Buttrey was assigned to minor-league spring training Monday, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports.

Buttrey signed a minor-league contract with the Mariners on Tuesday.

Buttrey will attempt to carve out a role for himself in the Mariners organization after surrendering eight runs in 13.1 frames with the Astros' Triple-A affiliate last season. The 30-year-old righty hasn't pitched in the big leagues since 2020 during a stint with the Angels.

  • Ty Buttrey: Cut by 'Stros

The Astros released Buttrey on Tuesday, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.

After putting up a 5.40 ERA and 1.83 WHIP through 13.1 innings with Triple-A Sugar Land, Buttrey will now look to latch on with another organization. The 30-year-old righty hasn't pitched in the majors since 2020.

  • Astros' Ty Buttrey: Returns to action at Sugar Land

Buttrey (finger) has made one appearance out of the bullpen since being reinstated from Triple-A Sugar Land's 7-day injured list Friday, covering two scoreless innings while allowing no hits and two walks and striking out one batter.

Buttrey's appearance Saturday was his first for the Triple-A club since late April after he missed more than two months while recovering from a fractured right middle finger. Sugar Land welcomed Buttrey back into its bullpen after he made three rehab appearances in the rookie-level Florida Complex League.

  • Astros' Ty Buttrey: Recovering from fractured finger

Buttrey announced Wednesday via his personal Twitter account that he has reported to the Astros' spring training facility in West Palm Beach, Fla. to begin rehab for a small hairline fracture in his right middle finger.

Buttrey disclosed that he sustained the injury while fielding a comebacker, presumably during his most recent appearance for Triple-A Sugar Land on April 25. Expect Sugar Land to place Buttrey on its 7-day injured list in the coming days. The 30-year-old right-hander had made a strong early case for a promotion to the big club after logging a 1.93 ERA and 1.19 WHIP over 4.2 innings at Sugar Land.

  • Astros' Ty Buttrey: Doesn't make team

Buttrey was informed that he did not make the Astros' Opening Day roster Saturday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.

Buttrey was with the team in camp on a minor-league deal, and he surrendered five earned runs across nine innings of work. He'll likely begin the season with Triple-A Sugar Land and could serve as depth out of Houston's bullpen at some point during the regular season.

  • Astros' Ty Buttrey: Inks minors deal with Houston

Buttrey signed a minor-league contract with the Astros on Tuesday that includes an invitation to major-league spring training, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports.

The 29-year-old reliever spent all of last season at Triple-A Salt Lake in the Angels organization, posting a 5.94 ERA and 1.69 WHIP through 36.1 frames. Buttrey hasn't been particularly effective in the majors since 2019, so he could be destined for another season in the minors.

  • Angels' Ty Buttrey: Outrighted to Triple-A

Buttrey cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Salt Lake on Wednesday.

Buttrey has been at Salt Lake since the start of the regular season, and he's posted a 5.11 ERA and 1.24 WHIP in 12.1 innings over 13 relief appearances. He'll remain with the Triple-A club after going unclaimed on waivers.

Buttrey was designated for assignment by the Angels on Wednesday.

Buttrey was reinstated from the restricted list in early April and has been with Triple-A Salt Lake all season, but the Angels have now removed him from the 40-man roster. The right-hander has a 5.11 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 5:3 K:BB over 12.1 innings this season and could remain at Salt Lake if he passes through waivers unclaimed.

  • Angels' Ty Buttrey: Sees first action since 2020

Buttrey pitched a perfect inning for Triple-A Salt Lake on Saturday.

Buttrey decided to unretire in the offseason and joined the Angels during camp in March, but he had been on the team's developmental list until Thursday, per Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register. Independent baseball writer Taylor Blake Ward notes that Buttrey averaged 92.3 mph on his fastball during Saturday's outing, which is significantly below the mid-to-high 90s velocity he posted during his last few seasons in the majors. Buttrey hadn't thrown in a competitive setting since September of 2020, so he'll likely need ample time to build up in anticipation of a potential return to the big club at some point during the campaign.

