Maatta didn't post the type of stat that would enthrall the masses in fantasy hockey but was efficient for a retooled Red Wings blue line that desperately needed more cohesion and consistency. The 2024-25 campaign will be a contract year for Maatta before potentially being able to hit the open market as an unrestricted free agent.

The 29-year-old Maatta has four goals, 17 points and 91 blocked shots in 66 outings this campaign. Jake Walman will be a healthy scratch Sunday due to Maatta's return.

Maatta scored twice Thursday in a 5-3 loss to the Islanders. It was Maatta's third career multi-goal game (March 1, 2018 against the Bruins and March 6, 2014 against the Sharks). His first goal came early in the second frame with a slap shot from the left circle. His second came at 10:49 of third to tie the game 3-3. Maatta fired the biscuit into an open net off a cross-ice pass. He's not a consistent fantasy contributor -- he has just four goals, 17 points, 35 shots and 37 hits in 52 games this season. Nice effort, but it's not likely to be repeated.

Maatta supplied two assists in Wednesday's 3-2 overtime win over the Panthers. Maatta pulled through for a Detroit team that still sits seven points behind the second-place Florida in the Atlantic Division. This was the second multi-point game for Maatta in 2023-24, and the blueliner will need to keep it up while Jake Walman tends to an illness that has already kept him off the ice for three consecutive contests.
