Yusmeiro Petit: Let go by Padres
Petit was released by the Padres on Thursday, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Petit signed a minor-league contract with the Padres in early May, but he posted a 7.71 ERA and 1.96 WHIP in 11.2 innings over 11 relief appearances at Triple-A El Paso. The right-hander saw plenty of work in the majors in recent seasons but will return to free agency after failing to generate much production in the minors over the last month.

Padres' Yusmeiro Petit: Joins Padres on minors deal
Petit signed a minor-league contract with the Padres on Monday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports.
Petit is now 37 years old, but he's managed to post an ERA below 4.00 in each of the last five seasons and for nine of the last 10. His 3.92 ERA over 78 innings for the Athletics last season may not be repeatable, however, as it came with a very low 11.8 percent strikeout rate and a 4.72 FIP. He'll audition for a role in the minors and is unlikely to see high-leverage work if he eventually earns a promotion.

Athletics' Yusmeiro Petit: In fine form after stumble
Petit, who fired 1.1 perfect innings during which he recorded a strikeout in a win over the Astros on Sunday, now has a five-appearance scoreless streak in which he's allowed just a single hit.
The strong stretch comes directly in the wake of one of Petit's poorest outings of the season, a Sept. 14 appearance versus the Royals during which he allowed four earned runs on four hits while retiring just one batter and taking his second loss. The rubber-armed veteran has once again logged a hefty workload this season, logging 76 outings entering Monday's action and already establishing a new career high in wins (eight), while also tallying 21 holds and his first pair of saves since his sole Angels campaign in 2017.

Athletics' Yusmeiro Petit: Struggles Tuesday, takes loss
Petit (8-2) was tagged with the loss in relief Tuesday against Kansas City after allowing four runs on four hits across one-third of an inning, striking out one.
Petit entered the game in the sixth inning but was unable to tame the Royals lineup, and he departed the contest after allowing three straight singles and a three-run home run to Salvador Perez. The veteran reliever has enjoyed a decent season, but he seems to be moving in the wrong direction of late and has given up runs in four of his last five appearances. He owns a 3.79 ERA on the year, but he has a 15.43 figure over his first five September appearances.

Athletics' Yusmeiro Petit: Working on scoreless streak
Petit, who secured his 19th hold with a scoreless inning during which he recorded a walk and a strikeout Sunday against the Yankees, has forged six consecutive scoreless appearances.
The veteran reliever is in the midst of another one of his dominant stretches, which has lowered his ERA and WHIP back down to 3.02 and 1.01, respectively. Petit also has three holds during the sample, keeping him within striking distance of eclipsing the career-high 29 he logged for Oakland back in 2019.

Athletics' Yusmeiro Petit: Notches 17th hold
Petit secured his 17th hold in a win over the White Sox on Thursday, firing a perfect seventh inning.
The veteran reliever had given up at least one earned run in three of his last five appearances, so Thursday's spotless effort was a welcome sight. Petit is still prone to the occasional stumble, but he's been a fantasy asset by posting eight wins and a pair of saves alongside the 17 holds through 60 appearances.

Petit (8-1) was credited with the win in an extra-innings victory over the Rangers on Friday, firing a perfect 11th inning during which he recorded a strikeout.

Athletics' Yusmeiro Petit: Solid thus far in second half
Petit has a 1.93 ERA across the 4.2 innings covering his four second-half appearances.
The high-volume reliever hasn't yet added to his impressive tally of 16 holds since the All-Star break and has blown one save opportunity in that span as well, but Petit continues to consistently limit damage. Petit also has already tied a career high with seven victories, and his solid stretch since the Midsummer Classic has served to coax his ERA back under 3.00 (2.98).

Athletics' Yusmeiro Petit: Hits All-Star break hot
Petit, who secured his 16th hold in a win over the Rangers on Sunday with a perfect eighth inning, garnered a hold in each of his last three appearances of the first half of the season.
The ageless right-hander wrapped up the first half of the season having logged an appearance in 45 of the Athletics' first 92 games, putting him on pace to surpass the career-high 74 he made during his first campaign in Oakland back in 2018. Petit has been especially effective since late June, allowing just one earned run and notching three holds across his last seven outings.

Athletics' Yusmeiro Petit: Extends scoreless streak
Petit, who fired a perfect eighth inning in a loss to the Red Sox on Sunday, now has four consecutive scoreless one-inning appearances.
The rubber-armed reliever has actually been in a nice groove since late May, leaving a brief, rare rocky stretch behind him by producing one save, seven holds, a 2.65 ERA and an 0.88 WHIP over the 17 innings covering his last 13 appearances. Petit's workload is as brisk as ever in his age-36 season, as with 41 appearances through the first three months-plus, he's on pace to exceed the career-high 80 he logged in 2019.

