  • Marlins' Xavier Edwards: Triples-happy in Friday's win

Edwards went 4-for-6 with three triples, four RBI and two runs scored in Friday's win over Toronto. Edwards knocked a pair of two-run triples in the second and seventh innings, sandwiched around another triple in the fourth. He became the first Marlin to ever rack up three triples in a game. It was Edwards' fourth consecutive multi-hit contest, during which he had five extra-base hits and seven RBI. For the year, he owns an impressive .327/.396/.420 slash line with 17 extra-base hits and 37 runs scored through 68 games.

  • Marlins' Xavier Edwards: Resting Saturday

Edwards isn't part of the starting lineup for Saturday's game against Atlanta. After making seven straight starts, Edwards will get the day off Saturday against Max Fried and Atlanta. Javier Sanoja will slot in at shortstop and bat sixth.

  • Marlins' Xavier Edwards: Out of lineup again Wednesday

Edwards is not in the lineup for Wednesday's contest versus the Pirates. Edwards is getting a second consecutive day off for. He isn't dealing with any known injury, so Edwards may just be getting a couple days to hit the reset button after posting a .433 OPS in seven games since returning from the injured list. Otto Lopez will start at shortstop in Wednesday's series finale.

  • Marlins' Xavier Edwards: Pilfers bag No. 25

Edwards went 0-for-2 with a walk, a run scored, an RBI and a stolen base in Sunday's rout of the Phillies. Even without collecting a hit, Edwards still made a contribution from the leadoff spot in a 10-1 win. The switch-hitting shortstop is up to 25 steals on the season in only 53 big-league games, including three in the last two contests, and he's slashing an impressive .325/.399/.401 with one homer, 19 RBI and 29 runs.

  • Marlins' Xavier Edwards: Swipes two bags in win

Edwards went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two stolen bases in Saturday's 9-5 win over the Phillies. The breakout shortstop made an impact once again for the Marlins from the leadoff spot. The steals were the first for Edwards since he returned from the IL on Sept. 3, and in 52 big-league games this season he's gone 24-for-26 on the basepaths while slashing .328/.402/.405 with one homer, 18 RBI and 28 runs.

  • Marlins' Xavier Edwards: Aiming for return this week

Edwards (back) resumed full baseball activities last week and anticipates returning from the 10-day injured list at some point during the Marlins' six-game homestand that runs Tuesday through Sunday, MLB.com reports. Miami placed Edwards on the IL on Aug. 26 with mild back extensor soreness, but he looks poised to return in the minimum 10 days or close to it. Once reinstated, Edwards should reclaim an everyday role at shortstop while potentially displacing Connor Norby as the Marlins' primary leadoff hitter.

  • Marlins' Xavier Edwards: Goes on IL with sore back

The Marlins placed Edwards on the 10-day injured list due to mild back extensor soreness. Edwards missed the final two games of the Marlins' series against the Cubs over the weekend with the back issue, and though an MRI on Sunday returned negative, the team will err on the side of caution and deactivate him. Before landing on the IL, Edwards was able to take some swings and do some throwing on the field Sunday, so he could have a chance at returning from the IL when first eligible Sept. 3. Vidal Brujan is expected to serve as the Marlins' primary shortstop in place of Edwards, who had slashed .356/.432/.442 with 10 extra-base hits and 22 stolen bases since moving into a full-time role at the beginning of July.

  • Marlins' Xavier Edwards: Expected to go on IL

The Marlins are expected to place Edwards (back) on the 10-day injured list prior to Monday's game against the Rockies, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. Outfielder Griffin Conine is set to receive a call-up from Triple-A Jacksonville and will meet up with the Marlins in Colorado for the start of the club's four-game series with the Rockies, while Edwards will head to the IL to open up on a spot on the 26-man active roster. Edwards had missed the Marlins' past two games with lower-back discomfort, and though an MRI returned negative and he was able to do some work on the field Sunday, the club wants to give the young infielder more time to heal up from the injury. Edwards' placement on the IL will be retroactive to Saturday, and he should have a good chance at being ready to return when first eligible Sept. 3. Vidal Brujan is likely to step in as the Marlins' primary shortstop while Edwards is on the shelf.

  • Marlins' Xavier Edwards: Remaining on bench Sunday

Edwards (back) is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Cubs. The 25-year-old will sit for the second straight game after he exited Friday's contest due to lower-back discomfort. Edwards had medical imaging on his back come back negative Saturday, and he took a step forward prior to Sunday's game by taking some swings and doing some throwing, per Noah Berger of ElExtraBase.com. He can be considered day-to-day heading into the Marlins' upcoming four-game series in Colorado that begins Monday.

  • Marlins' Xavier Edwards: Imaging negative, DTD

Imaging on Edwards' lower back came back negative Saturday, and he's considered day-to-day, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. Edwards was removed from Friday's game against the Cubs due to a lower-back injury he sustained while attempting to steal a base. Considering Saturday's testing didn't reveal any significant injury, Edwards shouldn't miss more than a few games -- if he misses time at all. The Marlins close out a home series against the Cubs on Sunday before heading out on a seven-game road trip.

