Buccaneers' Kyle Trask: Trying to play to strengths

Trask, who's battling Baker Mayfield for the starting quarterback job this summer, is aiming to play in a manner that allows him to maximize his 6-foot-5 frame and leaner physique, Scott Smith of the team's official site reports.

The 2021 second-round pick is also focused on remaining calmer in the pocket, compared to his work over the last two preseasons where he feels he's been "a little agitated" and not as smooth in his mechanics as he feels he currently is. Trask describes his past style of play as "a little squatty" in terms of how tall he stood in the pocket, and he's also proving to possess greater mobility than he did during his college days thanks to having shed approximately 10 pounds since being drafted. Trask has performed well over the first two days of training camp, with Jenna Laine of ESPN.com reporting general manager Jason Licht has complimented the young signal-caller's improved footwork, arm strength and quick decisions.

Bengals' Joe Burrow: Dealing with calf strain

Bengals sources have reportedly confirmed that Burrow suffered a strained right calf during Thursday's practice, Dianna Russini of ESPN reports.

Per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Burrow is slated to undergo further testing, after which there should be a degree of added clarity with regard to the severity of QB's injury. For any length of time that Burrow is sidelined, Trevor Siemian and Jake Browning will handle the Bengals' signal-caller duties.

Bengals' Joe Burrow: Slated to undergo further testing

Burrow, who suffered what is believed to be a calf strain during Thursday's practice, is slated to undergo further testing to assess his injury, Grant Gordon of NFL.com reports via NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Though the Bengals have yet to elaborate on the nature of the QB's right calf issue, coach Zac Taylor did relay after Thursday's session that the team would have a better understanding of the severity of Burrow's injury soon. At this point, there's no timetable for the signal-caller's return to the field, but we'd expect the 26-year-old to miss some time in any case. If that transpires, Trevor Siemian and Jake Browning would be in line to handle practice reps in Burrow's absence.

Bengals' Joe Burrow: Suffers calf injury Thursday

Coach Zac Taylor confirmed that Burrow sustained a calf injury during Thursday's practice, Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic reports.

The severity of the issue has yet to be determined, but it's worth noting that prior to going down on the field and then being carted away Thursday, Burrow had been sporting a sleeve on his calf. For now, consider the Bengals' star QB day-to-day.

Bengals' Joe Burrow: Carted off field Thursday

Burrow was carted off the field Thursday after appearing to sustain a leg injury, Kelsey Conway of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Conway notes that the QB grabbed his calf after going down on the field Thursday. At this point, it's too early to get a read on the severity of Burrow's issue, but this is clearly a situation to monitor closely. Next up for the Bengals' signal-caller reps should Burrow miss any time are Trevor Siemian and Jake Browning.

  • Andy Dalton QB | PHI

Panthers' Andy Dalton: Passed over for starting gig

Dalton is expected to open the season as Carolina's No. 2 quarterback after head coach Frank Reich announced Wednesday that he views Bryce Young as the team's starter, David Newton of ESPN.com reports. "Yes, he's QB1," Reich said of Young.

Even though Young was selected with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft in April, Dalton still opened summer workouts atop the depth chart, but it didn't take long for the rookie to pass him up. Young ended up working with the first-team offense during minicamp in June, and the Panthers evidently saw enough from the Alabama product in those sessions to convince the coaching staff that he wouldn't need to battle Dalton for the starting gig in camp. Dalton likely signed a two-year deal with Carolina in March with the understanding that he wouldn't be much more than an insurance policy at quarterback in 2023, coming off a solid if unspectacular season with the Saints in which he posted an 18:9 TD:INT and 7.6 YPA. He'll still profile as one of the more accomplished backup signal-callers in the league and should be able to keep the Carolina offense afloat in the event Young misses time at any point this season.

  • Aaron Rodgers QB | PIT

    Jets' Aaron Rodgers: Reworks contract

Rodgers agreed to a reworked deal with the Jets on Wednesday, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.

Cimini notes that the quarterback is essentially taking a significant pay cut to help out the Jets. Specifically, $33.715 million is set to be trimmed from the $108.715 million he was still owed on his prior deal with Green Bay. Per Cimini, Rodgers' new contract is a two-year, fully guaranteed $75 million pact. Given the terms of the agreement, the chances that Rodgers sticks around in New York for more than one year appear to have increased.

  • Colts' Anthony Richardson: Works behind Minshew

Richardson worked behind Gardner Minshew on Wednesday in the Colts' first practice of training camp, Kevin Bowen of 107.5 The Fan Indianapolis reports.

Minshew handled all 15 starting reps during the 11-on-11 portion of practice, while Richardson completed both of his passing attempts in his limited work during the session. Meanwhile, head coach Shane Steichen told Jake Arthur of SI.com that the team plans to implement a rotation of first-team reps between Minshew and Richardson as training camp progresses. Given that the Colts took Richardson fourth overall in the 2023 NFL Draft, he'll eventually claim the starting quarterback job, but the talented rookie will have to compete with Minshew this summer for the team's Week 1 assignment.

  • Colts' Gardner Minshew: Opens camp in starting role

Minshew received all of the first-team reps during Wednesday's practice, but head coach Shane Steichen said that Minshew and Anthony Richardson will rotate on the first team as training camp unfolds, Jake Arthur of SI.com reports.

Minshew completed all four of his passes Wednesday on the first day of camp. Richardson was drafted with the fourth overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft despite being considered a raw prospect, and Minshew's experience has him slightly ahead in the team's quarterback competition at this point. Even so, Indianapolis will likely give the more mobile Richardson plenty of opportunities to seize the starting job before the season begins.

  • Bryce Young QB | CAR

Panthers' Bryce Young: Named No. 1 QB

Head coach Frank Reich named Young the Panthers' No. 1 quarterback on Wednesday, Joe Person of The Athletic reports.

Young, the top overall pick of April's draft, has worked with the first-team offense since the beginning of OTAs, and Reich has now confirmed that Carolina plans for him to start Week 1 against the Falcons over veteran backup Andy Dalton. The news doesn't come as much of a surprise, given that Young clearly represents the Panthers' future at under center and projects as a relatively NFL-ready rookie. Announcing Young as the starter early in camp and giving him plenty of first-team reps throughout the next month will give the Alabama product plenty of time to learn the playbook and build chemistry with wideouts Adam Thielen, DJ Chark, Terrace Marshall and Jonathan Mingo and tight end Hayden Hurst.
