Merandy Gonzalez: Parts ways with Nationals
The Nationals released Gonzalez on Monday, Brittany Ghiroli of The Athletic reports.
Gonzalez joined the Nationals on a minor-league deal in January and was set to begin the campaign at Double-A Harrisburg before the COVID-19 pandemic put the 2020 minor-league season in jeopardy. The 24-year-old right-hander previously made eight appearances (one start) for the Marlins in 2018, but he didn't pitch above the Double-A level at any point in 2019.

Giants' Merandy Gonzalez: Claimed, optioned to Double-A
Gonzalez was claimed off waivers by the Cardinals and then optioned to Double-A Springfield.
The Cardinals presumably want to try to continue developing Gonzalez as a starting pitcher at Double-A. He had been used primarily as a reliever by the Marlins last year, but had been a starter prior to that, although his strikeout rate has been awful above Low-A. Brett Cecil was transferred to the 60-day IL in a corresponding move.

He started the second half of the twin bill and took the loss, giving up three runs on eight hits and no walks over 4.2 innings. Since the Marlins only needed him to make a spot start, he'll head back to the minors and presumably slot into the New Orleans rotation.

The Marlins selected Gonzalez's contract from Double-A Jacksonville ahead of his scheduled start for the second game of Monday's doubleheader with the Braves.

Gonzalez owns an unremarkable 4.32 ERA and 1.38 WHIP over 73 innings at Jacksonville this season, but he has been sharp over his past three Southern League outings. The 22-year-old has covered exactly seven innings while allowing only one run in each of those starts.
