One of two prospects the Red Sox acquired in the August 2020 deal that sent Mitch Moreland to San Diego, Potts didn't develop as hoped upon joining Boston's organization. The headliner in the trade that sent Mitch Moreland to San Diego, Potts could have really used a traditional minor-league season to work on his approach against upper-level pitchers after struggling at Double-A in 2019 (93 wRC+, 28.6 percent strikeout rate). Even so, he just turned 22, so he wouldn't even be old for the level if he were sent back to Double-A at the start of the 2021 season. He still possesses plus right-handed pop and has a chance to handle third base.
Potts and Jeisson Rosario were traded from the Padres to the Red Sox on Sunday in exchange for Mitch Moreland, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports.
Potts was included in the Padres' 60-player pool, allowing him to be traded ahead of Monday's deadline. The 21-year-old was one of San Diego's top prospects and spent most of 2019 at the Double-A level, posting a .227/.290/.406 slash line, 16 homers and 128 strikeouts in 409 at-bats.

He was placed on the injured list June 2 and has not played since May 31. The injury isn't ideal, but Potts' performance this year is the more concerning issue. He was hitting .209/.286/.347 with five home runs and a 33.2 percent strikeout rate in 50 games prior to the injury. Potts now has 105 strikeouts, 28 walks and seven home runs in 72 career games at the Double-A level. On the bright side, he is the youngest qualified hitter in the Texas League (20 years old), so he could repeat the level next year and still be quite young for the league.

Potts went 9-for-16 with three home runs, five runs, eight RBI, three walks and two strikeouts across four games in Lancaster over the weekend.
Lancaster is perhaps the most hitter-friendly park in the minors, but this still qualifies as a monster series for the 19-year-old third baseman. He upped his season average from .262 to .276 in those four games alone and is tied for second in the California League with 16 home runs. Potts is also the second-youngest qualified hitter in the league. He profiles nicely as a power-hitting third baseman who could hit fifth or sixth in a good big-league lineup someday.
