  • Reds' Brandon Barnes: Links up with Reds on MiLB deal

Barnes agreed Sunday with the Reds on a minor-league contract, Doug Gray of RedsMinorLeagues.com reports. Barnes' deal doesn't include an invitation to the Reds' major-league camp, so he'll presumably be vying for an outfield spot on the Triple-A Louisville roster. The 33-year-old spent the 2019 season between the Indians' and Twins' Triple-A affiliates, slashing .253/.320/.504 with 30 home runs and 11 steals between the two stops.

  • Twins' Brandon Barnes: Traded to Twins

Barnes was traded to the Twins and assigned to Triple-A Rochester on Thursday, Brandon Warne of ZoneCoverage.com reports. The 33-year-old played well for Triple-A Columbus, amassing a slash line of .274/.337/.535 with 24 home runs and 77 RBI so far this season. Given his veteran presence, Barnes could see some time with the major-league squad if more depth is needed as long as he continues to impress at the Triple-A level.

Barnes was sent outright to Triple-A Columbus on Thursday and will now return to the free-agent pool. The 32-year-old played 19 games with Cleveland -- going 5-for-19 with a home run, two RBI and two walks -- and his most likely path to a roster in 2019 is through a minor-league contract.

  • Indians' Brandon Barnes: Signs with Indians on minors deal

Barnes signed a minor-league deal with the Indians that includes an invitation to spring training, Chris Cotillo of SB Nation reports. The 31-year-old journeyman failed to reach the majors for the first time since 2011, spending all of 2017 at the Triple-A level with the Marlins. He hit .276/.331/.420 with 11 home runs and 15 steals in 451 plate appearances in the Pacific Coast League. The Indians have enough outfield depth that they are invested in that it would be hard to envision Barnes carving out a big-league role in 2018 without a handful of injuries.

Barnes is starting center field again Monday versus the Reds, Zach Buchanan of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Barnes came into the season looking like the Rockies' fifth outfielder, but he'll slot into the starting lineup once again despite the fact that right-hander Dan Straily is on the mound for the Reds. He'll bat sixth for Colorado, which could offer him a decent amount of RBI opportunities Monday night.

  • Rockies' Brandon Barnes: Starting in center field Wednesday

Barnes is starting in center field and batting eighth in Wednesday's game against the Diamondbacks, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. With left-hander Patrick Corbin on the bump for Arizona, everyday center fielder Charlie Blackmon is taking a seat on the bench, allowing Barnes to get his first start of the season. He hasn't historically been better against left-handed pitching, but the drop-off of Blackmon's numbers against lefties was enough to get Barnes into the lineup Wednesday.

  • Rockies' Brandon Barnes: Makes Opening Day roster

Barnes made the Opening Day roster as a fifth outfielder. Barnes was in a competition with pitchers Jason Gurka and Scott Oberg for the final two roster spots, but the Rockies opted to go with an eight-man bullpen, giving Barnes a spot on the roster. That being said, the outfielder will be blocked to consistent playing time with the Rockies outfield very much set and Ryan Raburn projected to be the first outfielder off the bench. However, Barnes has more experience in center field than Raburn, which could help him see more playing time when the Rockies' regulars are resting.

  • Rockies' Brandon Barnes: Competing for final two roster spots

Barnes is in the running for one of the final two roster spots, Nick Groke of the Denver Post reports. Left-hander Jason Gurka and right-hander Scott Oberg are also competing for the final two spots. Barnes has had a decent spring, batting .294 with five extra-base hits in 21 spring games, but he continues to strike out like no other, as he's whiffed 17 times already. It seems like Barnes' fate will rest less on his performance, though, as it will likely be determined by whether the Rockies want to carry nine relievers while Jon Gray (abdomen) is out or if they feel alright with only carrying eight.

  • Rockies' Brandon Barnes: Roster spot murky with Raburn signing

Barnes' 25-man roster spot is in jeopardy after the Rockies selected the contract of Ryan Raburn to be their fourth outfielder, Nick Groke of the Denver Post reports. Barnes seemed to be set as the Rockies fourth outfielder despite his continuing strikeout issues, but now that Ryan Raburn is in town to act as a right-handed alternative in the outfield, Barnes' spot is not so secure anymore. There is a chance that he could make the roster as a fifth outfielder if the Rockies opt to go with an eight-man bullpen on Opening Day, although that's not exactly reassuring considering how well both Miguel Castro and Scott Oberg (the two relievers competing for the eighth bullpen spot) are pitching this spring.
