Cayden Primeau G | CAR
Hurricanes' Cayden Primeau: Waived Wednesday
Primeau was put on waivers by Carolina on Wednesday, per Walt Ruff of the Hurricanes' official site.
The Hurricanes plan to reassign Primeau to AHL Chicago if he clears waivers. The 27-year-old netminder had a 2-1-0 record, 4.31 GAA and .838 save percentage in three regular-season appearances with the Maple Leafs in 2025-26. While those numbers are obviously rough, he did post an 8-9-4 record, 2.99 GAA and .910 save percentage in 23 regular-season appearances with Montreal in 2023-24, so at least in that one instance, he was able to hold his own at the top level. Nevertheless, Carolina's top-two goaltenders are clearly Pyotr Kochetkov and Brandon Bussi, and Primeau doesn't fit into the NHL picture when those two are available.

Dustin Wolf G | CGY
Flames' Dustin Wolf: Expected starter for Thursday
Wolf is set to start at home against Seattle on Thursday, per Pat Steinberg of QR Calgary 770 AM.
Wolf had a 23-29-3 record, 3.01 GAA and .899 save percentage in 57 regular-season appearances with the Flames in 2025-26. He's set to once again be Calgary's No. 1 netminder this campaign. Devin Cooley will serve as the backup and is likely to get his first start of the campaign either Saturday in Vancouver or Sunday in Seattle.

A.J. Greer LW | ANA
Ducks' A.J. Greer: Takes contact
Greer (upper body) took contact during Wednesday's practice, per Derek Lee of The Hockey News.
Greer might be an option for Friday's game in Vegas, but that hasn't been confirmed. If he does play, then he'll likely serve in a middle-six capacity. Frank Vatrano will probably serve as a healthy scratch if Greer ends up being available versus the Golden Knights.

Matt Duchene C | DAL
Stars' Matt Duchene: Isn't expected to play Friday
Duchene (lower body) is doubtful to play Friday versus St. Louis, per Lia Assimakopoulos of The Dallas Morning News.
Duchene also dealt with the same injury during training camp, and he recently suffered a setback in his recovery. The Stars are planning to dress 11 forwards and seven defensemen Friday due to the expectation that Duchene will miss the game. Kyle Capobianco, who might have otherwise been a healthy scratch, is now projected to play against the Blues.

Jake Oettinger G | DAL
Stars' Jake Oettinger: Healthy going into season
Oettinger (lower body) is available for Friday's season opener at home against St. Louis, per Owen Newkirk of DLLS Sports.
Oettinger hasn't been named the starter for the upcoming game versus the Blues, but the chances of him getting the assignment are high. He had a 35-12-6 record, 2.59 GAA and .899 save percentage in 54 regular-season appearances with Dallas in 2025-26. Oettinger is Dallas' clear No. 1 netminder, while Casey DeSmith is set to continue to serve as his understudy.

Connor Brown RW | NJ
Devils' Connor Brown: Dealing with injury
Brown (undisclosed) is expected to miss at least the first two games of the 2026-27 campaign, Kristy Flannery of The Hockey News reports Wednesday.
Brown sustained the injury during Monday's practice. Head coach Sheldon Keefe clarified that he doesn't believe Brown's injury is "too extensive," but the 32-year-old forward won't be ready until next week at the earliest. That rules him out for Thursday's season opener versus Philadelphia and Saturday's road game against the Islanders. Brown will likely play in a middle-six capacity once he's healthy.
-
Andre Burakovsky LW | OTT
Senators' Andre Burakovsky: Shelved Saturday
Burakovsky will miss Saturday's matchup with Toronto due to an upper-body injury, Julian McKenzie of The Athletic reports.
Burakovsky notched 11 goals and 22 assists, including 10 power-play points, in 75 regular-season games last year. If Warren Foegele (undisclosed) is available Saturday, the Senators won't need to call up a player from the minors to replace Burakovsky.
-
Dylan Larkin C | DET
Red Wings' Dylan Larkin: Labeled day-to-day
Larkin (upper body) is considered day-to-day ahead of Friday's season opener versus the Rangers, Michael Whitaker of The Hockey News reports.
Larkin has reached the 30-goal mark in each of the previous five seasons and should be capable of hitting that threshold again in 2026-27, assuming he isn't sidelined for too long. Once given the all-clear, Larkin should reclaim his spot on the first line.

MacKenzie Blackwood G | COL
Avalanche's Mackenzie Blackwood: Guarding home goal
Blackwood is set to start at home against Los Angeles on Wednesday, per Evan Rawal of the Denver Gazette.
Blackwood had a 23-10-2 record, 2.50 GAA and .904 save percentage in 38 regular-season appearances with the Avalanche in 2025-26. Although Blackwood's getting the Opening Night assignment, Scott Wedgewood can't be easily categorized as Colorado's No. 2 goaltender. It wouldn't be surprising if the two netminders evenly split the workload in 2026-27, provided they both stay relatively healthy.
