Malkin (upper body) was designated for injured reserve Tuesday. Malkin's injury was originally downplayed by head coach Dan Muse, who had initially said he believed Malkin might be available for Sunday's clash with Dallas. Now, the 39-year-old center is suddenly on injured reserve, which will cause him to miss at least Pittsburgh's next two outings. With Geno on the shelf, Kevin Hayes has been pressed into service as the Pens' second-line center.

Malkin (upper body) won't play against Dallas on Sunday. Malkin is day-to-day and will miss at least one game. He has accounted for eight goals, 29 points and 66 shots on net over 26 appearances this season. Malkin will be a challenging player to replace in the lineup. However, the Penguins will get Justin Brazeau (upper body) and Noel Acciari (upper body) back in Sunday's matchup against the Stars.

Malkin scored two goals, including the game-winner late in the third period, and had an assist in a 4-3 victory over the Lightning on Thursday. Malkin broke the 3-3 tie late in the third with a one-timer from the low slot off a feed from Thomas Novak. It was his seventh career go-ahead goal in the final five minutes of regulation, tying Mario Lemieux and Sidney Crosby for the most in franchise history. Malkin also tied Bryan Trottier for the 10th-most assists with a single franchise (853).

Malkin notched two power-play assists in Monday's 5-1 win over the Flyers. The Penguins scored three power-play goals in total on the night, with Malkin helping to set up tallies by Bryan Rust in the second period and Thomas Novak in the third. It was Malkin's first multi-point performance since Oct. 27, as he works to put a sluggish November (three goals and seven points in 12 games) behind him. On the season, the 39-year-old has six goals and 26 points in 25 contests.

Malkin scored a power-play goal in Saturday's 3-2 overtime loss to the Kraken. Malkin found the back of the net thanks to a wrister at 5:56 of the second period, and now he has six goals on the season. The veteran playmaker has been extremely productive of late and has cracked the scoresheet in all but two of his last 10 games, tallying three goals, five assists, four PIM, 26 shots and two hits over that stretch. However, he hasn't recorded a multi-point game since tallying two points in a 6-3 win over the Blues on Oct. 27.