Athletics' Yusmeiro Petit: Takes first loss
Petit (7-1) took the loss in Wednesday's 5-3 defeat to the Rangers, allowing two runs on three hits in one inning.
Petit entered in the seventh to protect a 3-2 lead and immediately surrendered a home run, double and single to blow it. He'd been a key reliever up until Wednesday with seven wins, 12 holds and two saves. One poor outing likely won't change that.

Athletics' Yusmeiro Petit: Secures second save
Petit earned the save against the Angels on Tuesday, allowing one run on one hit while striking out one over one inning.
With Lou Trivino held out after having notched a save each of the previous two days, Petit was summoned to protect a three-run ninth-inning lead. He surrendered a home run to Jared Walsh but avoided further trouble to collect his second save of the season. Trivino has established himself as Oakland's clear top closer, but Petit has done well enough this season -- he owns a 3.16 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and sterling 7-0 record -- to merit the occasional save chance when Trivino is unavailable.

Athletics' Yusmeiro Petit: Tallies another hold
Petit pitched a flawless seventh inning en route to his ninth hold of the season in Wednesday's 4-0 win over the Diamondbacks.
The veteran excels at pitching to contact, as was evident in his five-pitch inning Wednesday. After a rough stretch in late May, Petit has held opponents scoreless in five of his last six appearances, re-establishing himself as one of his team's most reliable late-inning relievers.

Athletics' Yusmeiro Petit: Notches seventh hold
Petit secured his seventh hold in a win over the Rockies on Friday, allowing just one hit and no walks over 1.2 scoreless innings.
The veteran reliever expertly navigated the hazards of Coors Field during his 21-pitch outing, getting 16 of his offerings into the strike zone while only allowing a single. Following an atypically erratic stretch during which he allowed multiple earned runs in three of five appearances, Petit has settled down to post three consecutive scoreless efforts covering a total of four innings.

Athletics' Yusmeiro Petit: Gets seventh win Friday
Petit (7-0) was credited with the victory in a win over the Angels on Friday, firing 1.1 scoreless innings during which he recorded a strikeout.
Petit was optimally efficient, needing only 13 pitches to record his four outs and getting 10 of those offerings into the strike zone. The perfect outing was an excellent bounce-back effort for the veteran reliever, who allowed multiple earned runs Wednesday for the third time in five appearances. Despite proving more hittable than a season ago, Petit is still rewarding fantasy managers with his seven victories, six holds, 3.21 ERA and 1.07 WHIP across 26 appearances.

Athletics' Yusmeiro Petit: Picks up sixth relief win
Petit (6-0) allowed two earned runs on three hits while striking out one across one inning of relief Friday, recording the win over the Angels.
Petit relieved James Kaprielian with two outs in the sixth inning. He surrendered a single, double and triple all before striking out the final batter. The 36-year-old has been a reliable reliever this season, posting a 2.45 ERA and 1.01 WHIP in 25.2 innings. However, he's allowed five runs over his last three innings. In comparison, he gave up just two runs over his first 22.2 innings this season.

Athletics' Yusmeiro Petit: Grabs fifth win
Petit (5-0) was credited with the victory in a win over the Astros on Tuesday, firing a perfect ninth inning during which he recorded two strikeouts.
Following an uncharacteristically shaky outing that nevertheless netted him his sixth hold of the season in his most recent appearance against the Twins on Saturday, Petit bounced right back with Tuesday's stellar effort. The veteran reliever is already within just two wins of tying his career-high mark of seven established back in 2018, with Tuesday's victory coming as a result of Ramon Laureano's game-winning sacrifice fly in the home half of the ninth.

Athletics' Yusmeiro Petit: Poor effort for sixth hold
Petit recorded his sixth hold in a loss to the Twins on Saturday despite being charged with three earned runs on two hits and two walks across one inning.
The veteran reliever put together an uncharacteristically poor effort, but because what turned out to be the winning run went on Jake Diekman's ledger, Petit was still credited with the hold in the team's loss. The 36-year-old's location was unusually poor, as he issued multiple walks for the first time all season and got just 10 of his 19 pitches into the strike zone. Nevertheless, Petit continues to be an above-average asset in formats that count holds due to his typically reliable performances and ability to log a heavy volume of appearances.
