  • Maatta was traded from Detroit to Utah on Tuesday in exchange for a third-round pick in 2025, which originally belonged to the Rangers. This is a classic hockey trade -- the Red Wings were carrying eight blueliners on the active roster. This trade frees up $3 million in cap space for Detroit, while Utah replenishes its injury-ravaged defense corps with a steady veteran capable of taking on bottom-four minutes. Maatta hasn't recorded a point over seven games this season, but he's blocked seven shots while adding three shots on goal and three hits. It's unclear if Maatta will be available for Wednesday's game against the Flames, but he should be ready to join Utah for a four-game road trip that begins in Vegas on Saturday.

  • Maatta posted four goals, 14 assists, 96 blocked shots and a team-leading plus-14 rating through 72 games this season. Maatta didn't post the type of stat that would enthrall the masses in fantasy hockey but was efficient for a retooled Red Wings blue line that desperately needed more cohesion and consistency. The 2024-25 campaign will be a contract year for Maatta before potentially being able to hit the open market as an unrestricted free agent.

  • Maatta may not be able to play Sunday versus Buffalo because of an upper-body injury, per Ansar Khan of MLive.com. Maatta took part in Saturday's practice after sitting out Friday's 4-3 loss to the Rangers due to the injury. He has four goals, 17 points and 91 blocked shots in 66 outings this campaign. If Maatta is good to go, Jake Walman might be a healthy scratch versus the Sabres.

  • Red Wings' Olli Maatta: Rare two-goal game
    By RotoWire

Maatta scored twice Thursday in a 5-3 loss to the Islanders. It was Maatta's third career multi-goal game (March 1, 2018 against the Bruins and March 6, 2014 against the Sharks). His first goal came early in the second frame with a slap shot from the left circle. His second came at 10:49 of third to tie the game 3-3. Maatta fired the biscuit into an open net off a cross-ice pass. He's not a consistent fantasy contributor -- he has just four goals, 17 points, 35 shots and 37 hits in 52 games this season. Nice effort, but it's not likely to be repeated.
