  • Darwinzon Hernandez: Cut loose by Baltimore

Hernandez was released by the Orioles on Thursday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. Hernandez never pitched for the O's after being acquired from the Red Sox in January. He did post a 2.96 ERA with 37 strikeouts over 27.1 frames at Triple-A Norfolk, although that came with his usual control problems with 19 walks. Some team will take another shot on his big left-handed arm, but it surely would be on a minor-league deal.

  • Orioles' Darwinzon Hernandez: Reassigned to minor-league camp

Hernandez was reassigned to minor-league camp by the Orioles on Monday, Dan Connolly of The Athletic reports. Hernandez made just two Grapefruit League appearances, allowing four runs and walking three over 1.1 innings. He'll head to Triple-A Norfolk and attempt to win a spot back on the 40-man roster.

  • Orioles' Darwinzon Hernandez: Outrighted to Triple-A

Hernandez cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Norfolk by the Orioles on Thursday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. Hernandez had been acquired from the Red Sox last month but lost his spot on the 40-man roster when the O's traded for Cole Irvin last week. Hernandez will still be in major-league camp this spring as a non-roster invitee. He has a robust 32.3 percent strikeout rate in his major-league career but has been held back by a 17.7 percent walk rate.

  • Orioles' Darwinzon Hernandez: Moved off 40-man roster

Hernandez was designated for assignment by the Orioles on Thursday, MASN's Roch Kubatko reports. Cole Irvin, just acquired from the Athletics, will take over the 40-man roster spot that Hernandez once occupied. Hernandez flashed impressive stuff in the early part of his tenure with the Red Sox, but they shipped him off to the O's earlier this month in exchange for cash, and now he's back in DFA limbo.

  • Orioles' Darwinzon Hernandez: Stays in AL East with O's

The Orioles acquired Hernandez from the Red Sox on Wednesday in exchange for cash considerations. Baltimore designated first baseman Lewin Diaz for assignment to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Hernandez, a 26-year-old lefty reliever. With a 32.3 percent strikeout rate over his 91 career MLB appearances, Hernandez's upside is easy to recognize, but an inability to keep free passes in check prevented him from claiming a notable role in Boston's bullpen over the last few years. Hernandez's 17.7 percent walk rate is the worst mark among all pitchers in the majors with at least 80 inning pitched since the start of the 2019 season.

  • Red Sox's Darwinzon Hernandez: DFA'd by Red Sox

Hernandez was designated for assignment by Boston on Friday. After the Red Sox made the signing of Justin Turner official Friday, Hernandez needed to be booted off the 40-man to make room on the roster. After a solid 2021 campaign, Hernandez struggled to get things going in 2022, recording a 5.73 ERA and 1.48 WHIP through 33 Triple-A innings. The majors were even more unkind to Hernandez last year, as he allowed 16 earned runs over just 6.2 frames. Until he can show signs of improvement, he will most likely remain in the minors.

  • Red Sox's Darwinzon Hernandez: Returns to majors

The Red Sox recalled Hernandez from Triple-A Worcester on Monday. Boston optioned right-hander Josh Winckowski to the minors following Sunday's loss to Toronto to open up room on the 28-man active roster and in the bullpen for Hernandez. The southpaw struggled mightily across multiple stints in the majors earlier this season, covering 6.2 innings in total over his seven appearances while allowing 16 earned runs on 14 hits and eight walks.

  • Red Sox's Darwinzon Hernandez: Sent back to minors

Hernandez was optioned to Triple-A Worcester on Sunday, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. The 25-year-old was promoted by the Red Sox last week and surrendered 11 runs with a 3:6 K:BB across three frames in three appearances. Hernandez will now return to Worcester, where he has a 4.68 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 41:18 K:BB over 25 innings this season.

  • Red Sox's Darwinzon Hernandez: Back in big leagues

The Red Sox recalled Hernandez from Triple-A Worcester on Thursday. He provides Boston with a fresh arm out of the bullpen after starter Rich Hill covered only three innings in Wednesday's 6-1 loss in Houston, leaving four relievers to cover the remaining five frames. Two of those relievers -- Brayan Bello (groin) and Kaleb Ort -- were placed on the 15-day injured list and optioned to Triple-A, respectively -- to clear room on the active roster for Hernandez, who is likely to serve as a low-leverage arm.

  • Red Sox's Darwinzon Hernandez: Sent to minors

Hernandez was optioned to Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday, Bill Koch of The Providence Journal reports. Hernandez was recalled from Triple-A and saw his first big-league action of the season over the past couple weeks, and he allowed five earned runs with a 6:2 K:BB across four outings. The 25-year-old will now return to Worcesther, where he has a 5.09 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 36:18 K:BB over 23 innings.

