Jefry Marte: Heads to Japan
Marte signed a contract with the Hanshin Tigers of Nippon Professional Baseball in Japan on Thursday, The Japan Times reports.
Marte was designated for assignment by the Angels in November and elected free agency after spending the last two years in Los Angeles. The 27-year-old slashed .216/.273/.371 with seven home runs in 209 plate appearances in 2018, and will now test his luck overseas.

Angels' Jefry Marte: Booted from 40-man roster
Marte was outrighted from the Angels' 40-man roster Friday.
In order to free up some room for their younger prospects, the Angels elected to cast Marte, Eduardo Paredes, Odrisamer Despaigne, Deck McGuire and Francisco Arcia from the 40-man roster. In 90 games for the big-league club in 2018, Marte slashed .216/.273/.371 with seven home runs and 22 RBI.

Angels' Jefry Marte: Homers off righty
Marte went 1-for-3 with a walk, a home run and a pair of runs scored in Monday's extra-innings win over Texas.
Marte got a rare start against a right-handed starter and went yard for the sixth time this season. The 27-year-old started at first base with Jose Miguel Fernandez sliding over to cover second, a situation that could continue if Andrelton Simmons (knee) is forced to miss additional time. Marte is slashing .214/.265/.353 over 200 plate appearances this year.

Angels' Jefry Marte: Homers off bench
Marte homered in his lone at-bat in Tuesday's loss to Arizona.
The emergence of Taylor Ward at third base and the healthy combination of Albert Pujols and Shohei Ohtani as the Angels' primary first base and designated hitter options have limited Marte to a bench role in August. The 27-year-old hasn't helped his case for playing time, slashing just .214/.257/.371 over 148 plate appearances this season.

Angels' Jefry Marte: Playing time declines
Marte will start at first base and bat eighth Sunday against the Mariners, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.
Marte has seen his opportunities tail off since Albert Pujols returned from the 10-day disabled list July 23, as he'll pick up just his second start in seven games. He'll be entering the lineup Sunday with Shohei Ohtani taking a seat with a lefty (Marco Gonzales) twirling for the Mariners.

Angels' Jefry Marte: Hits fourth home run
Marte went 2-for-3 with a three-run home run Sunday against the Dodgers.
Marte was the entirety of the Angels' offense Sunday, launching a three-run home run off Clayton Kershaw in the fourth inning. It was his fourth home run of the season and first since June 4. His two hits were his first since he came off the disabled list July 5, though he has managed to post a .473 slugging percentage in 55 at-bats against southpaws this season.

Angels' Jefry Marte: Records just one at-bat in start
Marte started at first base Thursday, scoring a run after getting hit by a pitch in his lone at-bat in a win over Seattle.
The 27-year-old received his second consecutive start against a southpaw, but he was subbed out for Luis Valbuena after Mariners starter James Paxton (back) exited the contest in the first inning. Marte has been exclusively deployed against left-handed starters on days where Shohei Ohtani sits since returning from the disabled list July 5. Marte is slashing .242/.296/.408 in 91 plate appearances this season, and he won't move the fantasy needle in his limited role.

Marte was forced to exit Monday's game against the Mariners with what was originally diagnosed as a left wrist contusion. Angels' Jefry Marte: Receives rare start
Marte started at first base and went 0-for-2 before being lifted for a pinch-hitter in Monday's loss to Detroit.
Marte was penciled into the lineup with Shohei Ohtani (rest) getting the day off and with a southpaw on the mound. This appears to be the recipe for getting the backup platoon infielder into the lineup, which severely limits his fantasy utility despite a respectable .277/.338/.462 slash line in 71 plate appearances.

Angels' Jefry Marte: Hits second home run
Marte went 3-for-5 with a three-run home run Saturday against the Mariners.
Marte gave the Angels what appeared to be a commanding lead with his home run in the sixth inning, his second of the season. He has seen inconsistent at-bats this season, mostly coming when there are injuries to regular starters or when Shohei Ohtani is out of the lineup, but has produced well when given the opportunity. Marte holds a .333/.382/.569 slash in 51 at-bats this season.

Angels' Jefry Marte: Homers Saturday
Marte went 1-for-2 with a solo homer Saturday against the Giants.
Shohei Ohtani was out of the lineup with left-handed pitcher Derek Holland on the mound, so Marte got the chance to start his ninth game of the season, taking advantage by hitting his first home run of the season in the second inning. Marte's numbers on a per-game basis are strong in limited at-bats this year, but he's shown little offensive punch in previous opportunities and does not have a clear path to more consistent at-bats.

Angels' Jefry Marte: Records three hits
Marte went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI Tuesday against the Rangers.
As has been the case, when Shohei Ohtani sits Marte draws the start at first base with Albert Pujols shifting to DH. He's taken advantage of those spot starts this season, posting three multi-hit games as well as three extra-base hits. Despite the hot start, he's shown next to no offensive prowess in past seasons and his sporadic playing time ensures that he has little fantasy value.
