Nutivaara (hip) announced his retirement Friday, according to NHL reporter Tommi Seppala. Nutivaara inked a one-year contract last offseason, but he only managed to play in one preseason game before he was sidelined for the entire 2022-23 regular season. The 29-year-old played in 275 NHL games in his career, tallying 17 goals and chipping in 54 assists over that span.

Nutivaara didn't play at all in 2022-23 because of a hip injury, Corey Masisak of The Athletic reports. Nutivaara was on injured reserve for nearly the entirety of what could be his only season with the Sharks. He is a pending unrestricted free agent, and his career could be in jeopardy. Nutivaara appeared in only one game with Florida during the 2021-22 season because of the hip issue.

Nutivaara (lower body) was shifted to long-term injured reserve Sunday, CapFriendly reports. This is simply a paper move for the Sharks as Nutivaara has yet to play this season. There's been little update on his status and he can be considered out indefinitely until more information is available.

Nutivaara (lower body) is not close to a return, Sheng Peng of San Jose Hockey Now reports. Nutivaara only managed to play in one game last season because of hip surgery, and it is believed that he is still dealing with complications from that procedure. The Sharks defender hasn't skated yet.

Nutivaara (lower body) was placed on injured reserve Monday. Nutivaara is considered day-to-day but he already missed the first two games of the season. He could return for San Jose's next game Friday against Carolina if he's ready but there hasn't been much of an update on his status.
