  • Adrian Gonzalez: Announces retirement

Gonzalez retired from baseball Saturday, the first baseman announced on his personal Instagram page.

Gonzalez spent 15 seasons in the majors, appearing for the Rangers, Padres, Red Sox, Dodgers and Mets. He'll retire with 2,050 hits and 317 homers. His last MLB action came in 2018, but he did appear in the Mexican League and at the Olympics last season.

  • Adrian Gonzalez: Stages workout for teams

Gonzalez held a workout for teams earlier in January, John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports 98.7 FM reports.

The 36-year-old seems fully intent on playing in 2019, but he's unlikely to have much of a market after slashing .237/.299/.373 with only six home runs in 187 plate appearances last season with the Mets. If he's willing to accept a minor-league deal, Gonzalez shouldn't have much trouble getting a look in a big-league camp this spring, but the odds are probably against him making an Opening Day roster.

  • Adrian Gonzalez: Looking to play next season

Gonzalez told MLB Network Radio on Tuesday that he plans to play next season.

Gonzalez opened the season as the Mets' primary first baseman, but he was cut loose after hitting just .237/.299/.373 with six homers through 54 games. It sounds like the veteran first baseman wants to play one more season before retiring in an effort to end his playing career on a positive note. Seeing as Gonzalez has played in just 125 games over the past two seasons, hitting .240/.292/.363 with nine homers over that stretch, he doesn't figure to carry much fantasy value even if he does latch on somewhere.

Gonzalez was cut after going 1-for-16 in his past five games. He appeared in 53 games for New York this season and put together a .241/.304/.380 batting line with six homers and 26 RBI.

  • Mets' Adrian Gonzalez: Records base knock

Gonzalez went 1-for-4 with two RBI during Friday's loss to the Cubs.

Gonzalez drove in two runs in the eighth with a single to center, but it wasn't enough as the Cubs rallied to win 7-4. Through 47 games this season, he's slashing .260/.325/.411 with six home runs and 26 RBI.

  • Mets' Adrian Gonzalez: Situated on bench Thursday

Gonzalez is not in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Cubs.

Gonzalez will take his usual seat on the bench with a southpaw in Jose Quintana starting for the Cubs. Jay Bruce will pick up a start at first base in his stead, opening up a spot for Jose Bautista to start in the outfield.

  • Mets' Adrian Gonzalez: Drives in two Wednesday

Gonzalez went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI in Wednesday's win over the Braves.

He's now racked up a .313/.353/.469 slash line over his last 10 games with a homer, four RBI and four runs, although the home run and all the RBI have come in his last three contests. Gonzalez's production will likely remain spotty hitting sixth in an inconsistent Mets offense, but the 36-year-old is still capable of making a contribution in deeper formats.

  • Mets' Adrian Gonzalez: Pops sixth homer Tuesday

Gonzalez went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Tuesday's loss to the Braves.

The veteran slugger now has six homers and 22 RBI in 44 games to go along with a .255/.325/.409 slash line -- an improvement on his awful 2017, but still below the standards of his best years with the Dodgers. Gonzalez should continue to see consistent at-bats for now, but if the reeling Mets decide to pack it in for the season, expect them to turn first base over to a younger player, whether it's Dominic Smith or top prospect Peter Alonso.

  • Mets' Adrian Gonzalez: Out of Monday's lineup

Gonzalez is out of Monday's lineup against the Braves, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

With the Mets facing a southpaw (Max Fried), Gonzalez will head to the bench and Jay Bruce will move in to play first base, hitting fifth. The emergence of Brandon Nimmo could push Bruce to first base more often once Yoenis Cespedes (hip) comes off the disabled list in a couple weeks.

Gonzalez is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Marlins, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.

As per usual, Gonzalez will head to the bench with a southpaw (Caleb Smith) on the mound for the opposition. Wilmer Flores will slide over to first base in his stead, opening up a spot for Jose Reyes to start at the hot corner.

  • Mets' Adrian Gonzalez: Heads to bench against lefty

Gonzalez is not in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Diamondbacks, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

Left-hander Patrick Corbin will take the ball for Arizona on Saturday, resulting in Wilmer Flores getting the start at first base. Righty Clay Buchholz is expected to start for the Diamondbacks on Sunday, so Gonzalez may be back in the lineup for that one.
