  • Geoff Swaim TE | CLE

Jaguars' Geoff Swaim: Not expected to play Thursday

Swaim isn't expected to play in Thursday's preseason matchup with Philadelphia due to an undisclosed injury, John Oehser of the Jaguars' official site reports.

It's unclear how serious Swaim's injury is, although head coach Doug Marrone could just be exercising caution with the 25-year-old. When healthy, Swaim figures is the Jaguars' projected starter at tight end.

  • Irv Smith TE | HOU

Vikings' Irv Smith Jr.: Blocking well

Vikings assistant Gary Kubiak said Smith has impressed the coaching staff with his blocking, Tom Pelissero of NFL.com reports.

Best known for his speed and pass-catching potential, the rookie second-round pick could perhaps use unexpected prowess as a blocker to convince the Vikings to deploy more formations with multiple tight ends. The team's lack of wideout talent behind Adam Thielen and Stefon Diggs adds to the appeal of that plan, but Smith didn't make the best case for himself with three catches for just 21 yards on seven targets in the preseason opener. He could be in for another busy night Sunday against the Seahawks, with No. 1 tight end Kyle Rudolph likely to be limited to one or two drives.

  • Tanner Hudson TE | CIN

Buccaneers' Tanner Hudson: Experiencing summer surge

Hudson, who brought in seven of nine targets for 84 yards and a touchdown in the Buccaneers' 30-28 preseason loss to the Steelers last Friday, has continued to stand out in joint practices with the Dolphins the last two days, Carmen Vitali of the team's official site reports.

The second-year tight end made a solid impression on the practice squad last season and was promoted in December when the Buccaneers were thin at the position following O.J. Howard's season-ending ankle injury. Hudson is an athletic specimen with good size (6-foot-5, 240 pounds), and his ability to get down the seam was on full display during a fourth-quarter comeback attempt in last Friday's preseason opener. Hudson followed that up in Tuesday's joint practice against the Dolphins by consistently getting the best of Miami's second-team defense and will look to continue impressing versus Miami in Friday night's exhibition.

  • Giants' Isaiah Searight: Sent to IR

Searight (hamstring) was reverted to the Giants' injured reserve Wednesday, per the NFL's official transaction page.

Seawright has been dealing with a hamstring injury, and the severity is unclear. The Fordham product will remain on IR with the Giants barring an injury settlement with the team.

  • 49ers' George Kittle: Day-to-day with calf tightness

Kittle is viewed as day-to-day with calf tightness, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.

Kittle wasn't able to practice Tuesday, and his absence will extend at least another day. So far, there's been nothing to suggest that his calf issue is anything major, but it could impact his chances of suiting up for Monday's preseason game against the Broncos.

  • Darren Waller TE | MIA

    Raiders' Darren Waller: Making progress

Waller was as "active [in Tuesday's practice] as he has been since suffering his shoulder sprain" earlier this month, Scott Bair of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

The status of top wideout Antonio Brown has been capturing headlines out of Oakland's training camp of late, but Waller is nonetheless a player to monitor. The 26-year-old logged just six catches for 75 yards in four games for the Raiders last season, but with Jared Cook no longer in the mix, there's a clear opportunity for the athletic Waller -- who tops the team's depth chart at tight end -- to see an uptick in targets in 2019. It's a scenario that has landed the 6-foot-6 Waller firmly in the fantasy sleeper discussion.

  • Ian Thomas TE | LV

Panthers' Ian Thomas: Missing another day

Thomas (ribs) isn't practicing Wednesday, Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic reports.

Thomas suffered the injury in Carolina's preseason opener last week and now appears likely to sit out Friday's exhibition against the Bills. With 34-year-old starting tight end Greg Olsen an obvious candidate to be rested, Bill Voth of the Panthers' official site speculates that third-string option Chris Manhertz could be busy in Carolina's second preseason game.

  • Isaiah Searight: Let go by Giants

Searight (hamstring) was waived/injured by the Giants on Tuesday, Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com reports.

The severity of Searight's hamstring injury is unknown at this time, but if he goes unclaimed on waivers he will revert to the Giants' IR. He would remain there for the remainder of the season unless both parties can come to terms on an injury settlement.

  • Nick Truesdell TE | MIN

Nick Truesdell: Let go by Jets

Truesdell was waived by the Jets on Tuesday.

Truesdell has now been let go by the Jets twice in the last week and a half. This time, just two days after re-signing with the team, Truesdell was waived in order to create a roster spot for the signing of defensive back Marcus Cooper.

  • Troy Fumagalli TE | MIN

Broncos' Troy Fumagalli: Taking snaps at fullback

Fumagalli played some fullback during Tuesday's practice, Zac Stevens of BSNDenver.com reports.

Coach Vic Fangio is taking a serious look at Fumagalli being the solution to the injured Andy Janovich, who suffered a strained pectoral muscle and will be out for the next six to eight weeks. With tight end snaps going to be hard to come by for Fumagalli this season, a spot at fullback may be his best opportunity to see the field.
