  • Astros' Shay Whitcomb: Optioned to Triple-A

The Astros optioned Whitcomb to Triple-A Sugar Land on Friday, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.

Whitcomb recently had a particularly rough game defensively and is also just 2-for-13 at the dish this month. Zach Dezenzo will move into his roster spot.

  • Astros' Shay Whitcomb: Getting Saturday off

Whitcomb isn't in Housotn's lineup Saturday against Baltimore, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.

Whitcomb has gone 6-for-21 with two RBI through the first seven games of his MLB career, and he'll get a chance to rest Saturday while Alex Bregman starts at the hot corner.

  • Astros' Shay Whitcomb: Getting on base

Whitcomb went 1-for-2 with two walks Friday against the Orioles.

Whitcomb was originally called up to replace Alex Bregman in the lineup, but his defensive versatility has allowed him to see consistent playing time -- most recently filling in for Yordan Alvarez (neck) on Friday. Whitcomb has now started seven straight games and has gotten on base at a .423 clip while striking out at just a 19.2 percent clip across his first 26 plate appearances in the majors.

  • Astros' Shay Whitcomb: In lineup after Alvarez scratch

Whitcomb will bat sixth and play third base Friday against Baltimore, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.

Whitcomb was initially slated for a day off after making six consecutive starts. However, with Yordan Alvarez being a late scratch due to neck discomfort, Whitcomb is now part of the starting nine. Alex Bregman will shift back to DH.

  • Astros' Shay Whitcomb: Getting night off

Whitcomb is out of the lineup for Friday's game against Baltimore.

Whitcomb made six straight starts at third base after being called up Aug. 17 and went 5-for-19 with two doubles, two RBI and a run scored during that stretch while Alex Bregman dealt with an elbow issue. Bregman appears to be just about recovered though, and he'll handle the hot corner Friday.

  • Astros' Shay Whitcomb: On base three times in debut

Whitcomb went 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and a run scored in Saturday's 6-1 win over the White Sox.

Whitcomb didn't feature in Friday's contest after receiving his first career call-up from Triple-A Sugar Land. He only had to wait a day for his debut, and he made the most of it as one of six Astros to log multiple hits. Whitcomb got the start at third base in place of Alex Bregman (elbow), who is considered day-to-day. Whitcomb slashed .293/.378/.530 with 25 home runs, 26 stolen bases, 91 RBI and 73 runs scored over 108 contests with Sugar Land. Assuming he adjusts adequately to major-league pitching, his defensive versatility should be enough for him to find his way into the lineup, especially if he can push the struggling Jon Singleton for playing time at first base.

  • Astros' Shay Whitcomb: Contract selected ahead of debut

The Astros selected Whitcomb's contract from Triple-A Sugar Land on Friday, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Whitcomb has slashed .293/.378/.530 slash line in 108 games with Sugar Land this season, popping 25 home runs and stealing 26 bases along the way, and he led the entire minors leagues with 35 homers in 2023. He can play all over the infield and has also been used some in the outfield this year. Whitcomb could initially see his reps at third base with Alex Bregman (elbow) banged up, but first base is another option since it's been a weak spot for the Astros. The 25-year-old is not in the lineup for Friday's game versus the White Sox.

  • Astros' Shay Whitcomb: Promotion coming Friday

The Astros are expected to select Whitcomb's contract from Triple-A Sugar Land on Friday, Ari Alexander of KPRC 2 Houston reports.

The 25-year-old is one of the Astros' top remaining prospects after the trade deadline and has taken a major step forward at Triple-A this season with 25 homers, 26 steals and a .293/.378/.530 slash line in 108 games, which earned him his first look in the big leagues. Whitcomb has played all over the diamond at Sugar Land, and while he's seen most of his playing time at second base, third base and shortstop, Houston's major lineup hole is at first base. The utility player is likely to see plenty of action there in addition to the corner outfield and designated hitter spots.
