Giants' Mark Canha: Logs steal in loss
Canha went 0-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base in Saturday's 4-3 loss to the Marlins.
Canha has been mostly limited to a short-side platoon role since he was traded from the Tigers to the Giants, but he got a rare start versus a right-hander amid LaMonte Wade's slump. Since the trade, Canha has gone 13-for-47 (.277) with no home runs, three RBI, three runs scored and two doubles. He's at a .237/.340/.346 slash line with seven homers, five steals, 41 RBI, 45 runs scored and 19 doubles over 432 plate appearances this season, which has him on pace for one of the worst years of his career.

Giants' Mark Canha: Collects four hits, drives in two
Canha went 4-for-6 with a double and two RBI Thursday against the Nationals.
Canha made his biggest impact since being acquired by the Giants, driving in two and collecting his first four-hit game since 2022 while a member of the Mets. The veteran outfielder started three of the four games in Washington and has now collected seven hits in 15 at-bats since arriving from Detroit at the trade deadline.

Canha has now started just once in four games since joining the Giants after being acquired from the Tigers on Tuesday. The right-handed-hitting Canha's lone start came Friday versus Reds lefty Andrew Abbott, with the other three absences coming while the Giants have faced right-handed pitching. The Tigers traded Canha to the Giants on Tuesday in exchange for pitching prospect Eric Silva, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports.
Canha is returning to the Bay Area after spending the first seven years of his career in Oakland, but this time he's bound for the other side of the Bay. He was a good bet to be dealt before the deadline, hence his omission from the starting lineup for the Tigers in Tuesday's game versus the Guardians. In July, the 35-year-old has slashed .250/.344/.385 with one home run. Canha has started 31 games at first base, 33 in the outfield and 31 as the designated hitter this season. The Giants recently parted with Jorge Soler, who started in 92 games at DH, in a trade with Atlanta, potentially opening up a path to regular playing time for Canha.

Canha will cede his spot in the lineup to Zach McKinstry, who gets the nod at third base while Matt Vierling shifts to the outfield. After going 0-for-22 over a six-game stretch from June 25 through July 2, Canha has bounced back over the ensuing three weeks, slashing .306/.390/.500 over 11 games. As a veteran on an expiring contract, Canha could be a prime candidate to get moved elsewhere ahead of Tuesday's trade deadline while the 50-53 Tigers likely find themselves in the sellers camp.

Canha hasn't really gotten going this season, as he's batting just .236 overall, but he's riding a modest three-game hitting streak and is batting .303 in July. The veteran did miss some time earlier this month due to hip and wrist issues, but he seems healthy coming out of the All-Star break and should continue to see regular playing time for the Tigers.

Canha missed the last game before the All-Star break with a sore wrist but was able to return following the long layoff. The veteran outfielder hasn't really gotten going yet for the Tigers, as he's batting just .229 with a .688 OPS in his first season with the team. Last year, Canha batted .262 with a .755 OPS for the Brewers and Mets. He had an OPS of .700 or better in each of the previous six seasons, so he'll need a strong finish in 2024 to keep that streak alive.

Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said that Canha is "very available" for Thursday's game against the Guardians, despite the fact that he's been contending with left hip discomfort of late, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. "It's not a punishment at all, it's [how] these other guys are swinging the bat," Hinch said of Canha's status. "I think Mark's best contribution today will be off the bench."
Canha is out of the lineup Thursday for a third straight game, and while the hip issue initially looked to be at least part of the reason why he was on the bench, Hinch's comments seemed to suggest that it's more of a result of Canha's poor performance of late. Heading into Thursday's contest, Canha is hitting just .098/.203/.118 with one extra-base hit over his last 15 games, though it's unclear to what extent playing through the hip injury might have factored into his struggles. Regardless, Zach McKinstry has been the main beneficiary of Canha's slump, as the lefty-hitting McKinstry will stay in the lineup for a fifth straight game. The two could end up being deployed in a de facto platoon, making the right-handed-hitting Canha a candidate to re-enter the lineup Friday and Saturday, when the Tigers are tentatively scheduled to face Dodgers lefties Justin Wrobleski and James Paxton.

The hip issue helps explain why Canha will be out of the lineup for a third straight game Thursday against the Guardians, though the 35-year-old likely would have continued to play through the injury had he been performing better at the plate. Over his last 15 games, Canha is slashing a miserable .098/.203/.118 with one extra-base hit (a double). The injury and some bad luck may be contributing to Canha's recent struggles, as he's upheld strong walk (10.2 percent) and strikeout rates (11.9 percent) over those 15 games but has a .111 BABIP. Zach McKinstry has benefited the most from added playing time this week, but Canha could eventually settle back into a near-everyday role once the injury is fully behind him.
