  • Astros' Drew Ferguson: In player pool

Ferguson was added to the Astros' 60-man player pool Sunday.

Ferguson is a 26-year-old outfielder that's not on the 40-man roster and has more than 700 at-bats at the Triple-A level. That proximity to the big leagues is what compelled the Astros to put him in the player pool.

  • Astros' Drew Ferguson: Heads to IL

Ferguson was placed on the 7-day injured list Thursday due to an undisclosed injury.

It remains to be seen what type of injury Ferguson is dealing with, although it's obviously significant enough to warrant a trip to the injured list. Reliever Tanner Duncan was called up to Triple-A Round Rock in a corresponding move.

  • Astros' Drew Ferguson: Returns to Astros

Ferguson cleared waivers Friday and was returned to the Astros, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports.

Ferguson was selected in the Rule 5 draft this offseason but was designated for assignment by the Giants on Thursday. The 26-year-old endured a rough spring training with a .111/.294/.111 slash line, four stolen bases and six walks through 20 games. Ferguson should return to Triple-A, where he slashed .305/.436/.429 over 65 games in 2019.

  • Giants' Drew Ferguson: Designated for assignment

Ferguson was designated for assignment Thursday, Kerry Crowley of The San Jose Mercury News reports.

Ferguson was the 14th pick of the Rule 5 draft this offseason. He can now be claimed by another team that would also have to carry him on its major-league roster. If he's not, he would likely head back to the Astros' minor-league system. Ferguson managed only three hits in 27 at-bats this spring.

  • Giants' Drew Ferguson: Heads to Giants

Ferguson was selected by the Giants with the 14th pick of the Rule 5 draft.

A 26-year-old outfielder who looks like a Quadruple-A hitter on paper, Ferguson hit .305/.436/.429 with four home runs and six steals in 292 plate appearances in the Pacific Coast League as a member of the Astros' organization. This is a good opportunity for Ferguson, as he was unlikely to ever break through with Houston, but may get a shot in San Francisco.
