Mitch Moreland: Brings end to career
Moreland announced Tuesday that he has retired from professional baseball, Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports.
Though the 37-year-old Moreland hasn't officially filed his retirement players, he hasn't appeared in an MLB game since August 2021 and went unsigned all of last season and over the past offseason. At this point, the veteran first baseman appears content to move on to the next phase of his career, which could including a coaching role within the Red Sox organization, given that he was attendance for the team's spring training workout Tuesday. Whatever is next for Moreland, he'll retire with a career .251/.318/.446 slash line, 186 home runs and 618 RBI across 1,260 regular-season games over parts of 12 seasons with Texas, Boston, San Diego and Oakland. Moreland won the lone Gold Glove of his career in 2016 with Boston and also made an All-Star appearance and won a World Series ring with the Red Sox in 2018.

Athletics' Mitch Moreland: Gets cortisone shot for wrist
Moreland (wrist) received a cortisone shot last week and still could require surgery this offseason, the team's official site reports.
The veteran landed on the injured list due to a tendon issue in his wrist Aug. 31, and he's running out of time to make a return before the end of the regular season. Team trainer Nick Paparesta acknowledged the need for a possible surgery "down the road", although the team and Moreland are set to wait out the effects of the cortisone shot for the time being before any further course of action is determined.

Athletics' Mitch Moreland: Back with team Monday
Moreland returned to the Athletics on Monday after being away for several days while getting alternate opinions on his wrist injury, the Associated Press reports.
The veteran has been on the injured list since Aug. 31 and doesn't yet have a firm timetable for any kind of rehab work or a return to action. Moreland was slashing an underwhelming .227/.286/.415 over 81 games prior to going on the shelf, with his season deemed a disappointment after he was expected to provide a more consistent left-handed bat.

Athletics' Mitch Moreland: Slated to miss more than 10 days
Moreland (wrist) will be on the injured list longer than the minimum of 10 days, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
Moreland landed on the 10-day IL on Tuesday, and manager Bob Melvin revealed Friday that the 35-year-old will be in a splint "for at least a few weeks," Shayna Rubin of The San Jose Mercury News reports. A better timetable for his return will likely be revealed once he sheds his splint, but Jed Lowrie and Khris Davis could split playing time as the designated hitter in Moreland's absence.

Athletics' Mitch Moreland: Goes on IL with wrist tendinitis
Moreland was placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with left wrist tendinitis, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Moreland hasn't played since going 0-for-3 with a walk and run scored in Thursday's loss to the Yankees, and him not appearing in the last three games seems likely to be due to the wrist issue. His move to the injured list is retroactive to Saturday, so he'll be eligible to be activated Sept. 7, though it's possible he'll require more time to recover. In his absence, Jed Lowrie becomes further cemented as the primary DH against right-handed starters, which should open up more playing time for Tony Kemp at the keystone.

Athletics' Mitch Moreland: Fades into reserve role
Moreland is out of the lineup for the third time in four games Wednesday versus the White Sox, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Moreland had a brief window of playing time reopen last week when Josh Harrison (quadriceps) and Elvis Andrus (personal) missed a few games, but both players have since recaptured everyday roles in the middle infield. Jed Lowrie will serve as the Athletics' designated hitter Wednesday and is likely to see most of the reps against right-handed pitching moving forward, leaving Moreland will no path to steady at-bats while Oakland is nearly at full strength.

Athletics' Mitch Moreland: Benched against lefty
Moreland is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rangers.
With Josh Harrison (quadriceps) missing time of late, playing time has opened back up for Moreland, who started in each of the last four games while going 6-for-17 with three home runs and a triple. The lefty-hitting Moreland will move back to the bench with a southpaw (Kolby Allard) on the bump for Texas. Moreland's opportunities versus right-handed pitching could soon take a hit, as Harrison ran the bases Sunday and could be ready to rejoin the lineup Monday versus the White Sox, according to Martin Gallegos of MLB.com.

Athletics' Mitch Moreland: Slugs pair of homers
Moreland went 2-for-5 with two home runs, two RBI and three runs scored Thursday against Cleveland.
Moreland went yard in the fifth and ninth frames, contributing to the Athletics' 17-run offensive outburst Thursday. He now has nine home runs on the season, with this being his second multi-homer effort. Moreland hadn't gone yard since July 16, and he had collected only five hits in 32 at-bats in that span. Though he has become primarily a bench bat after the team acquired Josh Harrison, Moreland could be in line for more at bats if Harrison's quad strain keeps him sidelined.

It's the third time in the past four games Moreland is on the bench, despite the fact the A's have faced a right-handed starter in each contest. Overall the veteran slugger has started only one of the past six games. Jed Lowrie will serve as the designated hitter while Josh Harrison starts at second base.

Athletics' Mitch Moreland: Not in Saturday's lineup
Moreland will sit Saturday against the Rangers.
Moreland typically starts against righties and sits against lefties, but his day off here against right-hander Drew Anderson means he's now sat against two of the last three righties the Athletics have faced. Athletics' Mitch Moreland: Takes seat Tuesday
Moreland is on the bench for Tuesday's game against the Padres, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
Moreland has gone just 5-for-29, albeit with four extra-base hits, since the All-Star break. He's hitting .228/.287/.386 this season, which are certainly underwhelming numbers for a designated hitter. Jed Lowrie is batting cleanup as the DH on Tuesday.

Athletics' Mitch Moreland: Sits versus righty
Moreland is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Padres, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
The lefty-hitting Moreland didn't start in three out of Oakland's last four games, with all of his benchings coming against left-handed starting pitchers. Though the Padres will bring a right-hander (Joe Musgrove) to the hill for the series finale, Moreland will remain on the bench, an indication his hold on a strong-side platoon role at designated hitter could be slipping. Though he's fared well against righties for most his career, he's been a below-average hitter in those matchups in 2021, slashing .242/.298/.392 (94 wRC+) in 168 plate appearances.

Athletics' Mitch Moreland: Sitting in NL park
Moreland is out of the lineup Tuesday at San Diego, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Moreland was not in the lineup for Sunday's series finale against the Mariners, and he's on the bench again Tuesday since the A's are without the designated hitter in an NL park. It's only a two-game series in San Diego, so the veteran slugger should be back in the lineup for the upcoming four-game set against the Angels, which begins Thursday.

Moreland is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Padres.
Moreland will be squeezed out of the lineup for a second straight day with no designated hitter available in San Diego. Since southpaw Blake Snell is starting for the Padres, there's a good chance the lefty-hitting Moreland would have sat if the game was played in Oakland, too.
