  • Travis Frederick: Hangs up cleats

Frederick announced via his personal Twitter account Monday that he will retire from the NFL. Frederick was the epitome of consistent for the Cowboys at center in his seven-year career, aside from the 2018 campaign. Despite being diagnosed with Guillain-Barre Syndrome that season, Frederick battled back to start all 16 games this past campaign. The 29-year-old will now likely hand the reigns off to Joe Looney, who appears in line to take over at center in 2020.

  • Cowboys' Travis Frederick: Back at practice

Frederick participated in a padded practice Tuesday for the first time since being diagnosed with Guillain-Barre Syndrome last August, David Helman of DallasCowboys.com reports. He's still being held out of one-on-one drills, largely due to offseason shoulder surgery, but this is a huge step forward in the center's recovery from the autoimmune disorder. Frederick remains on track to start in Week 1 and help the Dallas offensive line return to the dominant form it lost while he was sidelined last season.

  • Cowboys' Travis Frederick: Active to start camp

Frederick (illness/shoulder) is expected to be active for the start of training camp and ready to go for the year, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. Frederick sat out the entire 2018 season after being diagnosed with Guillain-Barre syndrome. Prior to the setback, he landed four straight Pro Bowl bids and was considered one of the best centers in the game. It's unclear where his overall game is after dealing with a serious health scare, but the 28-year-old's availability for 2019 is certainly a feel-good start to camp for him and the Cowboys' organization.

  • Cowboys' Travis Frederick: Taking part in individual drills

Frederick (illness/shoulder) has been able to work through individual drills during this week's OTAs, Nick Eatman of DallasCowboys.com reports. After missing all of 2018 while battling Guillain-Barre syndrome and undergoing minor shoulder surgery this offseason, it was expected that Frederick would be held out of team drills and full practices until at least training camp. It's still an encouraging sign that he's able to handle individual drills already, however. The Cowboys' offensive line took a step backwards in effectiveness last year without its starting center, so if Frederick is able to return to anything close to his prior form, it will provide a boost for the entire offense.

  • Cowboys' Travis Frederick: Expects full clearance for camp

Frederick (illness/shoulder) won't participate in team drills during OTAs or minicamp, but he doesn't expect to face any limitations during training camp, Todd Archer of ESPN.com reports. Frederick said he feels "close to if not [back to] full strength" after missing the 2018 season with Guillain-Barre Syndrome, making his limitations in spring workouts mostly a result of the minor shoulder surgery he underwent this offseason. While it's possible Dallas could continue restricting the practice workload of the four-time Pro-Bowl center when training camp arrives, that approach would appear purely precautionary to ensure the team's offensive line is in sound condition for Week 1.

  • Cowboys' Travis Frederick: Will be placed on active roster

The Cowboys plan to keep Frederick (illness) on the 53-man roster, David Helman of the team's official site reports. Dallas finds itself in a bit of a sticky situation. On the one hand, Frederick is an elite-caliber center and grades out as one of the best lineman in the NFL, so it makes sense that the team will want to get him back in the lineup as soon as possible. On the flip side, Frederick's diagnosis of Guillain-Barre Syndrome presents a high degree of uncertainty regarding his future, and keeping him on the 53-man roster rather than placing him on IR could cut into Dallas' depth elsewhere. Given his value, the Cowboys are not yet ready to make any decisions that will rule him out for a significant portion of 2018, but it's possible they'll eventually have a tough call to make in that regard.

Frederick announced on his personal Twitter account Wednesday he has been diagnosed with the auto-immune disease Guillain-Barre Syndrome. Frederick expressed optimism for his return to football, as the disease was apparently detected at a relatively early stage. However, he remains without any sort of return timetable. The 27-year-old seems unlikely to be available for the season opener Sept. 9 against the Panthers, which would bring an end to his 80-game starting streak. Frederick should be considered out indefinitely until indicated otherwise. Joe Looney looks inline to open the campaign as Dallas' starting center.

The early prognosis was good news for the Frederick and the Cowboys, but both parties are eager to confirm the positive findings with other medical professionals. The forthcoming evaluations suggests that a reliable return timetable for Frederick won't be available for some time. The team is naturally hopeful the bruising lineman will be available for the regular-season opener, yet that remains firmly up in the air for the time being.
