Mets' Drew Gagnon: Cast off 40-man
Gagnon was designated for assignment Wednesday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
The Mets needed to protect several players from the Rule 5 draft, and Gagnon was a roster casualty. The 29-year-old righty had a 8.37 ERA in 23.2 innings last season.

Mets' Drew Gagnon: Returns to majors
Gagnon was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse on Saturday, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.
Gagnon has struggled mightily with the big club this season, posting an 8.74 ERA and 1.72 WHIP in 17 appearances, but he's been much better at Triple-A (2.33 ERA, 1.08 WHIP). The right-hander will provide depth to the bullpen over the final three-plus weeks of the regular season.

Mets' Drew Gagnon: Back in big leagues
Gagnon was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse on Tuesday, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.
The right-hander returns to the Mets' bullpen after being optioned to Triple-A in mid-June. Since that time, Gagnon recorded an ERA of 2.70 with a 47:10 K:BB over 53.1 innings for Syracuse. His major-league numbers are less impressive, as he carries an ERA of 7.65 and a 1.65 WHIP in 15 appearances with the Mets this year, and he holds little fantasy value as a middle reliever.

Gagnon allowed eight runs in his last three innings of work, bringing his ERA up to 7.65 on the season. Daniel Zamora and Stephen Nogosek were added to the bullpen to replace Gagnon and Jeurys Familia (shoulder), who landed on the injured list.

Mets' Drew Gagnon: Could be used as closer Friday
Gagnon may be used in a save opportunity Friday with closer Edwin Diaz potentially unavailable, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
Diaz has pitched three of he last four days, so it appears as though he'll be a last-resort option for the Mets in the series opener. Gagnon has a 3.21 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 11:2 K:BB across 14 innings this season -- though all five runs allowed came in mop-up duty during his first outing of the year -- and appears to be working his way towards more high-leverage opportunities.

Mets' Drew Gagnon: Vultures another win
Gagnon (3-0) pitched a perfect eighth inning Wednesday to record the win as the Mets came back to beat the Nationals.
As per usual, the right-hander attacked the strike zone and let his defense do the rest -- he threw seven pitches, all strikes, to retire Howie Kendrick, Trea Turner and Adam Eaton without giving up any hard contact. All three of Gagnon's victories have come during a seven-appearance scoreless streak, during which he's compiled a 6:1 K:BB in 8.2 innings and lowered his ERA on the year to 3.21. He'll likely stay in a fairly low-leverage role, but if the Mets keep making a habit of rallying late, wins could keep falling into Gagnon's lap.

Mets' Drew Gagnon: Grabs second win
Gagnon (2-0) picked up the win in Monday's victory over the Nationals, walking one and striking out two over two scoreless innings of relief.
Entering the game in the fifth inning with the Mets up 4-2, Gagnon attacked the strike zone, throwing 23 of 32 pitches for strikes. The 28-year-old right-hander hasn't allowed a run in 7.2 innings over six appearances since returning to the majors in late April, posting a 6:1 K:BB over that stretch, and while he's not seeing particularly high-leverage usage, the team's struggle to find an effective fifth starter should continue to afford Gagnon regular work in long relief.

Mets' Drew Gagnon: Not getting start
Updating a previous report, Gagnon won't make a spot start Monday against the Nationals, according to Mike Puma of the New York Post.
Word surfaced earlier in the day that Gagnon was likely to join the rotation temporarily as a fifth starter, but manager Mickey Callaway apparently had a change of heart. Instead, Wilmer Font will make his third start with the Mets while Gagnon presumably remains on hand in a long-relief role.

Mets' Drew Gagnon: Confirmed as Monday's starter
Gagnon will pick up a start Monday against the Nationals, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
Gagnon will step in as a replacement in the rotation for Wilmer Font, but both pitchers will likely find themselves in the bullpen in short order with Jason Vargas (hamstring) expected to return from the 10-day injured list later in the week. While Gagnon made three starts at Triple-A Syracuse earlier this season, he hasn't thrown more than 26 pitches in any outing since April 23 and is thus expected to face an unspecified restriction Monday.

Mets' Drew Gagnon: Could make spot start Monday
Gagnon is being considered for a spot start Monday against the Nationals, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
Gagnon made one start for the Mets in 2018 but has otherwise been deployed as a reliever in his other 10 outings at the big-league level. Considering that his last start at Triple-A Syracuse came on April 23 along with the fact that he's pitched no more than 2.2 innings since that time, it's likely he would have a restricted pitch count in place if he gets the nod Monday. If Gagnon doesn't draw the spot start, the Mets would likely hand another turn to Wilmer Font, who has given up seven runs in 6.1 innings over his first two appearances with New York.

Mets' Drew Gagnon: Sent to minors
The Mets optioned Gagnon to Triple-A Syracuse on Wednesday, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.
After starter Steven Matz failed to retire any of the eight batters he faced in Tuesday's 14-3 loss to the Phillies, Gagnon had the thankless task of mopping up for the Mets in a game that was decided after one inning. Gagnon ended up saving the Mets' bullpen by covering 5.1 frames, though he served up six runs (five earned) along the way. Since Gagnon tossed 97 pitches in the outing and was unlikely to be available for at least four more days, the Mets decided to swap him out for a fresh bullpen arm in Jacob Rhame, who was recalled from Triple-A in a corresponding move.

Mets' Drew Gagnon: Summoned from minors
Gagnon was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse on Monday.
Gagnon will provide a fresh bullpen arm for the Mets after the team used up six relievers in the past two games. The 28-year-old made his big-league debut last season, compiling a 5.25 ERA and 8:5 K:BB in 12 innings. Luis Guillorme was sent to the minors in a corresponding move.

Mets' Drew Gagnon: Shifts to minors camp
The Mets optioned Gagnon to their minor-league camp Tuesday, Deesha Thosar of the New York Daily News reports.
Gagnon wasn't in serious contention for an Opening Day long-relief role after he was lit up for seven earned runs on 15 hits and five walks over 12 innings between his two stints in the big leagues last season. He'll likely open 2019 as a member of the rotation at Triple-A Syracuse.

Mets' Drew Gagnon: Promoted to majors
Gagnon was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas on Monday.
Gagnon has spent most of his time in the minors this season, posting a 4.57 ERA and 167:43 K:BB across 157.2 innings (27 starts) with the 51s. He made a spot start for the Mets in July, which also marked his big-league debut, though he allowed six runs across 4.2 innings and took the loss. The 28-year-old will get a chance to improve upon his body of work in the majors down the stretch, though it's unclear if he'll get another chance to start or if he'll be used in a long-relief role.

Gagnon was optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas on Wednesday.
As expected, Gagnon was sent back down to the minors after starting Tuesday's game against the Phillies. During his spot start, he allowed six earned runs across 4.2 innings while taking the loss. Across 18 starts at the Triple-A level this year, he's posted a 4.46 ERA and 1.23 WHIP.

Mets' Drew Gagnon: Takes loss in big-league debut
Gagnon (0-1) gave up six earned runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out three in 4.2 innings Tuesday against the Phillies. He took the loss.
While he may not look at it this way, it was an achievement for the 28-year-old Gagnon just to reach the majors to make this start after spending parts of eight seasons in the minors with three different organizations. Noah Syndergaard (finger) is expected to join the rotation this weekend, so it's possible Gagnon will be optioned back to Triple-A on Wednesday.