  • Marlins' Xavier Edwards: Not starting Saturday

Edwards (back) is not in the starting lineup for Saturday's game against the Cubs. Edwards left in the third inning of Friday's game due to lower-back discomfort that he experienced when stealing second base. Vidal Brujan will start at shortstop Saturday and bat eighth against Cubs southpaw Shota Imanaga.

  • Marlins' Xavier Edwards: Exits early Friday

Edwards was removed from Friday's game against the Cubs due to lower-back discomfort, Daniel Alvarez-Montes of ElExtraBase.com reports. Edwards singled during his lone at-bat Friday and then stole second base, but he was replaced at shortstop once the Marlins took the field in the third inning. The severity of his back injury remains unknown, though Vidal Brujan would presumably take over as Miami's starting shortstop if Edwards is unable to play Saturday.

  • Marlins' Xavier Edwards: Swipes two more bags Saturday

Edwards went 1-for-4 with two walks, a run scored and two stolen bases in Saturday's 9-8 extra-inning loss to the Padres. The Marlins ran wild on Kyle Higashioka, going 5-for-5 on steal attempts on the afternoon with Edwards leading the charge. The 25-year-old shortstop is up to 15 stolen bases in 17 attempts through only 37 games on the season, but he's been even more dangerous on the basepaths over the last couple weeks, going 11-for-11 in the last 16 contests while slashing .359/.419/.469. The last player in MLB history to steal 100 or more bases over a full season was Vince Coleman in 1987 with 109, but that's the kind of pace Edwards is on right now.

  • Marlins' Xavier Edwards: Two steals against Atlanta

Edwards went 2-for-4 with a run scored and two stolen bases in Friday's loss to Atlanta. The switch hitter continues to be a terror on the basepaths, going 8-for-8 on steal attempts over the last 11 games. Edwards is also batting an absurd .447 (17-for-38) during that stretch with eight runs, eight RBI and a 7:8 BB:K, and he's cementing his spot as the Marlins' shortstop, and leadoff hitter, of the present and future.

  • Marlins' Xavier Edwards: Drives in three against Tampa

Edwards went 1-for-3 with three RBI in Wednesday's win over the Rays. A sacrifice fly in the third inning and a two-run single in the seventh accounted for half of the Marlins' offense in a 6-2 victory over the team that traded Edwards to Miami in 2022. The 24-year-old shortstop is establishing himself as one of the key players in the Marlins' latest rebuild, slashing a stunning .395/.461/.500 through 24 games in July with a homer, nine steals, 12 RBI and 14 runs.

  • Marlins' Xavier Edwards: Two pilfers in Sunday's win

Edwards went 2-for-3 with a walk, a run scored, an RBI and two stolen bases in Sunday's win over the Reds. The 24-year-old switch hitter, acquired from the Rays in Nov. 2022, appears to be solidifying his spot as the Marlins' shortstop of both the present and the future. Edwards has multiple hits in six of the last eight games, batting .448 (13-for-29) over that stretch with two doubles, two RBI, three steals, four runs and a 4:3 BB:K. Manager Skip Schumaker has mainly had Edwards hitting fifth or lower since his promotion at the beginning of the month, but his skill set would seem very well suited for the top of the batting order.

  • Marlins' Xavier Edwards: Taking hold of regular role

Edwards will start at shortstop and bat sixth in Sunday's game against the White Sox. Since being called up from Triple-A Jacksonville on Tuesday, Edwards has picked up six straight starts while stepping in as the club's new everyday shortstop in place of Tim Anderson, who was designated for assignment. Edwards has gone 6-for-19 with a double, two walks, three runs and one RBI over his first five starts, and so long as he can keep turning in productive at-bats, he should have a stranglehold on a regular role. The 24-year-old hasn't made an impact on the basepaths yet, but he stole five bags in 119 plate appearances at Triple-A earlier this season and recorded 37 steals between 123 games with Jacksonville and the Marlins in 2023.

  • Marlins' Xavier Edwards: Recalled from Triple-A

The Marlins recalled Edwards from Triple-A Jacksonville on Tuesday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. Edwards is taking the roster spot vacated by Tim Anderson, who has been designated for assignment. The switch-hitting Edwards could also get a shot at shortstop in Anderson's place, although he will have to contend with Vidal Brujan there for playing time. Edwards is a potential stolen-base contributor in fantasy should he receive regular reps, although it's a question as to whether he'll ultimately hit enough to be able to take advantage of that speed.

  • Marlins' Xavier Edwards: Demoted to Triple-A

The Marlins optioned Edwards to Triple-A Jacksonville on Monday. With Tim Anderson (personal) returning from the bereavement list and Otto Lopez (personal) coming off the paternity list, the Marlins will send Edwards and Tristan Gray back to Triple-A after both were up with the big club for the weekend. Edwards, who has missed most of the season while recovering from a bacterial infection of his left foot, appeared in three games against Cleveland over the weekend and went 2-for-9 with a double, two walks and one run.

  • Marlins' Xavier Edwards: Poised for rehab assignment

Edwards (foot) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Jacksonville on Saturday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. Edwards' recovery from a bacterial infection in his left foot has gone very slowly, but he's finally ready to play in some games. It will be his first game action since early March, so he will need time in the minors to knock the rust off before the Marlins consider adding him to the big-league roster.
