Padres' Robert Suarez: Earns 35th save
Suarez got the save Tuesday against the Dodgers, allowing one run on three hits over an inning of work. He did not record a strikeout.
Suarez entered with the Padres up 4-1 and quickly made the game interesting, allowing three straight base hits to open up the frame. Suarez was likely on his last batter with Shohei Ohtani on deck and got Miguel Rojas to ground into a 5-4-3 triple play to end the game on one swing. Suarez has now allowed at least run in four of his last eight outings and has given up eight runs over his last eight innings. It doesn't seem as though his grip on the closer's role is slipping away, but the Padres have capable fill-in options in Tanner Scott and Jason Adam if Suarez's struggles continue into the playoffs. Suarez now owns a 2.81 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 35 saves in 64 innings this season.

Suarez earned the save Sunday against the White Sox, allowing one hit and striking out two during a scoreless ninth inning.
Suarez allowed just a two-out single before striking out Gavin Sheets to end the game. Sunday was just his second outing with multiple strikeouts since Aug. 10, and he's converted just three of his past six save chances and has given up seven runs in that span. Suarez has still been elite in his first season as a closer overall, as he owns a 2.71 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 58:15 K:BB in 63 innings while racking up 34 saves.

He's now at a 2.59 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 54:14 K:BB with 32 saves across 59 innings as the Padres' closer this year. His recent slip-ups don't appear to be putting his role in danger yet.

Padres' Robert Suarez: Collects four-out save
Suarez earned a four-out save Tuesday against the Mariners, allowing a hit and striking out two.
Suarez came in to relieve Jason Adam with two men on and two outs in the eighth inning and got out of it clean. He reentered in the ninth protecting a four-run lead and sandwiched a pair of strikeouts around a single to pick up his first save in over a week. Tuesday's strong effort comes on the heels of arguably the roughest outing of the year for Suarez. He managed to punch out multiple batters in an appearance for the first time since Aug. 8 and recorded more than three outs for the first time since July 26. He's now up to 32 saves to complement a stellar 2.48 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 54:14 K:BB in 58 innings this year.

Padres' Robert Suarez: Implodes Thursday for blown save
Suarez (8-3) took the loss and blew a save against the Tigers on Thursday, allowing four runs on two hits and two walks while striking out one batter over two-thirds of an inning.
Suarez entered Thursday having successfully converted eight straight save chances, but he didn't have his best stuff against Detroit. The right-hander had a three-run lead to work with in the top of the ninth and found himself in quick trouble, giving up a leadoff single followed by a walk. Suarez retired Spencer Torkelson on a popup but then issued another walk to load the bases. It looked like the closer might get out of the jam when he fanned Kerry Carpenter for the second out, but Parker Meadows followed with a grand slam on a 3-2 fastball to push the Tigers into the lead. Suarez has been great this year with 31 saves in 35 opportunities, but he has faded a bit lately, posting a 6.23 ERA and 1.69 WHIP over his last 13 innings while giving up at least one earned run in six of 14 appearances since Aug. 3. If San Diego were to consider moving Suarez out of the closer role, Tanner Scott -- who has 20 saves (mostly with Miami) and a 1.44 ERA on the campaign -- would be a very capable fill-in.

Nolan Arenado hit a walk-off single to hand Suarez his first loss since June 18. Suarez struck out one in a perfect inning to earn the save in Saturday's 3-2 win over the Rockies.
This was the Padres' first save opportunity since the trade deadline. The Padres took the lead that frame, and Tanner Scott worked the eighth before Suarez handled the ninth on a crisp nine pitches. So far, it looks like Suarez will remain in the closer role, one in which he's excelled in for most of the year despite converting just three of five save chances in July. He's at a 1.44 ERA, 0.82 WHIP and 43:8 K:BB while adding 24 saves in 27 chances through 43.2 innings.
