Rangers' Willie MacIver: Claimed by Rangers
The Rangers claimed MacIver off waivers from the Athletics on Wednesday.
MacIver got his feet wet at the big-league level in 2025, slashing .186/.252/.324 over 32 games for the Athletics. The Rangers have Jonah Heim and Kyle Higashioka slated to handle catching duties in 2026, so MacIver is merely a depth addition.

Athletics' Willie MacIver: Back in big leagues
The Athletics recalled MacIver from Triple-A Las Vegas on Tuesday.
The 28-year-old was optioned to Las Vegas in late July but will make a quick return to the majors to replace Austin Wynns (abdomen) on the active roster. MacIver has handled himself well at the plate in his first 17 big-league games this season with a .737 OPS, but he isn't likely to receive regular playing time while serving as the backup to starting catcher Shea Langeliers.

The Athletics optioned MacIver to Triple-A Las Vegas on Monday.
With Shea Langeliers (oblique) back from the 10-day injured list, MacIver's presence with the big club was no longer needed. He acquitted himself well during his first stint in the majors, posting a .737 OPS with a couple homers in 16 contests.

MacIver is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Royals.
The rookie got three straight starts after Shea Langeliers suffered an oblique strain earlier this month, but MacIver has since moved into a timeshare with Austin Wynns following the veteran's acquisition from the Reds. The two backstops have alternated starts over the Athletics' last six games.

Athletics' Willie MacIver: In line for more playing time
MacIver is expected to have an expanded role at catcher while Shea Langeliers (oblique) is sidelined, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
MacIver was called up to the majors May 23 after dominating at Triple-A, where he slashed .389/.469/.548 with 30 RBI. Since debuting May 25, the 28-year-old has batted .227/.261/.273 with two RBI over seven games and 22 at-bats. Rockies' Willie MacIver: Playing with rookie-ball affiliate
MacIver (shoulder) has gone 4-for-11 with two doubles, three walks, four runs, three RBI and three stolen bases over four games in the Arizona Complex League since being assigned to the Rockies' rookie-level affiliate June 5.
MacIver finished the 2022 campaign at Triple-A Albuquerque, but he opened the current season in the ACL while he works his way back from a significant right shoulder injury. The 26-year-old has performed well at the dish thus far in the ACL and should gradually move up the minor-league ladder before settling at Albuquerque or Double-A Hartford.

Rockies' Willie MacIver: Facing long-term absence
MacIver is expected to miss the first 6-to-8 weeks of Triple-A Albuquerque's season after he recently received an anti-inflammatory injection in his right shoulder, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.
MacIver was pegged to serve as Albuquerque's primary backstop to begin the season, but the injury will likely keep him on the shelf until around late May or early June. The Rockies signed Grayson Greiner to a minor-league deal Tuesday to bolster their catching depth at Triple-A.
