Teng (1-2) took the loss Tuesday as the Astros fell 5-3 to the Orioles, giving up two runs on five hits over three innings. He struck out two.
Kicking off a bullpen day for Houston, Teng lasted a season-high 42 pitches (30 strikes) before being lifted, with Ryan Weiss piggybacking him for another 3.2 frames. Teng has provided useful innings so far on a patchwork staff, posting a 2.75 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 18:6 K:BB over 19.2 innings in 12 appearances (one start), but his current role doesn't carry a lot of fantasy utility -- the 27-year-old right-hander has one win and one hold in that span. If the Teng/Weiss tandem takes another turn in the rotation, it lines up to come on the road this weekend in Boston. If the Astros look to Triple-A Sugar Land instead for a starter, Miguel Ullola would be on turn and threw 5.1 innings Tuesday, albeit with a 5:4 K:BB.

Teng has recorded more than three outs in seven of 11 relief outings this season, so he could cover more than one inning Tuesday. However, he's not stretched out enough to make a typical start, so Houston will be treating Tuesday's contest as a bullpen day. Ryan Weiss is a candidate to cover multiple innings in relief once Teng exits the game.

Tuesday had been Ryan Weiss' turn in the rotation, but Weiss appears headed back to the bullpen. Teng has pitched well as a multi-inning reliever this season, collecting a 2.16 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and 16:6 K:BB across 16.2 frames. The right-hander made seven starts last season for the Giants and was deployed mostly as a starting pitcher in the minors, so he shouldn't require a lengthy period of time to get fully stretched out. However, with Tatsuya Imai (arm) poised to return from the injured list, Teng's stint in the rotation could be brief.

Astros general manager Dana Brown said Wednesday in an interview on SportsTalk 790 that the teams has had internal conversations about stretching Teng back out to be used as a starting pitcher.
Teng has been terrific as a multi-inning reliever for the Astros, posting a 1.65 ERA, 0.80 WHIP and 16:6 K:BB over 16.1 innings. The 27-year-old has plenty of past starting experience, though his control problems (12.2 percent walk rate in the majors, 11.5 percent walk rate in the minors) suggest he might be best off remaining in the bullpen.

Per Rome, Houston has been impressed by Teng's ability to record swinging strikes "with multiple breaking balls". The right-hander was traded to the Astros in late January after posting a 6.37 ERA across 29.2 innings with San Francisco last year. Teng's ability to provide multiple innings out of the bullpen is certainly viewed as an asset, as Houston plans to open the season with a six-man rotation. Their middle relief depth has already been tested, as Enyel De Los Santos (knee) has yet to resume throwing, opening the door for Teng to claim a roster spot.

Teng was traded from the Giants to the Astros in exchange for a minor-league player on Thursday, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports.
Teng has experience as both a reliever and starter in the majors, and he worked primarily out of the Giants' rotation toward the end of the 2025 season. He still has two minor-league options remaining, so there's a strong chance Teng begins the season with Triple-A Sugar Land. However, he should contribute to the big-league club at some point in 2026.

The Giants look to be limiting Teng's workload -- he's reached the five-inning mark in just two of his eight major-league appearances this season. Teng gave up a run in the first inning but generally allowed the Giants to keep things close before the bullpen had a rough night. This was Teng's first appearance in over a week after he allowed four runs on three hits and five walks versus the Cardinals on Sept. 7. The right-hander is now at a 6.41 ERA, 1.61 WHIP and 33:15 K:BB through 26.2 innings over seven appearances (six starts) in the majors this season. The Giants' rotation has been in flux recently, but Teng would next be available to pitch on normal rest in the back half of this weekend's four-game road series versus the Dodgers.

Teng and Sonny Gray were locked in a pitchers' duel Sunday, with the former keeping the Cardinals off the board through the first four frames. Things fell apart in the fifth for Teng, who issued three straight walks before yielding an RBI single and being pulled from the inning, but not before being tagged for three more runs. Teng was able to generate 14 whiffs on 77 pitches (41 strikes) and has registered eight strikeouts in back-to-back starts, but his five walks were a season high. The Giants currently have a six-man rotation, but it's unclear whether Teng will get another turn or head back to Triple-A Sacramento.

Teng struggled with an 8.78 ERA over four starts in August prior to a brief minor-league demotion, but he looked like a different pitcher Monday. Not only did the right-hander limit the Rockies to two runs, he also fanned eight batters, doubling his previous season-best mark. Teng did allow traffic in all but one of his frames, but the Rockies didn't score on him until after he gave way for a reliever with one out in the sixth. Teng figures to get another turn in the rotation given this strong outing, and he lines up to face the Cardinals in St. Louis this weekend.
The Giants recalled Teng from Triple-A Sacramento on Sunday, and he's expected to start Monday's game against the Rockies in Colorado, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
The right-hander has struggled to an 8.78 ERA across 13.1 frames in the majors this season, but he'll receive another opportunity with the Giants after starter Carson Whisenhunt (back) was placed on the injured list Sunday. Teng's last two outings have been against San Diego, and he's allowed a total of 10 runs (eight earned) over five innings against the Giants' division rivals. Teng has maintained the last spot in San Francisco's rotation this month, staying in the majors over Carson Whisenhunt when Landen Roupp returned from an elbow injury. That said, Teng's 8.78 ERA and 12:9 K:BB through 13.1 innings over four appearances haven't inspired much confidence in his major-league readiness. If he gets another start, it's projected to be another challenging matchup this weekend in Milwaukee.
