  • Phillies' Tanner Banks: Out with strained forearm

The Phillies placed Banks on the 15-day injured list Thursday with a left forearm strain.

It's unclear when Banks' forearm began bothering him, but he allowed five runs and four home runs over 1.1 innings in his two appearances since being recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley over the weekend. Chase Shugart is up from the minors to take Banks' spot on the roster and in the bullpen.

  • Phillies' Tanner Banks: Officially recalled Saturday

The Phillies recalled Banks from Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Saturday.

The move corresponds with right-hander Alan Rangel being optioned to Lehigh Valley following Thursday's game against the Pirates. Banks has spent the majority of the 2026 season in the majors but has been in Triple-A since mid-June. Across 26 major-league games this season, Banks has a 5.86 ERA, 1.92 WHIP, two holds and a 31:13 K:BB across 27.2 innings.

  • Phillies' Tanner Banks: Will be recalled Saturday

The Phillies will recall Banks from Triple-A Lehigh Valley prior to Saturday's game in Kansas City, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports.

The Phillies have a rare Friday off day because of the World Cup going on in Kansas City, so the Banks transaction will become official Saturday. Banks has posted a 5.86 ERA, 1.92 WHIP and 31:13 K:BB across 27.2 frames with the big club this season.

  • Phillies' Tanner Banks: Optioned to Triple-A

The Phillies optioned Banks to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Thursday.

Though he's struck out 31 in 27.2 innings this season, Banks has also issued 13 walks while holding a 5.86 ERA and 1.92 WHIP. He'll try to get straightened out at Lehigh Valley.

  • Phillies' Tanner Banks: Serving as opener

Banks will serve as the Phillies' opening pitcher in Friday's game versus the Brewers, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.

Banks holds a 6.08 ERA on the season, but a 2.75 FIP and 27 strikeouts over 23.2 innings point to some bad luck. He'll handle the first inning or two for the Phillies before turning things over to bulk reliever Andrew Painter.

  • Phillies' Tanner Banks: Continues to struggle in 2026

Banks allowed two runs on four hits and one walk in 1.1 innings Thursday against the Athletics. He struck out two.

Banks hasn't been a particularly reliable arm out of Philadelphia's bullpen in the early going. Only nine of his 15 appearances have been scoreless outings in terms of earned runs allowed, and the 34-year-old has a 6.75 ERA, 2.39 WHIP and 18:9 K:BB with two holds across 14.2 innings.

  • Phillies' Tanner Banks: Manages first hold Tuesday

Banks picked up a hold Tuesday versus the Nationals, allowing one run on three hits and no walks in 1.2 innings.

The Phillies were working with a three-run lead when Banks entered, so Banks was able to hang on for his first hold of the season. The southpaw had a relatively long leash against a lefty-heavy Washington lineup, tossing 37 pitches Tuesday, which suggests Philadelphia is comfortable assigning Banks to record more than three outs if the situation calls for it.

  • Phillies' Tanner Banks: Gets one-year pact from Phillies

The Phillies and Banks avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $1.2 million contract Thursday, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports.

Banks' first full season in Philadelphia was a dandy, as he finished with a 3.07 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 61:12 K:BB over 67.1 regular-season innings. He will help set up from the left side again for the Phillies in 2026.

  • Phillies' Tanner Banks: Registers eighth hold

Banks threw a clean sixth inning for a hold Saturday against the Royals.

The southpaw matched a career high with his eighth hold of the year Saturday. With Jose Alvarado's (forearm) season perhaps already over, the Phillies will likely lean on Banks and Matt Strahm as their top left-handed relievers to finish up the campaign. Through 64.1 innings, Banks has a strong 3.22 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 57:10 K:BB.

  • Phillies' Tanner Banks: Strong run continues in win

Banks (5-2) was credited with the win in Sunday's 11-9 victory over the Nationals, allowing one hit and no walks in 1.2 scoreless innings. He struck out two.

Sunday marked Banks' 11th scoreless outing in his last 12 appearances. The left-hander has been outstanding for the Phillies since the start of June -- he has a 2.25 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 21:3 K:BB over his last 28 innings -- though it's possible Banks will lose out on some high-leverage opportunities once Jose Alvarado (suspension) gets back into the bullpen mix.

