Padres' Joshua Mears: Elevated to Double-A
The Padres promoted Mears from High-A Fort Wayne to Double-A San Antonio on Tuesday.
He's gone 3-for-13 with a home run and a stolen base through his first three games at San Antonio. Prior to receiving the promotion, the 21-year-old outfielder slashed .223/.304/.511 with 14 long balls in 207 plate appearances in the Midwest League.

Padres' Joshua Mears: Flashing power in High-A ball
Mears is slashing .267/.365/.711 with five home runs, five doubles, 13 RBI and a stolen base in 12 games with High-A Fort Wayne.
Mears is striking out too much -- he has fanned 19 times in 45 at-bats -- but the 21-year-old is also showing off his considerable power, tying for the Midwest League lead with five long balls. He smashed 17 homers in 242 at-bats with Low-A Lake Elsinore in 2021 and could make his way up to the Double-A level before long, especially if he's able to cut down on the strikeouts.

Padres' Joshua Mears: Returns for Low-A affiliate
Mears (undisclosed) rejoined the Low-A Lake Elsinore lineup Saturday and went 0-for-3 with a stolen base and a run.
The Padres never provided an explanation for Mears' absence from the Low-A starting nine for nearly two weeks, but he was believed to have been inactive due to COVID-19-related protocols. The 20-year-old outfielder appears to be healthy now and will look to finish the season with a flourish after slashing .262/.402/.545 with 14 home runs and nine steals across 249 plate appearances at Lake Elsinore thus far.

Padres' Joshua Mears: Back on IL after brief return
Mears, who previously missed two weeks of action with a right shoulder strain before returning to the Low-A Lake Elsinore lineup Aug. 3, was placed on the injured list three days later.
An official explanation for Mears' placement on the IL wasn't provided by Lake Elsinore, but Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune speculates that the 20-year-old may have been deactivated due to COVID-19-related contact-tracing protocols. Mears is slashing .266/.404/.553 with 14 home runs and eight stolen bases across 245 plate appearances this season at Low-A.

Padres' Joshua Mears: Out with shoulder strain
Mears landed on the injured list with Low-A Lake Elsinore on Saturday due to a strained right shoulder, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Mears suffered the injury while diving for a ball in the outfield. Prior to the injury, the 2019 second-round pick hit a strong .258/.403/.542 with 13 homers and eight steals in 58 games, though his 36.0 percent strikeout rate is worryingly high.
