Painter (3-9) took the loss Tuesday as the Phillies fell 6-5 to the Astros, coughing up five runs on 10 hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out six.
Four of the hits off the 23-year-old righty went for extra bases, including homers by Christian Walker in the second inning and Cam Smith in the fourth. The outing snapped Painter's quality start streak at three, and while he's still prone to rough nights, his overall results have been improving. Since the beginning of August, he's kept the ball in the yard in five of seven trips to the mound, delivering a 3.89 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 38:12 K:BB over 39.1 innings. Painter will look to shake this one off in his next start, which is scheduled to come on the road this weekend in Atlanta.

Painter was stellar Wednesday, as he held Arizona to just a pair of singles, though he ultimately came away with a no-decision as the Phillies failed to provide any run support in an eventual 1-0 defeat. Painter has now delivered three straight quality starts, allowing just four runs while striking out 21 over 20 innings during that span. He's lowered his ERA to 5.55 across 105.1 innings this season with a 1.37 WHIP and 91:37 K:BB. Painter is currently in line to face the Astros at home his next time out.

That's back-to-back quality starts for Painter, though the Phillies' offense didn't really come alive until the ninth inning. The right-hander allowed 12 runs over 27.1 innings across his five starts in August, adding a 26:10 K:BB. An ugly June and subsequent stint at Triple-A did some damage to his overall numbers, but he's been decent since returning to the majors at the end of July. On the year, Painter has a 5.95 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 85:37 K:BB through 98.1 innings over 20 games (18 starts). He's projected to make his next start in Arizona.

Per Paul Casella of MLB.com, Painter set career highs in innings (seven), whiffs (20) and pitches (100) while throwing first-pitch strikes to 22 of 27 hitters. It continued a solid stretch for the rookie since returning to the rotation, as he's posted a 3.62 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 26:10 K:BB over five starts since July 31. He owns a 6.04 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 79:34 K:BB across 92.1 innings this season and will look to keep improving in a favorable road matchup with the Angels next weekend.

Painter was authoring the finest start of his young career before starting to show signs of fatigue, carrying a no-hit bid into the sixth inning. It was still an encouraging performance despite St. Louis' two-run sixth frame, as the right-hander has now yielded two runs or fewer in three straight starts since being recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Painter will be looking to build on Monday's showing over the weekend in Minnesota, where he'll bring a 6.27 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 69:31 K:BB over 80.1 innings for the Phillies.

Painter was forced out of his most recent start in Wednesday's loss to the Nationals after four innings due to left hamstring tightness, but his early exit was deemed precautionary. Painter had to be lifted from Wednesday's start versus the Nationals after four innings when his left hamstring tightened up on him. His removal was seen as a precaution, however, and the rookie hurler won't miss a turn as long as he gets through his normal between-starts bullpen session without any hiccups.
