Mariners' Sam Travis: Inks minor-league deal
Travis signed a minor-league contract with the Mariners on Thursday.
Travis was let go by the Rangers in early September, but he'll land in Seattle on a minor-league deal. The Mariners haven't announced whether he'll receive an invitation to major-league spring training, although it wouldn't be surprising if he did. The 27-year-old spent time in the big leagues with the Red Sox from 2017 until 2019, hitting .230 with seven home runs and 24 RBI over 111 games.

Rangers' Sam Travis: Knocks in two
Travis went 1-for-2 with a two-run single in Sunday's spring game against the Dodgers.
Travis made his spring debut, serving as the designated hitter after dealing with a hamstring injury since the start of spring training. He's a potential right-handed complement at first base, although the Rangers may need that spot to give at-bats to Danny Santana, Nick Solak or Todd Frazier. Travis, who also played left field while with the Red Sox, batted .215/.274/.382 in 59 games for Boston in 2019.

Rangers' Sam Travis: Returns Sunday at DH
Travis (hamstring) is batting eighth as the designated hitter in Sunday's Cactus League game against the Dodgers.
Travis entered spring training with the hamstring issue, so his first game action is a big step as he attempts to compete for the starting job at first base. The 26-year-old is coming off a rough season in Boston with a .215/.274/.382 slash line in 157 plate appearances.

Rangers' Sam Travis: Could play this weekend
Travis (hamstring) has been running the bases and could appear in a spring training game this coming weekend, Sam Blum of the Dallas Morning Star reports.
Travis was hobbled by an offseason injury that's prevented him from playing thus far during spring games. The longer he's sidelined, the less likely it is for Travis to push for the open first base job. Ronald Guzman and Greg Bird have manned the position in the first few games.

Rangers' Sam Travis: Receives invite
Travis has been extended an invitation to spring training, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports.
The invite was expected after the Rangers acquired Travis from the Red Sox last week. He plays both first base and outfield with Texas looking at him primarily as a first baseman. The right-handed hitting Travis, who is not on the 40-man roster, will be given an opportunity to compete for that job during the spring and could work his way into a platoon with Ronald Guzman.

Rangers' Sam Travis: Will compete at first base
Travis will be given a shot to compete at first base during spring training, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports.
The right-handed hitting Travis, who was acquired from the Red Sox on Wednesday, is not on the Rangers' 40-man roster but will get an opportunity to platoon with Ronald Guzman for playing time at first base. That position is unsettled for now, and the club is looking at available free agents. That includes Nick Castellanos, who the Rangers are feeling out about his willingness to try his hand at first base.

Rangers' Sam Travis: Traded to Rangers
Travis was traded from the Red Sox to the Rangers on Wednesday in exchange for left-hander Jeffrey Springs, John Blake of the team's official site reports.
The 26-year-old accepted an outright assignment to Triple-A Pawtucket last Thursday, but he'll now work out of the Rangers' organization. Travis was assigned to Triple-A Nashville in a corresponding move after hitting .275/.362/.432 with seven home runs and five stolen bases over 68 games in the minors last season. Red Sox's Sam Travis: Accepts outright assignment
Travis cleared waivers Thursday and accepted an outright assignment to Triple-A Pawtucket, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
After struggling at the plate last season, Travis was designated for assignment earlier in January to clear room on the 40-man roster for Kevin Plawecki. However, Travis went unclaimed on waivers and will accept his assignment to Triple-A Pawtucket. Over 68 games at the Triple-A level last year, the 26-year-old hit .275/.362/.432 with seven home runs and 33 RBI.

Red Sox's Sam Travis: DFA'd by Red Sox
Travis was designated for assignment by the Red Sox on Thursday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
Travis appeared in a career-high 59 major-league games last season, but he struggled with a .215 batting average and only six home runs. The 26-year-old has a below-average strikeout rate of 22.9 percent but hasn't been able to display enough power in the big leagues to justify that rate. Travis was removed from the 40-man roster in order to clear room for Kevin Plawecki, who signed a major-league contract with the team Thursday.

Red Sox's Sam Travis: Goes 1-for-5 in lineup return
Travis (concussion) started in left field and went 1-for-5 in Sunday's 7-4 win over the Rays.
Travis had been withheld from action for the past few days with a concussion, but he was cleared to re-enter the lineup before the weekend concluded after passing through the MLB's protocol for head injuries. With all of Andrew Benintendi (thumb), J.D. Martinez (groin) and Mookie Betts (foot) nursing injuries lately, Travis could be in store for a decent amount of run in the Boston outfield in the final week of the season.

Red Sox's Sam Travis: Enters concussion protocol
Manager Alex Cora said after Tuesday's 7-6 loss to the Giants that Travis (concussion) has been placed in the MLB's concussion protocol, Bill Koch of The Providence Journal reports.
Travis entered the contest in the bottom of the sixth inning as a pinch hitter for designated hitter J.D. Martinez, whose night ended early due to left groin tightness. While running to third base to secure his first MLB triple, Travis' helmet flew off and he was struck in the head by the throw from the outfield. The Red Sox immediately pulled Travis from the contest, and he'll now have to clear all steps of the protocol before gaining clearance to play again. Travis looks unlikely to be available for Wednesday's contest.

Red Sox's Sam Travis: Exits with head injury
Travis left Tuesday's game against the Giants with a head injury, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.

Red Sox's Sam Travis: Starting in left field Sunday
Travis is starting in left field Sunday against Phillies left-hander Jason Vargas, Jason Mastrodonato of the Boston Herald reports.
The Red Sox are deploying a unique cast in the outfield with Travis, Andrew Benintendi and J.D. Martinez from left to right. Mookie Betts (foot) is sidelined while Jackie Bradley has not started against left-handers of late. That set of circumstances has Travis in left while left-handed-hitting first baseman Mitch Moreland gets a rare start against a southpaw. Travis is hitless in his last 17 at-bats, having last knocked a base hit Aug. 25.

Red Sox's Sam Travis: Playing against lefties
Travis started at first base and went 0-for-2 with a walk in Thursday's 2-1 loss to the Twins.
With the Red Sox set to face left-hander Martin Perez, Mitch Moreland stepped aside for Travis. The news that Michael Chavis (oblique) could be shut down for the season means Travis will slot in at first base against left-handers from here on out. The 26-year-old first baseman has just one hit over his last 18 at-bats (.055).
