Harvey announced his retirement from professional baseball Friday. Harvey last pitched in the majors in 2021, spending 2022 in the Orioles' minor-league system. Harvey finishes his major-league career with a 50-66 record and 4.42 ERA over parts of nine seasons. He made one All-Star team.

Harvey elected free agency Thursday, per Triple-A Norfolk's transaction log. Harvey spent the entire season in the minor leagues and the majority of that time with Norfolk. He maintained a 4.31 ERA and 1.40 WHIP across 54.1 innings and will likely have to settle for a minor-league deal in 2023.

  • Orioles' Matt Harvey: Back from suspension at Triple-A

Harvey (suspension) was activated by Triple-A Norfolk and will start Friday against Jacksonville, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. Harvey made three starts between High-A Aberdeen and Double-A Bowie over the past couple weeks and has now been cleared to join Norfolk after completing his suspension for participating in the distribution of a prohibited Drug of Abuse. The veteran right-hander joined Baltimore on a minor-league deal in early April and already appears close to being fully stretched out given he covered 16 frames during his outings in the lower minors. He finished with a 6.27 ERA, 1.54 WHIP and 95:37 K:BB across 127. innings for the Orioles last year.

  • Orioles' Matt Harvey: Starting rehab stint

Harvey (suspension) will report to High-A Aberdeen on Thursday to begin a rehab assignment, Andy Kostka of The Baltimore Sun reports. Harvey signed a minor-league deal with Baltimore in early April, but he was handed a 60-game suspension, which began April 29, for participating in the distribution of a prohibited Drug of Abuse. The veteran right-hander has yet to fully serve the suspension, though he can pitch in the lower minors to get built up before being activated by Triple-A Norfolk. Harvey made 28 starts for the Orioles last season and had a 6.27 ERA, 1.54 WHIP and 95:37 K:BB over 127.2 innings.

  • Orioles' Matt Harvey: Throwing in sim game Saturday

Harvey (suspension) will pitch in a simulated game in Sarasota on Saturday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. Harvey has been serving a 60-game suspension since mid-May but is working on increasing his workload before he's ultimately cleared to return. The right-hander is eligible to begin a rehab assignment prior to completing his suspension, and he's expected to join the rotation at Triple-A Norfolk once he's ultimately activated.

  • Orioles' Matt Harvey: Issued 60-game suspension

Major League Baseball announced Tuesday that Harvey has been suspended for 60 games without pay for participating in the distribution of a prohibited Drug of Abuse in violation of MLB's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports. The suspension is retroactive to April 29, which was when the Orioles played their 20th game of the season. As a result, Harvey will effectively be serving an 80-game suspension, with the 33-year-old now ineligible to appear in the majors until at least early July. Harvey wasn't suspended for a positive drug test, but rather, for his admission during his testimony in the recent trial related to the 2019 death of former Angels pitcher Tyler Skaggs that he violated MLB's drug policy, according to Jon Heyman of MLB Network. Harvey, who joined the Orioles on a minor-league deal in April, had yet to pitch for any of Baltimore's minor-league affiliates this season while building up at extended spring training.

  • Orioles' Matt Harvey: Impressing while building up

General manager Mike Elias said Wednesday that Harvey's stuff and velocity have looked good while building up, Dan Connolly of The Athletic reports. Harvey joined the Orioles on a minor-league contract April 8, and he's been working at the team's extended spring training facility in Sarasota. It's not yet clear when the right-hander will be able to join an affiliate, but it's possible that he faces a suspension at some point after he admitted during the offseason that he provided opioids to Tyler Skaggs on several occasions, T.J. Quinn of ESPN reports.

  • Orioles' Matt Harvey: Back with Baltimore

Harvey (knee) signed a minor-league contract with the Orioles on Friday, Nathan Ruiz of The Baltimore Sun reports. Harvey was with Baltimore last season and struggled to a 6.27 ERA, 1.54 WHIP and 95:37 K:BB over 127.2 innings (28 starts) before going down with knee inflammation in early September. The veteran right-hander is now presumably healthy, but he'll likely need to build up his workload in the minors after remaining unsigned throughout spring training. Even then Harvey isn't guaranteed to make his way to the majors.

  • Orioles' Matt Harvey: Moved to 60-day IL

The Orioles transferred Harvey (knee) to the 60-day injured list Sunday. This move comes as no surprise, with Harvey already having been confirmed to be out for the season due to right knee inflammation. Eric Hanhold was selected from Triple-A Norfolk to fill Harvey's 40-man roster spot.

  • Orioles' Matt Harvey: Done for season

Harvey (knee) won't pitch again this season, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. Harvey underwent additional testing on his injured knee Friday, and the results apparently warranted the Orioles to shut the right-hander down for the remainder of the campaign. He concludes the season with a 6.27 ERA, 1.54 WHIP and 95:37 K:BB across 127.2 innings, and is now set to become a free agent in the winter.

