  • Mariners' Didi Gregorius: Joins Tacoma after visa issues

Gregorius will hit third and play second base for Triple-A Tacoma on Friday, Paul Braverman of the Tacoma Rainiers reports.

Gregorius signed with the Mariners on a minor-league contract in early June, but his organizational debut was delayed by visa issues. The veteran infielder could join the big-league roster at some point this summer if he plays well in the Pacific Coast League, but he'll need to be added to the 40-man roster first.

  • Mariners' Didi Gregorius: Inks MiLB deal with Seattle

Gregorius signed a minor-league contract with the Mariners on Thursday, Russell Dorsey of Bally Sports reports.

Gregorius signed with Algodoneros de Union Laguna of the Mexican League on May 2 and has since recorded a 1.208 OPS with 11 homers. He will serve as an organizational depth piece at Triple-A Tacoma, but the 33-year-old shortstop could work his way onto the Mariners' bench if he continues to hit the cover off the ball. Gregorius slashed .210/.263/.304 in 232 plate appearances with the Phillies last season.

  • Didi Gregorius: Signs with Mexican League team

Gregorius signed a contract Monday with Algodoneros de Union Laguna of the Mexican League.

Gregorius was released by the Phillies last August after batting just .210/.263/.304 through 232 plate appearances and then apparently failed to attract offseason interest from major-league organizations. The veteran shortstop also struggled with Philadelphia during the 2021 season and might be done with MLB-affiliated ball at age 33.

  • Didi Gregorius: Cut loose by Philly

The Phillies released Gregorius on Thursday.

With Philadelphia bringing second baseman Jean Segura (finger) back from the 60-day injured list ahead of Thursday's series opener against the Nationals, Gregorius was in line to lose his role as the everyday shortstop to rookie Bryson Stott, who had been filling in at the keystone during Segura's absence. Stott has been inconsistent as a hitter this season, but he's still been a more productive option of late than Gregorius, who slashed .181/.234/.284 in 167 plate appearances since being activated from the IL on June 5. The 32-year-old still has some value as a defender, though he would have had limited utility off the Philadelphia bench as a left-handed hitter who wouldn't have been a platoon option. Gregorius should get a shot with another organization, but his days as an everyday starter at shortstop for anything more than a short-term basis may be over.

  • Phillies' Didi Gregorius: Sits against southpaw

Gregorius isn't starting Friday against the Pirates.

Gregorius has started mainly against right-handed pitchers this year, and he'll get a day off with southpaw Jose Quintana starting for the Pirates on Friday. Johan Camargo is taking over at shortstop and batting ninth.

  • Phillies' Didi Gregorius: Takes seat versus southpaw

Gregorius is out of the lineup for Monday's game in Atlanta.

With All-Star southpaw Max Fried on the bump for Atlanta, the lefty-hitting Gregorius will take a seat after starting in each of the Phillies' last nine games. The righty-hitting Yairo Munoz will replace Gregorius in the middle infield in the series opener.

  • Phillies' Didi Gregorius: Finally blasts first homer

Gregorius went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and two additional RBI in Saturday's 10-0 rout of the Marlins.

Gregorius made an out in each of his first two at-bats, then saw Alec Bohm intentionally walked ahead of him with two outs and two on in the sixth inning. Gregorius made Miami pay for that decision, lining a single to center field that plated two runs. He then doled out some extra revenge in the eighth, swatting a two-run homer to extend Philadelphia's already substantial lead. The long ball was the first of the season for Gregorius in his 188th plate appearance. He came into the campaign having knocked double-digit homers in six straight seasons, topping out at 27 with the Yankees in 2018.

  • Phillies' Didi Gregorius: Steals first bag of year

Gregorius went 0-for-2 with a walk and a stolen base in Friday's 2-1 win over the Marlins.

The shortstop isn't known for his speed -- his only season with double-digit steals came back in 2018 with the Yankees -- and Friday's pilfer was his first this year in 50 games. Gregorius is also still looking for his first long ball, and without a huge second half, his streak of six straight seasons with double-digit homers will come to an end. A .159 (11-for-69) batting average over his last 20 games doesn't suggest a surge is coming any time soon, however.

  • Phillies' Didi Gregorius: Gets Sunday off

Gregorius is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Cardinals.

Gregorius recently overcame a knee injury and started in each of the Phillies' last four games, going 2-for-13 with a triple, two walks and an RBI across those contests. He isn't believed to be dealing with a setback to his knee, so his absence from the lineup Sunday most likely amounts to a maintenance day.

  • Phillies' Didi Gregorius: Starting Wednesday

Gregorius (knee) is starting at shortstop and batting sixth Wednesday versus the Nationals, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports.

Gregorius will be back in the lineup Wednesday after missing the last three games while dealing with a sore left knee. The 32-year-old has produced at least one hit in six of his last eight contests, including a double and triple over that span.

  • Phillies' Didi Gregorius: Sitting again Tuesday

Gregorius (knee) isn't starting Tuesday against the Nationals, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports.

Gregorius should still be considered day-to-day as he deals with left knee soreness. Bryson Stott starts at shortstop while Matt Vierling plays second base Tuesday.

  • Phillies' Didi Gregorius: Tending to sore knee

Phillies interim manager Rob Thomson said Gregorius will remain out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Cardinals after receiving a pain-killing injection to help ease soreness in his left knee, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports.

The knee issue will keep Gregorius on the bench for the second day in a row, and with the Phillies off the schedule Monday, he'll get another day to wait for the shot to run its course before potentially checking back into the lineup for Tuesday's series opener with the Nationals. Thomson said the lingering knee issue may be at the root of Gregorius' dearth of power this season; the 32-year-old has yet to hit a home run in 155 plate appearances. Gregorius hasn't recorded a stolen base either, and his lack of production in the counting-stats categories has made it tough to justify rostering him outside of NL-only leagues.
