Ryan Cook: Released by Marlins
Cook was released by the Marlins on Monday.
Cook signed a minor-league contract with the Marlins in January after playing in Japan last season. The 33-year-old was part of Miami's 60-man player pool during camp, but he'll hit free agency after failing to find a role with the club ahead of the regular season. Given Cook's lack of results over a limited sample in recent seasons, it's unlikely that he'll find significant playing time in the majors in 2020.

Marlins' Ryan Cook: Gets summer camp invite
Cook is part of the Marlins' 60-man player pool, Craig Mish of SportsGrid.com reports.
Cook, who turns 33 on Tuesday, played in Japan in 2019. While he boasts a career 3.58 ERA in the majors, he has not logged an ERA under 5.00 since 2014. If he pitches in the majors this season, it would likely be in a low-leverage role.

Marlins' Ryan Cook: Dealing with toe injury
Cook has yet to pitch in a Grapefruit League game due to a toe injury, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.
The veteran right-hander was expected to compete for a spot in the Marlins' bullpen this spring after pitching in Japan last season, but Cook never got a chance due to the injury. He was tossing bullpen sessions when MLB was on pause and should be fully recovered once the league resumes play, but the missed time likely cost him a shot at making the big-league roster.

Marlins' Ryan Cook: Returns stateside
Cook signed a minor-league contract with the Marlins on Tuesday, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports.
Cook will make between $750,000 and $1 million if he makes the big-league roster. The 32-year-old spent last season pitching for the Yomiuri Giants in Japan. In 224 career innings in the majors, he owns a solid 3.58 ERA, though his most recent successful season was all the way back in 2014, when he recorded a 3.42 ERA in 50 innings for Oakland.

Mariners' Ryan Cook: Sent down to Triple-A
Cook was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma on Friday.
The veteran righty has a 6.75 ERA in 9.1 innings for the Mariners this season. He was sent down to make way for Nick Vincent's return from a groin injury. Cook could return to the big leagues later in the season but is unlikely to be much of a fantasy asset if and when he does.

Mariners' Ryan Cook: Notches first win
Cook (1-0) fired a scoreless eighth inning in a win over the Red Sox on Friday, allowing a hit and two walks while recording a strikeout.
The pinch-hitting Denard Span ultimately made a winner out of Cook with a two-run double in the bottom of the eighth, a rare stroke of luck for the veteran reliever. Cook has had a rough time on and off the field since late May, as he'd allowed five earned runs over his four prior appearances and also taken a tumble down the dugout steps at Minute Maid Park on June 5. Cook's previously unblemished ERA has risen to 5.19 over his last five outings, but he's been of some value in formats that count holds by amassing five in 10 appearances overall.

Mariners' Ryan Cook: Takes tumble down dugout steps
Cook slipped on the dugout steps at Minute Maid Park prior to Tuesday's game and initially appeared to be in pain, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.
The veteran reliever apparently took his tumble not far from where manager Scott Servais was conducting a pregame interview, prompting some alarm from the skipper and team trainers. However, Divish noted that after being checked out by the training staff, Cook reported that he expected to be fine. The 30-year-old has appeared in six games out of the bullpen for the Mariners, posting a 3.60 ERA, 0.80 WHIP and six strikeouts over five innings.

Mariners' Ryan Cook: Grabs hold in '18 debut
Cook notched his first hold of the season in a loss to the Tigers on Thursday, firing a scoreless 1.1 innings with a strikeout.
Just recalled from Triple-A Tacoma earlier in the day, Cook was razor sharp while getting four outs on an efficient 15 pitches. The veteran's appearance was his first at the big-league level since 2015, and his strong debut effort was an extension of the success he'd enjoyed with the Rainiers thus far in 2018 (2.03 ERA, 0.99 WHIP across 13.1 innings).

During 13 outing with Tacoma in 2018, he's posted a 2.03 ERA and 0.99 WHIP with a 17:3 K:BB across 13.1 innings.

Mariners' Ryan Cook: Sent to minors camp
The Mariners reassigned Cook to their minor-league camp Sunday, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.
After missing the entire 2017 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery, Cook unsurprisingly looked rusty in spring training, giving up 10 runs on 14 hits and seven walks over seven frames. He'll have to iron out the kinks and regain velocity in the high minors before perhaps warranting a look from the big club later this season.
