Rangers' Mike Foltynewicz: Returns in relief role
Foltynewicz worked out of the bullpen Sunday in his first game back from the COVID-19 injured list, tossing three innings while yielding two runs on two hits and two walks in the Rangers' 7-2 loss to the White Sox.
Texas cleared room for him on the 40-man roster and 28-man active roster by designating starting pitcher Kohei Arihara for assignment, but Foltynewicz doesn't look like he'll end up replacing Arihara in the rotation. Instead, Dane Dunning will be added to the Rangers' six-man rotation Tuesday in New York, likely leaving Foltynewicz to settle for low-leverage mop-up work out of the bullpen over the final two weeks of the season. Even after missing about a month of action while he was on the COVID-19 IL, Foltynewicz has still allowed the third-most home runs (34) of any pitcher in 2021, trailing only teammate Jordan Lyles (37) and Nationals lefty Patrick Corbin (36).

Rangers' Mike Foltynewicz: Returns from injured list
Foltynewicz (undisclosed) was activated from the COVID-19 injured list Sunday.
Foltynewicz has been on the COVID IL since Aug. 23, but he resumed workouts last week and is now back on the active roster. The team hasn't announced the right-hander's role for the final two weeks of the season, but he could fill the vacant spot in the rotation left by Kohei Arihara, who was designated for assignment Sunday in a corresponding move.

Rangers' Mike Foltynewicz: Back with Rangers
Foltynewicz (undisclosed) has returned to the Rangers but is still on the COVID-19 injured list as of Friday, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports.
The right-hander began workouts at the Rangers' spring training facility after clearing COVID protocols last week, and now he's rejoined the Rangers. It's still not entirely clear when Foltynewicz is expected to be added back to the major-league roster, nor whether he'll finish the season as a starter or reliever.

Rangers' Mike Foltynewicz: Resumes workouts
Foltynewicz (COVID-19 injured list) was cleared Monday to resume working out at the Rangers' spring training facility in Arizona, Levi Weaver of The Athletic reports.
Foltynewicz is in the process of building up again after completing a quarantine period following his placement on the COVID-19 IL on Aug. 23. The Rangers aren't setting a target date for Foltynewicz's return, but even once he makes it back from the IL, he may not be guaranteed a rotation spot. The 29-year-old is playing on an expiring contract and has submitted a 5.54 ERA over 130 innings while serving up 34 home runs -- tied for the second-most in the majors -- so he wouldn't seem to factor into the rebuilding Rangers' plans heading into 2022.

Rangers' Mike Foltynewicz: Heads to COVID IL
The Rangers placed Foltynewicz on the COVID-19 injured list Monday, Chris Halicke of SI.com reports.
Foltynewicz was one of three Rangers players to land on the COVID-19 IL on Monday and the fourth to join the list in less than a week after utility man Charlie Culberson was deactivated Friday. The Rangers haven't revealed whether Foltynewicz has tested positive for the coronavirus or if he's merely been placed on the IL due to reasons related to contac tracing, but regardless, he won't join Texas for its upcoming three-game road trip in Cleveland. Foltynewicz had been on track to start Wednesday, but Spencer Howard will be pushed up a day in the pitching schedule to replace the right-hander.

Rangers' Mike Foltynewicz: Loses 12th game
Foltynewicz (2-12) allowed two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out five over six innings, taking the loss to the Mariners on Wednesday.
This was the third straight quality start for Foltynewicz, who has dropped his home run rate significantly during that run. The right-hander has not won since June 29, a span of eight starts, and looks to snap that winless streak next Wednesday on the road against Cleveland.

Rangers' Mike Foltynewicz: Takes loss despite solid start
Foltynewicz (2-11) allowed three earned runs on six hits while striking out six across seven innings, taking the loss to the Mariners on Thursday.
Foltynewicz had one of his best outings of the season, but was outdone by opposing pitcher Marco Gonzalez, who gave up one run in a complete-game effort. Foltynewicz allowed two solo home runs to lose the lead, one by J.P. Crawford and the other by Jake Fraley. The right-hander has a 5.66 ERA and 1.30 WHIP this season but has allowed three or fewer runs in his last three starts.