  • Angels' Ty Buttrey: Reinstated, sent down

Buttrey was reinstated from the restricted list and optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake on Saturday.

Buttrey announced his retirement from baseball prior to the 2021 campaign but reported to camp this spring as he attempts a comeback. He wasn't able to participate in Cactus League games while he was on the restricted list, and he'll need to prove himself in the minors if he hopes to rejoin the major-league club at some point.

  • Angels' Ty Buttrey: Decision on roster status awaits

Buttrey remains on the Angels' restricted list and is not currently eligible to play in Cactus League games, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.

Prior to the start of last season, Buttrey announced his retirement from Major League Baseball, but he has since changed his mind and recently reported to Angels camp. However, as a player on the restricted list, he can appear only in spring training B games -- not in big-league Cactus League games. Per Fletcher, the Angels have 30 days from his reporting date to determine whether they want to put him back on the 40-man roster.

  • Angels' Ty Buttrey: Reports to Angels' camp

Buttrey reported to camp with the Angels on Friday, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.

Buttrey announced his retirement before the start of last season, but he has remained on the Angels' restricted list. While that means that he is still a member of the organization now that he has decided to resume his career, the Angels are working on figuring out his roster status, per Fletcher. Buttrey is only 28 years old and has enjoyed some solid big-league seasons, so he could contribute to the team's bullpen in 2022. However, it remains to be seen how much the year off has cost him in terms of physical readiness for the demands of a full major-league season.

  • Ty Buttrey: Pursuing return

Buttrey announced Sunday that he's hopeful to resume his baseball career in 2022, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.

Shortly before Opening Day last season, Buttrey said he was planning to retire from professional baseball, citing personal reasons. After a year away from the game, the 28-year-old has apparently changed his stance. The owner of a career 4.30 ERA and 1.30 WHIP over 115 appearances, Buttrey shouldn't have much trouble securing a minor-league deal, at the very least.

  • Angels' Ty Buttrey: Stepping away from baseball

Buttrey announced via his personal Instagram account Saturday that he is retiring from professional baseball for personal reasons.

The 28-year-old indicated he initially made his decision to retire before being optioned to the minors March 28, and his mind remained unchanged after taking some additional time to contemplate the decision. Buttrey appeared in 115 games over his three major-league seasons and had a 4.30 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 122:37 K:BB over 115.0 innings.

  • Angels' Ty Buttrey: Taking break from baseball

Buttrey, who was placed on the restricted list Friday, has chosen to walk away from the game for the time being, according to manager Joe Maddon, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.

He was optioned to minor-league camp March 28, but apparently did not accept the assignment to the alternate training site. It sounds like Buttrey is unhappy with his current standing in the Angels organization and is contemplating his options. He should be considered out indefinitely.

  • Angels' Ty Buttrey: On restricted list

Buttrey has been placed on the restricted list and didn't report to the alternate training site, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.

He was optioned to minor-league camp March 28, and it sounds like he might have taken issue with that demotion. Consider him away from the team until his status is cleared up.

  • Angels' Ty Buttrey: Gets demoted

The Angels optioned Buttrey to their minor-league camp Sunday.

After accruing 11 saves and 34 holds across the past three seasons, Buttrey appeared in good shape to make the Opening Day roster as a high-leverage reliever for Anaheim. While he wasn't especially sharp this spring (3.86 ERA, 1.86 WHIP in seven innings), Buttrey's demotion still comes as a surprise. Offseason pickup Raisel Iglesias is locked in as the Angels' closer, but the bullpen looks quite unsettled after the top option.

  • Angels' Ty Buttrey: Yields three runs Sunday

Buttrey gave up three runs (one earned) on four hits and one walk while striking out two in one inning against the Padres in a Cactus League contest Sunday.

An inning-opening error meant that only one of the runs Buttrey allowed was earned, but it was still a rough outing for the right-hander as he gave up four hits, including two doubles. Buttrey should open the season in the Angels' bullpen but isn't likely to match the five saves he snagged last season given the presence of new closer Raisel Iglesias.
