  Boyle will rejoin the Rays to start the second game of the season Saturday against the Cardinals, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. The right-hander was competing for a roster spot before being sent to minor-league camp last week, but he'll end up starting the second game of the year with Ryan Pepiot (hip) headed to the IL and Nick Martinez (knee) banged up. Boyle started in nine of his 13 appearances for Tampa Bay last season and had a 4.67 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 58:28 K:BB across 52 innings.

  Boyle allowed one run on four hits and four walks while striking out nine over 4.1 innings in a no-decision versus the Red Sox on Sunday. Boyle pitched fairly well, but the four walks got his pitch count up early. He exited at 93 pitches (62 strikes), and the Rays' bullpen was able to keep the lead the rest of the way. Boyle has had mixed results this year, but he's now at a 4.40 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 53:25 K:BB through 47 innings over 12 appearances (eight starts). He's allowed just one run over 10.1 innings in his two outings since returning to the big-league roster after a rough August. Boyle should get one more start this season, which is expected to be on the road in Toronto.

After officially being eliminated from playoff contention Friday, the Rays appear set to finish out the season with a six-man rotation that includes Boyle. The Rays recalled the right-hander from Triple-A Durham on Monday, and he fared well in his start against the Blue Jays later that day, taking a no-decision while striking out five over six shutout innings. Boyle was recalled from Triple-A Durham for this start and posted arguably the best performance of his three-year career against the division-leading Blue Jays. The right-handed flamethrower generated a respectable 11 whiffs out of his 78 total pitches to notch his first quality start of the season. Across 42.2 total frames, Boyle now sports a 4.64 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 44:21 K:BB. If he remains in the rotation, his next start would line up to either come against Boston at home this weekend or on the road at Baltimore early next week.

The right-hander has dominated at Durham this season (1.73 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 96:31 K:BB in 73 innings) and shown flashes at the major-league level, but Boyle is still looking for more consistency.

The one bright spot was that he kept the ball in the yard for just the second time in his last six outings. After Tampa Bay optioned right-hander Taj Bradley to Triple-A Durham last week, Boyle stepped into the open spot in the rotation and made his second start of the season for the big club in Tuesday's loss to the Yankees. Despite being roughed up from six runs (four earned) on four hits and three walks over 3.1 frames, Boyle still owns sparkling ratios (2.82 ERA, 0.85 WHIP, 24:9 K:BB in 22.1 innings) at the big-league level this season and appears to have gained some security in the Tampa Bay rotation in the aftermath of Thursday's trade deadline. The Rays acquired right-hander Adrian Houser but shipped out two other starters in Bradley (Twins) and righty Zack Littell (Reds).

Boyle faced minimal trouble through the first two frames and showcased his high strikeout upside by striking out the side in the second. Things fell apart from there, however, as Boyle went on to give up six runs while only getting four more outs. Boyle's shaky command resurfaced with three walks, but he'd shown an improved ability to find the strike zone coming into Tuesday with just six walks in 19 innings. He'll look to rebound at home over the weekend when the Dodgers come to town.

  Rays president of baseball operations Erik Neander said Thursday that Boyle will open the second half in a multi-inning relief role, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Boyle served in a piggyback role with Drew Rasmussen in his two appearances with the big club this month, throwing a total of nine innings while yielding three runs (two earned) with an 8:3 K:BB. However, Rasmussen is set to resume a normal starter workload after the break, and Neander mentioned Thursday that Boyle would be used for 2-to-3 innings at a time moving forward. It severely limits Boyle's fantasy outlook, should he remain in that role. However, there remains a good chance the righty will eventually find his way into the Rays' rotation, whether it be due to injury or trade of another starter. Boyle boasts a 1.29 ERA and 15:5 K:BB over 14 major-league innings in 2025 and has collected a 1.85 ERA and 96:31 K:BB across 73 frames at Triple-A Durham.

• Rays' Joe Boyle: Works behind Rasmussen on Friday

  Boyle struck out one batter and allowed two earned runs on three hits and two walks over four innings out of the bullpen in Friday's 5-4 loss to the Red Sox. Boyle was once again used in tandem with Drew Rasmussen, who covered the first two innings. The Rays have made it clear that they intend to limit Rasmussen to around 150 innings this season since he's just two years removed from undergoing the third major elbow operation of his career, and Boyle is expected to piggyback him for at least a few more turns through the rotation. While his results Friday were unremarkable, Boyle has delivered excellent ratios overall between his stops in the majors and at Durham this season, and he'll have improved odds of earning wins while the Rays deploy him in bulk relief. Tampa Bay is listing Rasmussen as its starter for its fifth game of the second half July 22 versus the White Sox, so Boyle's next appearance will presumably come that same day.

  Rays manager Kevin Cash suggested after Sunday's 7-5 extra-inning win over the Twins that he intends to have Boyle piggyback Drew Rasmussen for at least a few more turns through the rotation, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Though Rasmussen has moved back into a full-time starting role in 2025 after undergoing the third major elbow surgery of his career in July 2023, the Rays are aiming to limit him to around 150 innings this season. Just over halfway into the campaign, Rasmussen has already compiled 89.1 innings, so the Rays will stick to their plan of managing his workload so that he can be available in some capacity through the rest of the regular season and potentially into the playoffs. The Rays took the first step in curtailing Rasmussen's workload Sunday, when Boyle was called up from Triple-A Durham to pitch in bulk relief behind him. After Rasmussen covered the first two frames, Boyle stepped in and covered the next five innings, striking out seven batters while allowing an unearned run on two hits and one walk. Cash didn't go into specifics regarding how long past the All-Star break the Rasmussen/Boyle pairing might be used or whether Rasmussen would continue to be capped at around two innings, but for fantasy purposes, the arrangement is certainly more favorable to Boyle than Rasmussen. By continuing to work in bulk relief on the days he pitches, Boyle will be the Rays hurler most likely to factor into any decision. In addition to the increased win potential, Boyle looks like he could make a major impact for fantasy managers in the ratio categories. He's submitted a 1.85 ERA and 22.3 K-BB% over 73 innings at Durham this season, and he's maintained that dominance through his two appearances with the Rays thus far, turning in a 0.00 ERA, 0.50 WHIP and 14:3 K:BB through 10 frames.

Even though Boyle's role is somewhat in flux at the moment, the dominance he's displayed in the minors and in his two appearances (one start) in the big leagues (0.00 ERA, 0.50 WHIP, 14 strikeouts in 10 innings) makes him worthy of picking up in most leagues where he's available.