  • Red Sox's Darwinzon Hernandez: Recalled by Boston

Hernandez was recalled from Triple-A Worcester on Thursday. Hernandez missed a month and a half at Worcester due to a torn meniscus but returned to game action early last week. The southpaw allowed two hits and two walks while striking out six in 3.1 scoreless innings over four appearances in the minors after returning to full health, and he'll rejoin the major-league club after Josh Winckowski (illness) was placed on the COVID-19 injured list.

  • Red Sox's Darwinzon Hernandez: Back in action at Triple-A

Hernandez has pitched well in three outings for Triple-A Worcester since returning from a torn meniscus Monday. Hernandez struck out two in a scoreless inning Saturday, giving him five strikeouts in 2.1 scoreless frames since his return. His 5.95 ERA in 19.2 innings prior to the injury was quite poor, so he'll have to continue pitching well if he's to push for a return to the big leagues.

  • Red Sox's Darwinzon Hernandez: Out with torn meniscus

Hernandez (knee) underwent surgery to repair a torn meniscus Thursday and will be out indefinitely, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. The 25-year-old landed on the 7-day injured list at Triple-A Worcester earlier this week with a MCL sprain, but he apparently also suffered a torn meniscus. It's unclear how long Hernandez will be sidelined, but he shouldn't be expected back anytime soon.

  • Red Sox's Darwinzon Hernandez: Will start in minors

Hernandez is expected to start the opener for Triple-A Worcester, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports. The Red Sox optioned Hernandez to the WooSox on Saturday in a surprising move, as the left-hander appeared to be ticketed for a bullpen role in Boston. Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Hernandez is expected to throw two-to-three innings per start with the goal to iron out his control, which has been an issue in the majors and minors -- he's consistently posted high BB/9 numbers, including a 7.0 mark for Boston in 2021. The belief is that he can put in work between starts with pitching coach Paul Abbott and become more consistent spotting his pitches. "We want him to throw fastballs up and breaking balls down and be consistent with that," Cora said. "And the more strikes he throws and when he throws the fastball up, there's no damage." Long term, the Red Sox still view Hernandez as a reliever, according to Ian Browne of MLB.com, but they want him not only in the zone, but in proper spots within the zone.

  • Red Sox's Darwinzon Hernandez: Optioned to Triple-A

Hernandez was optioned to Triple-A Worcester on Saturday, Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe reports. Hernandez had looked like he had a good shot to break camp in the big-league bullpen and was reportedly preparing to handle a multi-inning role. He'll instead head to the minors for now, presumably to work on his control. He's struck out 33.6 percent of opposing batters through 78.2 career major-league innings, but his 17.6 percent walk rate is far too high.

  • Red Sox's Darwinzon Hernandez: Set for bulk role

Hernandez is being stretched out for a multi-inning relief role this spring, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. Hernandez is expected to throw three innings in his next outing, though he's combined to throw only 2.1 innings across his first two spring appearances. A multi-frame relief role would be new for him, as he recorded more than three outs in only five of his 48 appearances in 2021. In order to successfully work longer outings, Hernandez would almost certainly have to improve upon his control, as he's walked 65 batters across 78.2 career innings.

  • Red Sox's Darwinzon Hernandez: Joins roster for ALCS

Hernandez was added to the Red Sox's roster Friday ahead of the ALCS against the Astros, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. Hernandez wasn't in Boston's plans for the Wild Card Game or the ALDS, but he'll have the chance to make his postseason debut this round. The Red Sox may have decided they needed one more left-hander in the bullpen, or he may simply have been the team's next-best reliever with Garrett Richards out with a hamstring injury and Matt Barnes not trusted with a roster spot.

  • Red Sox's Darwinzon Hernandez: Misses wild-card squad

Hernandez will not be part of the Red Sox's wild-card roster, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. Hernandez worked around a 17.0 percent walk rate this season to finish with a 3.38 ERA in 40 innings of work. He closed the season well, allowing runs in just one of his last 11 appearances, but he evidently isn't trusted enough to pitch in the highest-stakes game of the year thus far.

  • Red Sox's Darwinzon Hernandez: Begins rehab assignment

Hernandez (oblique) began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday, Bill Koch of The Providence Journal reports. Hernandez hit the injured list with a right oblique strain at the end of July. Given that he's been out for over a month, he'll likely need a small handful of rehab appearances before being activated.

  • Red Sox's Darwinzon Hernandez: Throwing from 80 feet

Hernandez (oblique) is playing catch from 80 feet, and manager Alex Cora characterized the left-hander's progression as "slow," Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. Hernandez resumed his throwing program after an MRI came back clean in early August, though he's not progressing quickly in his recovery from a strained right oblique. The 24-year-old remains without a timeline for his return but appears unlikely to be activated within the next couple weeks.
