The "to be" part of the compound baseball-ing noun "player to be named" suggests that player will, at some point in the indeterminate future, in fact be traded. "Some point in the indeterminate future," thy name is "Thursday."
Indeed, on Thursday three separate deals drew to a close as those PTBNs were named.
To complete the recent Joe Blanton swap, the Dodgers sent 21-year-old right-hander Ryan O'Sullivan to the Phillies. This season, O'Sullivan, a fourth-round pick in 2011, has a 3.05 ERA in 88.2 innings across the Low-A and High-A levels. He'll report to the Phils' High-A affiliate in Clearwater.
Elsewhere, the 10-player dogpile that sent J.A. Happ and Brandon Lyon to Toronto is now done. To finish it off, the Blue Jays have dispatched righty Kevin Comer to the Astros. Comer, age 20, was the 57th overall pick of the 2011 draft. In 43.1 innings this season in the rookie-level Appalachian League, Comer has a 3.95 ERA with 29 strikeouts and eight walks.
Finally, remember the Kelly Shoppach deal? The Mets have done their part by shipping reliever Pedro Beato off to Boston. Beato, age 25, pitched 67.0 innings for the Mets last season and logged a 4.30 ERA with 39 strikeouts against 24 unintentional walks. He's spent most of this season in Triple-A, where he's posted a 4.14 ERA in 37.0 innings.