Rangers' Mike Foltynewicz: Turns in quality start
Foltynewicz allowed one run on two hits and three walks over six innings in Friday's loss to Oakland. He struck out two and did not factor in the decision.
The only time Foltynewicz really faced any danger was when he loaded the bases with no outs in the fourth inning, but he managed to escape after allowing just one run. He's given up just three earned runs over his last two starts after being crushed for 16 runs in his previous two appearances. The veteran righty is sporting a 5.77 ERA and an 80:31 K:BB through 22 starts. Foltynewicz is projected to take the mound in Seattle next week.

Rangers' Mike Foltynewicz: Takes no-decision Sunday
Foltynewicz allowed two runs on three hits and three walks while striking out one over five innings for a no-decision in Sunday's 4-3 win over Seattle.
Foltynewicz wasn't very efficient, needing 93 pitches for 15 outs, but this has to be seen as a positive. He didn't give up any home runs for the first time in 11 starts after entering the contest with 20 homers allowed over the previous 50.1 innings. The right-hander, who feels like he's one more bad start away from losing a spot in the rotation, is next expected to pitch Friday on the road in Oakland.

Rangers' Mike Foltynewicz: Takes 10th loss
Foltynewicz (2-10) allowed six runs (five earned) on five hits and two walks while striking out four across four innings to take the loss Thursday against the Tigers.

He's now surrendered multiple homers in each of his last four starts, during which time he's allowed 22 earned runs across 19 innings. As a result, Foltynewicz's ERA has ballooned to 6.11 across 106 innings on the campaign. He's showcased decent control in that span by surrendering only 25 walks, though he has struck out only 77.

Rangers' Mike Foltynewicz: Next start on short rest
Foltynewicz is the expected starter for Thursday's game at Detroit, Joseph Hoyt of the Dallas Morning News reports.
Foltynewicz, who was shelled in his previous start Sunday, will be working on short rest. Texas manager Chris Woodward considered a bullpen day but eventually landed on Foltynewicz as the starter for the series finale against the Tigers. Woodward said the right-hander will be on a limited pitch count due to the abbreviated rest schedule; Foltynewicz threw 42 pitches Sunday and was removed after 1.2 innings. This could be an important start for Foltynewicz, considering Woodward, whose team was shut out in three straight contests before scoring a run Tuesday night, has been vocal about his team's recent performance and expressed a desire for his players to show more fight, per Jordan Horrobin of MLB.com.

Foltynewicz (2-9) lost Sunday's matchup against Toronto in the second game of a doubleheader, allowing 10 runs on eight hits and two walks in 1.2 innings.

Foltynewicz (2-8) allowed four earned runs on four hits and one walk while striking out five across seven innings, taking the loss to the Mariners on Sunday.
Although Foltynewicz outlasted opposing pitcher Chris Flexen, he allowed three more runs than him to take the loss. All four runs came on a pair of home runs in the third and fourth innings. The 29-year-old has struggled this season and has not received much run support from a bad offense. He carries a 5.17 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP, leading the Rangers in losses (8).

Rangers' Mike Foltynewicz: Earns first win since April
Foltynewicz (2-7) allowed two runs on four hits and one walk while striking out six over seven innings to pick up the win over Oakland on Tuesday.
Foltynewicz allowed a first-inning home run, but he settled in to give Texas hitters a chance to erase the lead. He picked up a win for the first time since April 27, a span of 11 starts. Homers have been his bane in 2021; he's given up 19, which ranks tied for second in MLB. The Rangers have considered removing him from the rotation due to the frequency of long balls, but their replacement options are thin at this time. He'll look to build off Tuesday's success in his next projected start Sunday at Seattle.

Rangers' Mike Foltynewicz: Posts quality start
Foltynewicz got the no-decision in Wednesday's 5-3 victory over Oakland, allowing two runs on six hits with five strikeouts in six innings.
Foltynewicz was cruising through six innings, having allowed no runs on just 83 pitches, but ran into trouble when he surrendered a leadoff home run in the seventh followed by a double that ultimately got him the hook. It was the veteran righty's first quality start in nearly a month and he'll look for his first win since April against Oakland again next week.

Rangers' Mike Foltynewicz: Hammered by Dodgers
Foltynewicz (1-7) took the loss in Friday's 12-1 defeat at the hands of the Dodgers, allowing eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits and a walk with one strikeout in 2.2 innings.
Los Angeles jumped on Foltynewicz early with six runs in the first inning, and he was removed with two outs in the third after allowing two more runs. After this disastrous outing, Foltynewicz's ERA sits at 5.48, and a total of eight strikeouts in 24 innings over his last five starts is difficult to stomach for fantasy purposes.
