Phillies' Rene Pinto: Nets MiLB pact from Phillies
The Phillies signed Pinto to a minor-league contract Jan. 6.
Pinto slashed .231/.263/.404 during parts of three seasons with the Rays from 2022-2024. He spent the 2025 campaign in the minors split between the Blue Jays and Diamondbacks organizations, hitting .259/.309/.498 with 12 homers in 64 games. Pinto will provide the Phillies with some experienced catching depth.

Rene Pinto: Released by Diamondbacks
The Diamondbacks released Pinto on Wednesday.
Pinto was removed from the club's 40-man roster prior to Opening Day and is now out of the organization altogether after slashing .268/.324/.517 with 11 homers in 54 games with Triple-A Reno. The 28-year-old will look to latch on with another organization in need of catching depth.

Diamondbacks' Rene Pinto: Outrighted to Triple-A
Pinto cleared waivers Saturday and was sent outright to Triple-A Reno, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports.
Pinto lost the spring battle against Jose Herrera for the backup catcher spot and was dropped from Arizona's 40-man roster Wednesday. Now that he's cleared waivers, Pinto should see regular action at Reno and would presumably be selected to the active roster if Herrera or Gabriel Moreno were to miss time.

The Diamondbacks designated Pinto for assignment Wednesday, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports.
Pinto was claimed off waivers by the Diamondbacks in January. He competed against Jose Herrera for backup catching duties behind Gabriel Moreno during spring training, but Pinto didn't crack the Opening Day roster after slashing .263/.263/.421 with two RBI across 19 plate appearances.

Pinto has slashed .231/.263/.404 with 10 homers over 82 games at the big-league level but spent most of 2024 at Triple-A Durham in the Rays organization. He is out of minor-league options, so the Diamondbacks will need to carry him on the Opening Day roster or attempt to pass him through waivers.

The Orioles designated Pinto for assignment Friday, Danielle Allentuck of TheBaltimoreBanner.com reports.
Baltimore claimed the 28-year-old off waivers in November to compete for the backup catcher spot, but he became expendable after the O's signed Gary Sanchez to a one-year deal in December. Pinto will forfeit his spot on the 40-man roster to make room for the newly signed Charlie Morton and once again hit the waiver wire. Pinto has slashed .231/.263/.404 with 32 RBI over 83 career games in the majors, all with the Rays.

The Orioles claimed Pinto off waivers from the Rays on Monday, Matt Weyrich of The Baltimore Sun reports.
Pinto began the 2024 season as the Rays' starting catcher but was sent down in early May after a slow start and was never recalled. The 28-year-old has hit .231/.263/.404 with 10 home runs over 82 games at the big-league level. Baltimore has an opening at backup catcher and Pinto will be a candidate to fill it.

Pinto drilled a three-run shot in the fourth inning and later tacked on a solo blast. They were his first two home runs of 2024, as well as his first multi-hit performance. The 27-year-old catcher boosted his OPS to .863 with four extra-base hits through 28 plate appearances.

Rays manager Kevin Cash said Tuesday that the team is "going to lean heavy" on Pinto at catcher this season, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
The Rays traded Christian Bethancourt this offseason and didn't really replace him, leaving Alex Jackson and Rob Brantly to battle for the backup job. Pinto popped six home runs in 38 games last season and rated very well from an average exit velocity (90.5 mph) and barrel rate (15.9 percent) perspective, but a 34:2 K:BB was worrisome. It sounds like he's going to receive all the playing time he can handle, and he has enough power to be relevant in two-catcher leagues.

Rays' Rene Pinto: Headed for big opportunity
Pinto is currently the only catcher on the Rays' 40-man roster and is expected to get a lot of opportunities in the starting lineup, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports.
Pinto emerged as a viable backup across the second half of the 2023 season, but he should see a more significant role with both Christian Bethancourt and Francisco Mejia in new organizations. Across 105 plate appearances last year, Pinto posted a .204 ISO and 98 wRC+, though those marks also came with a 32.4 percent strikeout rate and only a 1.9 percent walk rate. His batting average could be a significant concern as a result.
