Athletics' Ryan Castellani: Gets first hold
Castellani recorded his first hold in a win over the Orioles on Tuesday, firing 1.2 perfect innings.
Castellani didn't record any strikeouts, but otherwise, there's nothing to quibble with regarding his second appearance in the last three days. The right-hander, whose contract was selected from Triple-A Las Vegas on Friday, should continue to serve in a low-leverage middle-relief role while with the big-league club.

Ryan Castellani: Gets chance with A's
Castellani signed a minor-league contract with the Athletics earlier this month, Chris Hilburn-Trenkle of Baseball America reports.
Castellani was quickly able to find a new organization after he elected free agency Nov. 7, ending his time with the Rockies. A 2014 second-round pick of Colorado, Castellani reached the majors for the first time in 2020 and made one spot start for the big club this past season, working 3.1 innings and giving up two earned runs on five hits and four walks. His deal with the Athletics presumably includes an invitation to spring training, but the 25-year-old right-hander is most likely ticketed for the Triple-A Las Vegas rotation.

Rockies' Ryan Castellani: Stays in organization
The Rockies outrighted Castellani to Triple-A Albuquerque on Wednesday.
Castellani will remain a member of the Colorado organization after none of baseball's other 29 teams elected to put in a waiver claim for the 25-year-old right-hander when he was designated for assignment last week. He'll likely slot into the Albuquerque rotation, but his lack of a 40-man roster spot will hamper Castellani's chances of receiving another call-up to the big club.

Rockies' Ryan Castellani: No-decision Tuesday
Castellani did not factor into the decision after surrendering two runs on five hits and four walks while striking out two across 3.1 innings in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Giants.
All of Castellani's damage came on a two-run homer by Brandon Belt in the first inning. Otherwise, it was a short outing for the 25-year-old, who was recalled from Colorado's alternate training site ahead of Tuesday's twin bill as the team's 27th player. Castellani is expected to report back to Triple-A Albuquerque following the doubleheader.

Rockies' Ryan Castellani: Getting spot start Tuesday
Manager Bud Black said that Castellani will be called up from Triple-A Albuquerque to start the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader with the Giants, Jenny Cavnar of AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain reports.
German Marquez is thus in line to start the first game of the day after he had his scheduled start Monday postponed due to inclement weather in Colorado. Castellani will likely be designated as the Rockies' 27th man for the twin bill, so he'll presumably head back to Albuquerque following the spot start. The 25-year-old right-hander made 10 appearances (nine starts) for Colorado as a rookie in 2020, posting a 5.82 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 25:26 K:BB in 43.1 innings.

Rockies' Ryan Castellani: Struggles in spring debut
Castellani allowed seven runs (four earned) on two hits and two walks while failing to strike out any batters over two innings in Wednesday's Cactus League win over the Athletics. He didn't factor into the decision.
Castellani gave up three earned runs in the first inning, while multiple errors in the second frame resulted in several more runs for Oakland. However, the right-hander picked up a no-decision after the Rockies mounted a 10-run rally across the final four innings. Castellani admitted that his struggles stemmed from rushed mechanics during his brief outing, but he said that he wants to work on making adjustments sooner to prevent similar results during the regular season. The 24-year-old made his major-league debut in 2020 and is competing with southpaw Austin Gomber for the fifth spot in the starting rotation. Gomber was impressive during Sunday's spring opener, and the team could choose to develop Castellani more to begin the season if his struggles during Cactus League play continue.

Rockies' Ryan Castellani: Command struggles continue
Castellani (1-4) took the loss against the Giants on Wednesday, surrendering four runs on five hits and five walks while striking out one across 4.2 innings.
Castellani blanked the Giants until the fourth inning, when he served up a solo home run to Evan Longoria to even the score, 1-1. The right-hander unraveled from there, working himself into a mess of a fifth inning that included a double by Alex Dickerson and a pair of walks. All of Castellani's baserunners would eventually score after he left the game, charging him with the loss. The 24-year-old struggled with his command once again. He has now issued 18 walks across 19 innings in his last four starts and finishes the regular season with a 5.82 ERA and 1.45 WHIP.

He will take a 4.46 ERA into his start against the Dodgers on Friday.

Rockies' Ryan Castellani: Gives up four runs in no-decision
Castellani pitched 4.1 innings, allowing four runs on six hits and four walks and striking out one in a no-decision against the Dodgers on Sunday.
The original plan was for Castellani to work more as an opener with Chi Chi Gonzalez working in a piggyback role. Instead, Castellani threw 87 pitches (49 strikes) in a fairly erratic start and Gonzalez didn't make an appearance. Luckily for Castellani, the back-and-forth contest allowed him to avoid a loss. He now has a 5.34 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 19 strikeouts across 28.2 innings. If the right-hander gets another turn in the rotation, it would likely come at home versus the Angels on Saturday.

Rockies' Ryan Castellani: In line for piggyback start
Castellani is scheduled to start Sunday's game against the Dodgers, but Chi Chi Gonzalez is expected to piggyback him in the outing, Nick Groke of The Athletic reports.
Castellani opened his big-league career by giving up one run over 8.2 innings in his first two starts, but regression has reared its head since then, with the right-hander surrendering 12 runs over his subsequent three starts. The Rockies may have discovered a better role for Castellani on Wednesday, when he came on in relief of Kyle Freeland to fire two shutout innings in Colorado's 9-6 win over the Giants. While Castellani will stay on turn to start this weekend in Los Angeles, the Rockies will be conservative with his workload since he'll be pitching on three days' rest following his 26-pitch relief outing. Gonzalez also tossed two innings (46 pitches) in relief Wednesday, so neither he nor Castellani will probably be in line for a true "bulk innings" role.

Castellani struggled right out of the gate, allowing a three-run homer with just one out in the first inning. He then allowed a pair of runs in the second before the bullpen took over. The 24-year-old's season ERA shot up to 5.24 as a result of the rough outing. Castellani will next face the Dodgers on the road Saturday.
