  • Byfield signed a five-year, $31.25 million extension with the Kings on Monday. Byfield was the second-overall pick in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft. After a slow start to his career, he finally broke out during the 2023-24 campaign; Byfield racked up 20 goals and 55 points with a plus-19 rating in 80 regular-season games last year. The 21-year-old center scored 14 of those points with the man advantage. Byfield also added four points, all assists, in five postseason contests. Expect him to take another step forward with his offensive production during the 2024-25 season.

Byfield provided an assist and added two PIM in Friday's 6-1 loss to the Oilers in Game 3. Byfield has four helpers and a plus-5 rating over three playoff contests. The 21-year-old is seeing steady top-six minutes, though this was the first time in three games he started on the top line. Byfield can offer offense with a little physicality, but it remains to be seen if reuniting him with Anze Kopitar and Adrian Kempe will be the adjustment the Kings need to keep pace in this first-round series.

  • Byfield produced two assists, three hits, two PIM and a plus-4 rating in Wednesday's 5-4 overtime win over the Oilers in Game 2. Byfield helped out on Kevin Fiala's goal in the third period and set up Anze Kopitar for the game-winner 2:07 into overtime. The 21-year-old Byfield has some momentum with five points over his last three outings, which follows a nine-game slump. He's been listed on the third line for the playoffs, but his role has been fairly interchangeable with Alex Laferriere so far. Byfield will have the better scoring outlook of the two even if he doesn't get back into a top-six role officially.

Byfield notched an assist, two shots on goal and four hits in Monday's 7-4 loss to the Oilers in Game 1. Byfield set up an Adrian Kempe tally in the second period. An unsteady end to the campaign saw Byfield pick up two points in the regular-season finale following a 19-game goal drought in which he earned six assists. The 21-year-old had 55 points over 80 regular-season contests overall, but it's possible he's feeling the wear and tear of a full-length NHL season, which could limit his effectiveness in the playoffs.

  • Byfield scored a goal on eight shots and added an assist in Thursday's 5-4 overtime win over the Blackhawks. Both points came on the power play. Byfield entered Thursday on a nine-game point drought. He was able to snap the drought with a second-period tally, and he also set up Viktor Arvidsson's equalizer in the third. Late slump aside, Byfield took a big step forward in 2023-24, finishing with 20 goals, 55 points (14 on the power play), 161 shots on net, 66 hits and a plus-19 rating over 80 appearances. Byfield spent most of the season on the top line, but he may be more sheltered in the postseason.
