Clifford signed a one-year AHL contract with the Marlies on Wednesday, per Lance Hornby of The Toronto Sun. The Marlies are the AHL affiliates of the Maple Leafs, but Clifford won't be eligible to play in the NHL under the terms of his new contract. If the Maple Leafs want to use him during the 2024-25 campaign, then they'll have to first sign him to at least a two-way deal. Clifford had 10 goals, 28 points and 140 PIM in 53 regular-season contests with the Marlies in 2023-24. He's also a veteran of 753 career NHL games, recording 66 goals, 144 points and 905 PIM over that span.

Clifford was waived Sunday, Chris Johnston of TSN reports. Clifford scored eight goals and 20 points in 46 games with AHL Toronto last year while dressing in just two games for the Maple Leafs. The 32-year-old forward will likely spend most of the 2023-24 campaign in the minors.

Clifford (shoulder) was activated from injured reserve and assigned to AHL Toronto on Wednesday, per CapFriendly. Clifford was injured in just his second NHL game of the year. He has an assist, six hits and two shots on goal through two contests, but he'll now get a chance to get up to speed at the AHL level after his absence.

Clifford's previously undisclosed injury is a shoulder problem, per David Alter of Sports Illustrated. Clifford is still being assessed, but Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe doesn't think the injury is serious. Clifford was placed on the injured reserve list Tuesday, so he'll miss some time regardless.
