Angels' Willie Calhoun: Designated for assignment
The Angels designated Calhoun for assignment Thursday, Alden Gonzalez of ESPN.com reports.
Calhoun has been the Angels' primary designated hitter and cleanup man against right-handed pitching since he was added to the roster back in early May. However, after slashing just .245/.315/.380 over 254 plate appearances, the Halos have decided to remove him from the 26-man and 40-man rosters. Calhoun seems likely to clear waivers. Manager Ron Washington could opt to filter through multiple players at DH down the stretch.

Angels' Willie Calhoun: Clubs late homer
Calhoun went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 6-1 loss to the Blue Jays.
Calhoun's ninth-inning blast prevented the Angels from getting shut out. The 29-year-old's playing time has been down lately due to a stretch heavy with left-handed starters for the Angels' opponents. It looks like Calhoun is in a strict platoon role at this point of the season. Overall, he has a .248/.316/.385 slash line, five homers, 20 RBI, 26 runs scored, 16 doubles and no stolen bases over 67 contests.

Angels' Willie Calhoun: On bench against lefty again
Calhoun is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Nationals, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.
With southpaw MacKenzie Gore taking the hill for the Nationals, the lefty-hitting Calhoun will remain on the bench for the series finale. Calhoun has now been held out of the lineup in five straight contests, with the Angels facing off against left-handed staters in the last four of those games. The Angels will begin a three-game series Monday against a Toronto squad that features an all-right-handed rotation, so Calhoun should regain a regular spot in the lineup during the upcoming week.

Angels' Willie Calhoun: Idle against lefty
Calhoun is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Mets.

Angels' Willie Calhoun: Playing time trending down
Calhoun will start at designated hitter and bat cleanup in Sunday's game against the Mariners.
Calhoun is back in the lineup for the Angels' final game before the All-Star break, but he had started just once in the Halos' previous six matchups against right-handed starting pitchers. The recent return of Anthony Rendon from the injured list appears to have spelled an end to Calhoun's time as a strong-side platoon player for the Angels, even after he starred in Friday's 6-5 win with two home runs and four RBI.

Angels' Willie Calhoun: Pops two homers including walk-off
Calhoun went 2-for-5 with a pair of two-run homers in Friday's 6-5 win against the Mariners.
Calhoun made the most of his first start since July 7, notching his third career two-homer game, with the other two coming way back in 2019. The Angels' designated hitter collected his first homer with a two-run shot off Bryan Woo in the first inning to tie the game at 2-2. Calhoun then walked off the Mariners with a 409-foot, two-run blast off Austin Voth in the 10th inning. Perhaps this performance will garner the 29-year-old some additional starts, as he's now slashing .273/.344/.419 across 192 plate appearances this season.

Angels' Willie Calhoun: Sitting in fourth straight
Calhoun is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Giants, Erica Weston of Bally Sports West reports.
Calhoun has been displaced as the Angels' designated hitter in four straight games while Taylor Ward has handled those duties since returning from a one-game absence due to a back injury. It's unclear if Calhoun will recapture a regular role when or if Ward moves back to his previous spot in left field. Dating back to May 22, Calhoun has produced a modest .564 OPS, which may have put him at risk of losing his job even if Ward's back injury hadn't cropped up.
