Nick Hundley: Transitions to front office role
Hundley accepted a job with MLB as a Senior Director of Baseball Operations, freelance baseball writer Robert Murray reports.
Hundley is ready to move on from his playing days after appearing in just 31 big-league games in 2019 and slashing .200/.233/.357. The 36-year-old backstop played with five teams across 12 seasons, finishing with a career .247/.299/.405 triple-slash and 93 home runs in 974 games.

Nick Hundley: Let go by Philly
Hundley was released by the Phillies on Friday, Tom Housenick of The Morning Call reports.

Phillies' Nick Hundley: Signs with Phillies
Hundley signed a minor-league contract with the Phillies on Monday, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports.
Hundley hit just .200 with a .590 OPS in 31 games with the Athletics earlier in the year before being designated for assignment and subsequently released. The veteran backstop will report to Triple-A Lehigh Valley, though he could get a look as the team's backup catcher down the stretch with Andrew Knapp currently hitting just .190 through 57 games.

Nick Hundley: Parts ways with Oakland
The Athletics released Hundley on Sunday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Rather than asking him to report to their Triple-A affiliate in Las Vegas, the Athletics elected to allow Hundley to pursue opportunities outside the organization after he recently went unclaimed off waivers. Hundley only managed a .200/.233/.357 batting line in 31 games with Oakland prior to being cut, but his 10-plus years of MLB experience should help the 35-year-old find work with another organization in need of catching depth.

Athletics' Nick Hundley: Activated, DFA'd
The Athletics activated Hundley (knee) from the 10-day injured list Wednesday and subsequently designated him for assignment.
Though Hundley is healthy again after missing over a month of action following arthroscopic knee surgery, the Athletics no longer had room for him with Josh Phegley and Chris Herrmann locked in as the team's top two catchers. The Athletics will shop Hundley around for a potential trade, but he'll be exposed to the waiver wire in the event Oakland can't find a suitor. Given that Hundley has accrued more than five years of MLB service time, he'll be able to refuse a minor-league assignment and explore his options elsewhere even if no other organization trades for him or claims him off waivers.

Athletics' Nick Hundley: Catches no-hitter in minors
Hundley (knee) went 2-for-5 with an RBI double and two runs while playing all nine innings at catcher during High-A Stockton's combined no-hitter against Rancho Cucamonga on Monday.
It was the third straight day Hundley played all nine innings, with the veteran catcher sandwiching a pair of full stints behind the dish around full-time designated hitter duties Sunday. If Monday ultimately turns out to be the 35-year-old's final appearance with the Ports, it was a memorable one -- Hundley captained the combined no-no put together by Bryce Conley, Eric Martinez and Jake Bray.

Athletics' Nick Hundley: Plays full game at catcher
Hundley (knee) played all nine innings at catcher for High-A Stockton on Saturday, going 0-for-4 in a loss to Rancho Cucamonga.
The veteran backstop had gotten the day off Friday after serving as the designated hitter Thursday, and Saturday marked the first time during his five-game rehab assignment that he's played a full game behind the dish. It remains to be seen if Hundley will be asked to repeat the feat Sunday, or if the Athletics saw enough with Saturday's game to make a decision on his status.

Athletics' Nick Hundley: Fills DH role in latest rehab game
Hundley (knee) started at designated hitter for High-A Stockton against Lancaster on Thursday and went 1-for-3 with two walks and a run while playing all nine innings.
It was Hundley's second rehab game with the Ports, and Thursday's DH duty followed seven innings of playing behind the dish Wednesday. So far, so good for the veteran catcher in what is thus far a four-game rehab stint, and he'll likely up his participation to a full game at catcher in the coming days.

Athletics' Nick Hundley: Hitless in first High-A rehab game
Hundley (knee) went 0-for-4 while playing seven innings at catcher for High-A Stockton in a win over Lancaster on Wednesday.
The veteran backstop was playing his first rehab game with the Ports, but his third overall after logging a pair of appearances with the Athletics' Arizona League team. Hundley is presumably working up to eventually catching a full nine innings before activation is considered.

Athletics' Nick Hundley: Moving rehab to High-A
Hundley (knee) will start a rehab assignment with High-A Stockton on Wednesday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Hundley will play seven innings for the Ports in his third rehab game since landing on the injured list in early June. The 35-year-old will likely need to advance to catching a full nine innings before rejoining the Athletics since he is coming off arthroscopic knee surgery.

Athletics' Nick Hundley: Nearing rehab assignment
Hundley (knee) caught a bullpen session Thursday and believes he's about 10 days away from a rehab assignment, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Hundley landed on the injured list with back spasms in early June and underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee June 18. The 35-year-old's initial recovery timeline put his return in early August, and he appears to be on track or slightly ahead of schedule in his progression.

Athletics' Nick Hundley: Undergoes knee surgery
Hundley underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee Tuesday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
Hundley landed on the 10-day injured list June 8 due to back spasms, though it appears he was also dealing with a knee injury that needed to be surgically repaired. According to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, manager Bob Melvin expects the 35-year-old to miss about six weeks, which would put his return in early August. Beau Taylor is expected to fill in as the backup catcher until Hundley can return.

Athletics' Nick Hundley: Recovery going slowly
Hundley (back) has not resumed baseball activities and is expected to remain sidelined beyond the minimum 10 days that his injured-list stint requires, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
Hundley's back spasms haven't subsided much since he began experiencing them June 8 during a doubleheader against the Rangers. He received a cortisone shot earlier this past week to alleviate some of the pain, but he still has considerable physical limitations. As such, Hundley remains without a firm timetable for return, and he also faces the prospect of eventual competition from Chris Herrmann (knee), who is two games into a rehab assignment with Triple-A Las Vegas.

Athletics' Nick Hundley: Posts three hits
Hundley went 3-for-4 with a home run, a double, two RBI and a walk during a 7-2 victory against the Indians on Wednesday.
This was Hundley's first three-hit game of the season, and considering he came into the night with only three hits during the entire month of May, this performance comes as a surprise. Granted, Hundley has only received 17 at-bats this month, but that may increase since he's 4-for-7 with two home runs in his last three games. Hundley is batting .237 with six extra-base hits, five RBI and five runs in 59 at-bats this season.

Athletics' Nick Hundley: Slugs first homer
Hundley went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run in a win over the Tigers on Saturday.
The veteran backstop parlayed one of his relatively rare starting opportunities into a productive showing, blasting his first round tripper of the season in the process. Hundley got his average to the Mendoza Line for the first time this season with Saturday's production, and he's now hit safely in three of four starts this month. Moreover, all three of his May hits thus far have gone for extra bases, with Hundley notching a double, a triple and the aforementioned homer.

Athletics' Nick Hundley: Triples, scores on same play
Hundley went 1-for-3 with a triple and a run in a win over the Indians on Saturday.
The veteran backstop made good use of a relatively rare playing opportunity, lacing his first three-bagger of the season in the fifth and ultimately scoring on the play due to a throwing error by Jake Bauers. Hundley has logged only 54 plate appearances all season and has just one RBI, as Josh Phegley's productive bat has kept the latter on the heavy side of the platoon behind the dish. Factoring in Saturday's production, Hundley is hitting .192 on the season, although he's now hit safely in four of his last five starts.
