Casey Sadler: Announces retirement
Sadler announced his retirement on his personal X account Wednesday.
Sadler made his MLB debut in 2014 and spent parts of six seasons in the majors. He put together impressive campaigns in 2019 and 2021 as a traditional low-leverage reliever, though a shoulder injury ultimately derailed his career.

Mariners' Casey Sadler: Set to join Triple-A club
Sadler (shoulder) announced via his personal Twitter account that he will join Triple-A Tacoma on Tuesday for his season debut with the affiliate.
After re-signing with the Mariners on a minor-league deal in December, Sadler opened the season on Tacoma's IL while he continued his recovery from March 2022 shoulder surgery. He was cleared to begin a rehab assignment in the lower rungs of the minors following the All-Star break and now looks like he'll be activated from Tacoma's 60-day IL on Tuesday after he struck out six while allowing three earned runs in 3.1 innings over four appearances between High-A Everett and the rookie-level Arizona Complex League. Sadler is just two seasons removed from churning out a 0.67 ERA and 0.72 WHIP in 42 relief appearances with the Mariners, and if he can rediscover some semblance of his pre-injury form at Tacoma, he could be in the mix for a late-season return to the big leagues.

Mariners' Casey Sadler: Should face live hitters soon
Sadler (shoulder) is scheduled to face live hitters next week in the Arizona Complex League, the team's official site reports.
The right-hander, who last pitched in 2021 due to his shoulder issues, appears to finally be inching closer to returning to game action. Mariners general manager Justin Hollander noted Tuesday that Sadler will proceed to Triple-A Tacoma after his upcoming live batting practice session in the AZL and either initiate a rehab assignment or be activated to the Rainiers' roster at that point. If all continues without setbacks, Sadler could certainly be a candidate to pitch in the big-league bullpen again before the end of the season.

Mariners' Casey Sadler: Could be pitching by All-Star break
Mariners general manager Justin Hollander said last week that he expects Sadler (shoulder) to be ready to resume pitching in games around the All-Star break, MLB.com reports. "He's made a lot of progress since we shut him back down, so he's feeling better, and we're hopeful that he will be back and be able to avoid a second surgical procedure," Hollander said of Sadler.
Since turning in a 0.67 ERA and 0.72 WHIP over 40.1 innings with the Mariners during the 2021 season, Sadler hasn't pitched in affiliated ball while recovering from March 2022 surgery on his right shoulder. The right-hander was cleared to face hitters in spring training but appeared to suffer a setback at some point shortly thereafter, as he didn't resume a throwing program until last week. Because he'll essentially have to go through spring training all over again, Sadler is likely a few weeks away from throwing live batting practice, and more than a month away from heading out on a minor-league rehab assignment. Sadler is on a minor-league deal and is currently residing on Triple-A Tacoma's 60-day injured list.

Mariners' Casey Sadler: Resmues throwing
Sadler (shoulder) has resumed throwing, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.
Sadler was shut down for a while after spring training, but the time off appears to have helped, and the Mariners are hopeful he will avoid another procedure on the shoulder he had surgically repaired in March of 2022.

Mariners' Casey Sadler: Sent to minors camp
The Mariners reassigned Sadler (shoulder) to minor-league camp Sunday.
Sadler was one of the majors' top relievers in 2021 by producing a 0.67 ERA and 0.72 WHIP in 40.1 innings out of the Seattle bullpen, but his future in the big leagues is in flux while he works his way back from the right shoulder surgery he underwent last March. The 32-year-old has resumed mound work and could soon be ready to face hitters, but he may still be a couple weeks away from reporting to a minor-league affiliate to test himself in a game setting.

Mariners' Casey Sadler: Throws live batting practice
Sadler (shoulder) completed his first live bullpen session of the spring Friday, Shannon Drayer of Seattle Sports reports.
Sadler is working his way back from a shoulder injury that sidelined him for the entire 2022 season. The right-hander was dominant in 2021 with a miniscule 0.67 ERA over his 40.1 innings of work, and if healthy, he could be a bridge to the late-inning duo of Paul Sewald and Andres Munoz. Because of his missed time this spring, however, there's a good chance Sadler won't be ready to join the bullpen until after Opening Day.

Mariners' Casey Sadler: Back with M's on MiLB pact
Sadler (shoulder) and the Mariners agreed Wednesday on a minor-league contract, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.
Seattle non-tendered Sadler earlier this offseason, with the 32-year-old reliever choosing to elect free agency soon thereafter. He'll rejoin the Mariners on a deal that presumably includes an invitation to spring training, but it's unclear if Sadler will be ready to go by the time pitchers report to camp in February. After he was one of the majors' top setup men in 2021 with an 0.67 ERA, 0.72 WHIP and 37:10 K:BB over 40.1 innings, Sadler missed the entire 2022 campaign while recovering from the right shoulder surgery he underwent in late March. Sadler isn't a safe bet to reclaim the velocity and command he displayed pre-surgery and may not resurface as a viable MLB reliever.

