Bird struck out one over two-thirds of an inning to pick up the save in Wednesday's 5-2 win over the Diamondbacks.
This wasn't a save situation when the Rangers went into the bottom of the ninth inning up by four runs, but the left-handed Bird was given this surprise save chance after closer Jose Leclerc allowed a run and hit two batters. This was supposed to be a stress-free appearance for Leclerc, who blew a save Tuesday, which has caught the attention of manager Chris Woodward. Bird is not considered the next likely closer should Leclerc need time to figure out his issues, but the situation bears watching.

Rangers' Kyle Bird: Back in big leagues
Bird was recalled from Triple-A Nashville on Friday, Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.
With Edinson Volquez (elbow) headed to the 10-day injured list, Bird will rejoin the Rangers after being optioned Monday. Volquez was scheduled to pitch Wednesday in Arizona, but with Bird being used primarily as a reliever, it remains to be seen who Texas will choose to start until Volquez returns. Texas may elect to go with a four-man rotation until absolutely necessary, though Adrian Sampson could be a candidate to make a spot start or two, per T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com.

He'll make the big club as an eighth reliever and is expected to see most of his usage as a mop-up man or occasional matchups play against left-handed hitters. Rangers' Kyle Bird: Dealt to Texas
Tampa Bay traded Bird to Texas on Friday in a three-team deal, Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports reports.
Jurickson Profar was dealt to Oakland, while Bird, Brock Burke, Yoel Espinal, Eli White and international bonus money go to Texas, and Emilio Pagan, Rollie Lacy and the 38th pick in the 2019 draft go to Tampa Bay. Bird spent a majority of the 2018 campaign at Triple-A Durham before being added to the Rays' 40-man roster in order to protect him from the Rule 5 draft. Across 27 appearances (five starts) at the top level of the minors, he logged a phenomenal 1.94 ERA and 1.16 WHIP with 65 strikeouts in 55.2 innings. He will likely begin next season with Triple-A Round Rock but could earn his first big-league promotion if he's able to continue finding success.
