    Sanchez agreed Monday with the Padres on a minor-league contract that includes an invitation to MLB spring training, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports.

    The 33-year-old right-hander will be making his return to affiliated ball in 2023 after spending the 2020 and 2021 seasons in Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball with the Yomiuri Giants before sitting out the entire 2022 campaign. Sanchez, who previously received a cup of coffee in the big leagues with Pittsburgh in 2017, submitted a 4.68 ERA and 54:23 K:BB in 73 innings over his final season in Japan.

  • Angel Sanchez: Agrees to play in Japan

    Sanchez has agreed to a multi-year contract with the Yomiuri Giants, Robert Murray reports.

    Sanchez, who was with the Pirates in MLB in 2017, played the past two seasons in South Korea and will move to Japan. He went 17-5 with a 2.62 ERA with the SK Wyverns last season. He'll move to the Nippon Professional Baseball league, rejecting interest from MLB teams.

    Sanchez signed a one-year, $1.1 million contract to play for South Korean baseball club SK Wyverns, the Yonhap News Agency reports.

    Sanchez finally reached the majors last year at age 27 and struggled with Pittsburgh as he had a 8.76 ERA in 12.1 innings. He can reach the high-90s with his fastball and was productive at Triple-A, so he could be a late bloomer who blossoms overseas and returns to MLB.

    Sanchez had a tough time when he got his first taste of the majors in 2017. He pitched 12.1 innings over eight games, during which he allowed 12 runs on 16 hits and a walk. He struggled to keep the ball in the park, as five of the 16 hits he allowed were home runs. If another team opts to sign Sanchez, he'll likely serve as organizational depth in the bullpen.
