Gustafsson was summoned from AHL Grand Rapids on an emergency basis Thursday. The Red Wings may need a seventh defenseman Thursday in Edmonton, as Simon Edvinsson was injured Wednesday in Calgary. Gustafsson has only played one NHL game this season, going minus-1 with two shots on goal. He had one goal and 13 assists in 14 AHL games before his recall. The Red Wings placed Mason Appleton (lower body) on injured reserve in a corresponding move.

The defenseman has stayed confident in the AHL this year, earning 12 helpers and a plus-11 rating over 13 appearances. If he gets back to Detroit, he'll likely be a rotational depth option on the third pairing.

Gustafsson has over 500 games of NHL experience to his name, but he has spent the entirety of the 2025-26 season in the AHL so far. The 33-year-old has eight assists in 10 games with AHL Grand Rapids this year. In 2024-25, the veteran defenseman had two goals and 16 assists but a minus-19 rating in 60 games.
