason, while the competition for the third spot was between Thompson-Robinson and Huntley.

  • Tyler Huntley QB | BAL

Browns' Tyler Huntley: Could be traded

The Browns will field trade offers for Huntley after the team kept four quarterbacks on their initial 53-man roster, Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.

In addition to Huntley, the Browns are reportedly also entertaining offers on Jameis Winston. The implication is that the Browns view Dorian Thompson-Robinson as the team's top backup to Deshaun Watson.

  • Jameis Winston QB | NYG

Browns' Jameis Winston: Candidate for trade

The Browns will field trade calls for Winston after the team kept four quarterbacks on the initial 53-man roster Tuesday, Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.

Along with Winston, the Browns plan to listen to offers on Tyler Huntley, which suggests Dorian Thompson-Robinson may be viewed as the top backup to Deshaun Watson. Something will happen between now and the regular season, as keeping four quarterbacks would be an unnecessary luxury.

  • John Wolford QB | MIN

John Wolford: Released by Tampa Bay

Wolford was released by the Buccaneers on Tuesday, Scott Smith of the team's official site reports.

The quarterback suffered a rib injury during the preseason and was unable to beat out Kyle Trask for the backup role behind Baker Mayfield. Wolford last saw regular-season action in 2022 with the Rams.

  • Andrew Peasley QB | NYJ

Andrew Peasley: Doesn't make 53-man roster

Peasley was waived by the Jets on Tuesday, Ethan Greenberg of the team's official site reports.

New York has veterans Aaron Rodgers and Tyrod Taylor as its top two options at quarterback, and Peasley competed with Adrian Martinez for the No. 3 QB role during the preseason. Neither made the 53-man roster, but at least one of the two signal-callers is likely to end up on the practice squad. Peasley completed 20 of 33 pass attempts for 181 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions during three preseason games while adding 24 yards on seven rushes.

  • Adrian Martinez: Jettisoned by Jets

Martinez was waived by the Jets on Tuesday, Ethan Greenberg of the team's official site reports.

Martinez was signed by New York in July and played in all three of the team's preseason contests, completing 25 of 47 passes for 270 yards, no touchdowns and one interception while carrying six times for 51 yards. He never had much of a chance to play a major role to open the campaign with Aaron Rodgers and Tyrod Taylor serving as New York's top two options at quarterback, but Martinez could land a spot on the team's practice squad if he clears waivers.

  • Devin Leary QB | BAL

    Devin Leary: Waived by Baltimore

Leary was waived by the Ravens on Tuesday, Clifton Brown of the team's official site reports.

The quarterback failed to catch on behind Lamar Jackson and Josh Johnson despite being selected in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft. Leary played his college ball at NC State and Kentucky, and tossed 35 touchdowns as a junior.

  • Trace McSorley QB | WAS

    Trace McSorley: Released Tuesday

McSorley was released by the Commanders on Tuesday, Zach Selby of the team's official site reports.

The quarterback got a chance to suit up for Washington during the preseason after signing Aug. 15, but he ultimately remained behind Jayden Daniels, Marcus Mariota and Jeff Driskel on the depth chart. McSorley has not seen regular-season action since 2022.