  • Phillies' Tanner Banks: Records third hold Saturday

Banks threw a clean eighth inning in Saturday's 9-5 win over the Angels. He struck out one.

Banks logged his third hold of the season, and it was a nice recovery after he yielded three runs over his prior two outings. With fellow southpaw Matt Strahm having moved into the closing mix for the Phillies, Banks should see a larger share of high-leverage work until Jose Alvarado (suspension) returns. Banks has a reliable 3.56 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 43:6 K:BB over 43 innings this year.

  • Phillies' Tanner Banks: Mostly working low-leverage spots

Banks surrendered two runs on four hits and no walks in one inning of relief in Sunday's 11-4 victory over Toronto. He didn't record a strikeout.

The four hits allowed represented a season high for Banks, who aggressively poured in 13 of his 16 pitches for strikes as the Phillies nursed a big lead in the seventh inning. Banks has already conceded three runs in five innings during June, but he's been a dependable middle reliever in Philadelphia's bullpen for the most part. On the year, the 33-year-old left-hander owns a 4.06 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 32:5 K:BB with one hold plus a save across 31 innings.

  • Phillies' Tanner Banks: Snags rare save

Banks struck out the only batter he faced to earn the save in Friday's 4-3 win over the Athletics.

The Phillies grew their lead from 1-0 to 4-0 in the ninth inning, taking a save situation off the board for Jordan Romano, who entered the game anyway in the bottom of the ninth. He struggled, allowing a three-run home run to Nick Kurtz, and Banks entered after that, striking out Luis Urias to avoid an epic collapse. This was Banks' fourth career save and his first this season. He's mostly pitched in a middle-relief role, compiling a 3.91 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and 26:5 K:BB over 23 innings. While he was successful Friday, Banks is unlikely to challenge Romano for the closer role, while Matt Strahm and Orion Kerkering have been the Phillies' primary setup options.

  • Phillies' Tanner Banks: Continues to work in middle relief

Banks threw a scoreless sixth inning in Wednesday's 9-5 win over the Rockies. He struck out one.

That's now seven scoreless outings out of nine appearances in May for Banks, but he's still given up five runs this month. On the season, the 33-year-old owns a 3.97 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 25:5 K:BB. With Jose Alvarado out of action due to an 80-game suspension, Banks could see more action as a setup man as opposed to a middle reliever, but he remains well out of contention for regular save chances.

  • Phillies' Tanner Banks: Will open Tuesday's game

Banks will serve as the Phillies' opening pitcher for Tuesday's game against the Cubs, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports.

Banks will be asked to work an inning or so before turning the ball over to a bulk reliever. Gelb notes that Kolby Allard or Taijuan Walker will likely be used in long relief Tuesday.

  • Phillies' Tanner Banks: Dealt to Philly

The White Sox traded Banks to the Phillies on Tuesday, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports.

Through 48 innings with the White Sox, Banks has posted a 4.13 ERA and 1.29 WHIP. Chicago's lack of reliever depth has forced him to work often in high-leverage situations this season, though it's likely he moves into a middle-relief role upon joining a more talented Phillies bullpen.

  • White Sox's Tanner Banks: Converts save chance Thursday

Banks earned a save against Seattle on Thursday, striking out two batters in a perfect 10th inning.

Michael Kopech got the opportunity to notch a save in the ninth, but he blew the chance by serving up a game-tying solo shot to Julio Rodriguez. Chicago was able to push across a run in the top of the 10th, and Banks was handed the ball with a chance to earn a save in the bottom of that frame. The left-hander looked good doing so, fanning the first two batters he faced before ending the game by inducing a flyout. It was Banks' second save this season, and he has a 4.73 ERA though 32.1 innings. He isn't likely to see consistent save chances despite Kopech's struggles in the closer role.

  • White Sox's Tanner Banks: Squanders save chance

Banks blew the save Sunday against the Red Sox, allowing one run on one hit with one strikeout during the ninth inning.

Despite the White Sox's fluid closer role, Banks hadn't seen much ninth-inning work this season but took the mound Sunday with a one-run lead. He couldn't convert what would've been his second save of 2024, as he allowed a leadoff double to David Hamilton, who stole third and was brought home on a sacrifice fly by Reese McGuire to send the game to extras. While it's worth noting that Banks received a save chance, it's tough to project who'll receive ninth-inning work consistently for Chicago.