Casey Sadler: Bound for open market
Sadler (shoulder) cleared waivers Wednesday and elected free agency.
After he was arguably one of MLB's top relievers in 2021 -- he turned in an 0.67 ERA and 0.72 WHIP in 40.1 innings with Seattle -- Sadler went unclaimed by baseball's other 29 teams when the Mariners exposed him to waivers earlier this week. The lack of interest is most likely due to Sadler's uncertain health, as the right-hander missed the entire 2022 campaign after undergoing shoulder surgery last March. It's unclear if Sadler will be back to full strength ahead of spring training, and whenever he gets a clean bill of health, he may need to hold a throwing showcase if he wants to land anything more than a minor-league deal in free agency.

Mariners' Casey Sadler: Transferred to 60-day IL
Sadler (shoulder) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Wednesday, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.
Sadler's placement on the 60-day IL is simply procedural, as the right-hander had already been ruled out for the season after undergoing shoulder surgery in late March. Wednesday's move helps to make room on the 40-man roster for Matt Koch, whose contract was selected from Triple-A Tacoma.

Mariners' Casey Sadler: Placed on injured list
Sadler (shoulder) was placed on the 10-day injured list Thursday.
Sadler was placed on the 10-day injured list for now, but he's likely to be shifted to the 60-day injured list eventually. He's expected to miss the entire year after undergoing shoulder surgery in late March.

Mariners' Casey Sadler: Undergoing season-ending surgery
Manager Scott Servais said Sunday that Sadler will undergo season-ending shoulder surgery, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.
Servais said earlier in the day that Sadler would be forced to miss time due to shoulder soreness, and he'll ultimately be sidelined for the entire 2022 campaign after undergoing the procedure. It's a discouraging development for Sadler, who had a strong performance in 2021 with a 0.67 ERA and 0.72 WHIP in 40.1 innings across 42 relief appearances.

Mariners' Casey Sadler: Out indefinitely
Manager Scott Servais said Sunday that Sadler is dealing with shoulder soreness and will "be down for quite some time," Jesse Borek of MLB.com reports.
Sadler missed some time with a shoulder issue last year but put together the best season of his career with a 0.67 ERA, 0.72 WHIP, 37:10 K:BB and 15 holds over 40.1 innings. It's unclear exactly how long he'll be sidelined, but the right-hander is set to open the season on the injured list.

Mariners' Casey Sadler: Secures one-year deal
Sadler agreed to a one-year, $1.025 million contract with the Mariners on Tuesday to avoid arbitration, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports.
Sadler put together a fantastic 2021 campaign and will head into 2022 with a new deal. He posted a 0.67 ERA, 0.72 WHIP and 37:10 K:BB over 40.1 innings while recording 15 holds, and he should begin next season as a key bullpen piece for Seattle.

Mariners' Casey Sadler: Approaching franchise record
Sadler, who secured his 14th hold in a win over the Athletics on Thursday, now has 24 straight scoreless appearances, just one shy of Shigetoshi Hasegawa's franchise record, the Associated Press reports.
Sadler fired two scoreless innings Thursday during which he allowed a hit and struck out two, extending his stretch of unblemished frames to 22.2. The right-hander has lowered his ERA and WHIP all the way down to 0.76 and 0.82, respectively -- elite figures, but not completely unprecedented for the 31-year-old reliever, who produced a strong 2.14 ERA and 1.17 WHIP in 2019, the only prior MLB season in which he tossed more than 19.1 innings.

Mariners' Casey Sadler: Extends scoreless appearance streak
Sadler fired a perfect sixth inning in a loss to the Diamondbacks on Sunday, recording a strikeout.
Sadler came into the frame after Anthony Misiewicz surrendered three earned runs without retiring a batter, and he proceeded to make extremely quick work of Andrew Young and Josh VanMeter on six pitches to prevent further damage. The 31-year-old has been virtually unhittable for nearly two months at this point, forging 21 consecutive scoreless appearances (18.1 innings) during which he's recorded seven holds.

Mariners' Casey Sadler: Solid since paternity list return
Sadler has fired two scoreless innings during which he's allowed a hit and a walk while recording a strikeout in his first two appearances back from the paternity list.
The right-handed reliever was called upon both Friday and Saturday and delivered a scoreless frame on each occasion. It's a matter of Sadler simply picking up where he left off before his brief absence, as he hasn't allowed an earned run since July 25, a span of 13 appearances.

Mariners' Casey Sadler: Returns to active roster
Sadler was reinstated from the paternity list Wednesday.
Sadler had been away from the team since Friday, but he'll rejoin the Mariners' bullpen ahead of Thursday's series opener against the Royals. The right-hander returned from a shoulder injury in mid-July and has posted a 0.75 ERA and 0.67 WHIP in 12 innings across 13 appearances during that time.

Mariners' Casey Sadler: Away on paternity leave
Sadler was placed on the paternity list by the Mariners on Friday.
Sadler has cruised to a 1.17 ERA in 23 innings this season, though his 19:8 K:BB doesn't back up that dominant number. He'll be away from the team for up to three days, with Yohan Ramirez recalled to take his place in the bullpen.

Mariners' Casey Sadler: Keeps racking up innings, holds
Sadler earned his sixth hold in Sunday's loss to the Rangers, firing a perfect seventh inning.
Sadler once again was the epitome of efficiency, firing 12 of 15 pitches for strikes during his one frame. The veteran right-hander has whittled his ERA and WHIP down to 1.72 and 1.15, respectively, and half of his six holds have come since his return from the injured list July 24.
