  • Boston seems to have soured on Carl Crawford, reported Joel Sherman in the New York Post
  • An AL executive said Boston "wants [Crawford] out in the worst way."
  • The Red Sox tried to swap Crawford for Marlins shortstop Reyes, but the teams were never close to making a deal.
  • Boston is thought to be the Yankees' main competition down the stretch, even though it is in last place in the AL East, with a 49-50 record, as of Friday morning.
  • The Red Sox remain interested in acquiring a starting pitcher, thanks in most part to the struggles of Jon Lester and Josh Beckett, and potentially a shortstop.
  • About the Tampa Bay Rays, Sherman wrote that because Jeff Niemann is due to return from injury next month, the club thinks it can trade a starter and still make a playoff push. The Rays have received calls about James Shields, Jeremy Hellickson and Wade Davis.
  • The Angels have been linked in to Shields, and Sherman wrote that they offered a deal centered around Peter Bourjos, to take over in center field for B.J. Upton. However, the Rays believe Desmond Jennings is their successor to Upton.
  • The Rangers are also interested in Shields, as per Sherman, and between the Angels and Rangers, two AL West rivals and contenders, whichever team fails to land the big fish in Zack Greinke will hopefully bid more for Shields.
  • Sticking with the Rangers, Texas scouted Indians outfielder Shin-Soo Choo Thursday night, wrote FOXSports.com's Jon Paul Morosi.
  • However, the Indians, in the thick of a playoff race of their own, are likely to hold on to Choo, tweeted CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman.
  • Choo, 30, has an impressive .876 OPS on the season, is a better defensive outfielder than Nelson Cruz, and could serve as insurance in case Josh Hamilton signs elsewhere in the offseason.
  • Texas, as has been reported over the past few days, is in the market for a starting pitcher, and has been linked to Greinke and Josh Johnson. The Rangers are under intense pressure to make a trade to try and ensure they reach the World Series for a third consecutive season, and, hopefully, win a title before their window to do so closes.
  • Although injuries have derailed the Rockies' season, they "are not planning to conduct a major sale," wrote Heyman. Teams interested in trading for Michael Cuddyer and Matt Belisle shouldn't get their hopes up.
  • Rockies likely to be traded are: Marco Scutaro, Jason Giambi, Rafael Betancourt, Matt Reynolds and Jonathan Herrera.
  • Scutaro has drawn interest from the Rays, Nationals, Giants, Rangers and A's.
  • Twenty-two-year old Angels shorstop Jean Segura, the organization's top prospect, is Los Angeles' "primary trade bait," tweeted ESPN's Buster Olney.
  • Segura posted a .749 OPS with Double-A Arkansas before being called up by the Angels as an injury replacement for Erick Aybar.
