R.J. Alvarez: Bound for open market
Alvarez elected free agency Sunday.
Alvarez will likely have to settle for a minor-league contract this winter as he looks to keep his career going. After appearing in 21 games out of the Oakland bullpen in his age-24 season in 2015, Alvarez waited seven years to resurface in the majors with the Mets. He saw action in just one game for New York in 2022, giving up three earned runs on four hits and three walks over 2.1 innings in relief.

Expect the journeyman reliever to get booted off the roster for a fresh arm as the Mets try to patch together their staff after two straight days in which a starter exited without completing three innings.

Alvarez (elbow) was claimed off waivers by the Cubs and optioned to Double-A Tennessee, MLB.com's Carrie Muskat reports.

The right-hander appeared in 21 games for the A's last season, but the results were not great, as he allowed 22 earned runs over 20 innings. If he can get back to full strength and make it to the majors, he would serve in middle relief for the Cubs.
