Jason Kipnis: Retires from baseball
Kipnis announced Monday via his personal Twitter account that he has retired from professional baseball.
The 35-year-old Kipnis last played in 2021, when he was a member of the Atlanta organization. He played exclusively at the Triple-A level that season and hasn't surfaced in the majors since 2020, when he saw action in 44 games for the Cubs. Over his 10 total seasons in the big leagues -- nine of which came as a member of Cleveland -- Kipnis was named an All-Star twice, and he slashed .260/.333/.416 with 126 homers and 136 stolen bases over 1,165 career plate appearances.

Kipnis was cut loose by Atlanta a few days earlier, but he'll rejoin the organization prior to the start of the season and head to the minors as infield depth. Kipnis appeared in 44 big-league contests a season ago, slashing .237/.341/.404 with three homers and 16 RBI with the Cubs.

Jason Kipnis: Released by Atlanta
Kipnis was released by Atlanta on Saturday.
Kipnis was unable to secure a spot on Atlanta's Opening Day roster after he hit .241 with one home run and three RBI in 12 spring games this year. He'll likely have to settle for a depth role if he's able to secure a spot on another roster in 2021.

Braves' Jason Kipnis: Signs with Atlanta
Kipnis signed with Atlanta on Monday, the veteran announced on his personal Twitter page.
The deal is a minor-league one which includes an invitation to big-league camp, per Jon Heyman of MLB Network, though there's seemingly a strong chance Kipnis will be able to win a roster spot. The 33-year-old's star days are long behind him, but he had a solid season last year for his hometown Cubs, producing an above-average batting line (.237/.341/.404) for the first time since 2016. He's not someone a contender would want to turn to for everyday at-bats at this stage of his career, but he should be a capable backup and injury fill-in as long as he ages gracefully.

Kipnis is not in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Twins.
Kipnis served as the designated hitter Friday and went 0-for-3, and he'll head to the bench for the second game of the series against Minnesota with David Bote in at DH and Nico Hoerner starting at second base. The veteran infielder has plenty of competition for at-bats at second base and DH, so his playing time figures to be a bit inconsistent as manager David Ross mixes and matches with his lineups.