  • Orioles' Matt Harvey: Might not return this season

Manager Brandon Hyde said Thursday that Harvey will undergo further testing on his injured knee before the team determines if he'll be able to return this season, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. Harvey was moved to the 10-day injured list earlier Thursday with right knee inflammation. Hyde said that the right-hander is "definitely going to be out a while," and given that there are just over three weeks remaining in the season, it's certainly possible that Harvey has thrown his last pitch of 2021. The 32-year-old's status should become more clear in coming days.

  • Orioles' Matt Harvey: Placed on 10-day IL

Harvey was placed on the 10-day injured list Thursday with right knee inflammation, Dan Connolly of The Athletic reports. The veteran started Wednesday giving up four runs (three earned) over 4.1 innings, and he was pulled at 74 pitches. Harvey has struggled to a 7.03 ERA in his last five starts and will now be out until at least Aug. 19. • Orioles' Matt Harvey: Another poor performance

Harvey didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 9-8 win over the Royals, giving up four runs (three earned) on nine hits and a walk over 4.1 innings. He struck out two. The veteran righty tossed 51 of 74 pitches for strikes before getting the hook, and he seemed headed for his 15th loss of the year before the O's erupted for all nine of their runs in the eighth inning. Harvey has managed to complete six frames only once in his last seven starts, struggling to a 6.48 ERA, 1.56 WHIP, 1.9 HR/9 and 23:10 K:BB through 33.1 innings over that stretch. However, Baltimore's lack of dependable alternatives -- or prospects worth auditioning -- will likely keep Harvey in the rotation over the final weeks of the season.

  • Orioles' Matt Harvey: Escapes with no-decision

Harvey yielded four runs on six hits and a walk without striking out a batter in four innings versus Toronto on Wednesday. He did not factor in the decision. Harvey had lost his last four starts, but he escaped a fifth straight defeat when Trey Mancini's RBI double tied the game at 4-4 in the seventh inning. It was still another ugly outing for Harvey, who saw his ERA tick up to 6.28 with a 1.52 WHIP and 93:36 K:BB through 123.1 innings. He remains in Baltimore's rotation primarily due to a lack of better alternatives, and he's projected to make his next start at home versus Kansas City next week.

Harvey (6-14) allowed three runs on four hits and a walk while striking out four in six innings to take the loss against the Rays on Friday. Harvey has given up at least three runs in each of his last four outings, and he's now tied for the league lead in losses. The right-hander tossed 18.1 scoreless innings in his first three starts after the All-Star break but struggled in August and posted a 6.12 ERA and 1.40 WHIP in 25 innings across five outings. He tentatively lines up to make his next start on the road against Toronto on Wednesday.

  • Orioles' Matt Harvey: Takes 13th loss

Harvey (6-13) took the loss against Atlanta on Saturday, pitching 5.1 innings and allowing four runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out five. Three of the seven hits Harvey gave up in the contest went for extra bases, including two that left the yard. After a five-game stretch from June 30 to July 30 during which the veteran hurler didn't surrender any long balls over 26.1 frames, he has given up six homers across 19 innings over his past four starts. The last three of those outings have been losses, and he is now tied for the second-most losses in MLB with 13. He'll try to get back in the win column when he next takes the mound, likely next weekend at home against Tampa Bay.

The right-hander was taken deep twice Monday as Kevin Kiermaier and Brandon Lowe helped Tampa firm up its lead in the fifth inning. Harvey has a 6.25 ERA, 1.55 WHIP and 84:33 K:BB through 108 innings this season. He's projected to face Atlanta at home this weekend in his next start.

  • Orioles' Matt Harvey: Stuck with 11th loss

Harvey (6-11) took the loss Wednesday as the Orioles were downed 5-2 by the Tigers, giving up three runs on eight hits and three walks over five innings. He struck out five. The veteran right-hander didn't pitch poorly and held Detroit scoreless for four innings, but he faded in the fifth and received no run support. Harvey's brief run of success after the All-Star break (three straight scoreless, quality starts) has ended with a predictable thud, and on the season he carries a 6.10 ERA, 1.56 WHIP and 78:32 K:BB through 103.1 innings.

  • Orioles' Matt Harvey: Set to start Wednesday

Harvey (knee) is scheduled to start Wednesday against the Tigers, Nathan Ruiz of The Baltimore Sun reports. Harvey had his previous start shortened by a knee injury, but it won't affect his availability for the next turn through the rotation. The right-hander has a 6.13 ERA for the season but has pitched much better over his last four starts with a 0.81 ERA, 0.72 WHIP and 12:3 K:BB across 22.1 innings.

  • Orioles' Matt Harvey: Outing shortened by knee issue

Harvey exited Wednesday's start against the Yankees after tweaking his knee, Dan Connolly of The Athletic reports. Harvey did not factor into the decision of Wednesday's loss, allowing two runs on three hits and a pair of walks in four innings before exiting. The Orioles have a couple off days coming up, meaning Harvey isn't scheduled to pitch again until Tuesday against the Tigers. Manager Brandon Hyde expressed optimism in the veteran righty's ability to make that start.
